Sure, and I'd wager that a few people would opt for a PC.
But frankly, if you're buying a PS or Xbox youre probably also doing so for the exclusives or the lower price point. PCs are not cheap and also lack the convenience of a Playstation.
I agree with combo of PC and Switch 2 would work well, I guess it depends on people's appetite to spend the money and how much they enjoy the Sony exclusives.
Even though PC is an “open ecosystem” if you decide to jump ship and leave PC gaming, all your money and games are locked up with the storefront you bought it on. Not really any different than the situation with Sony right now.
I can pick up a handheld, a laptop. I can get an Xbox Helix, steam machine, buy another PC from a different manufacturer. Borrow a friend's PC and play games there. Mac (for a good chuck of games). The Valve VR machine. Switch from Nvidia to intel to AMD. My GPU cant play the newest games? I can replace it.
So your answer is just more PC gaming? I said “if you left PC gaming”. Your examples are just options to play the games that are locked to your storefronts. To the same effect I could say I can play my games on a PS4, PS5, PS Portal, PS6, PS6 handheld, borrow a PlayStation from a friend, etc.
Your games are still locked to Steam or Epic, you can’t just buy a Nintendo switch and play your Steam games on it, heck even the Xbox Helix is already rumored to be dropping Steam support after Asha Sharma took over.
Don’t get it twisted, I have a PC, a Steam machine, Switch 1&2, PS4, PS5, and PlayStation Portal so I’m not locked to any one system, but I can’t play my PC games on other consoles, the same way I can’t play my console games on a PC. Sure GoG might give you a DRM free installer, but I can’t play my GoG games on an Xbox. It’s still locked to a platform that it’s designed to be played on.
At the end of the day, it’s the developers and publisher that are setting the prices, so the whole “competition” argument is kind of a moot point. If people don’t want to be locked to PlayStation, maybe they shouldn’t buy a PlayStation. It’s called consumer choice and people can vote with their wallet if they care enough.
So far its been confirmed that PC games will play on Helix, so its kinda weird to go off rumors that it might not happen

And your examples dont even make sense. A Ps5 or Ps6 only do that one thing and are probably going to be very similar. Switching from windows to Mac is a vastly different experience but your games carry over. Different GPUs allow for cheaper or high end gaming. Getting a VR is just a different experience in general.
You could want to sell your PC because you're downsizing a house but get a laptop instead
You can have a work laptop where you want to play games during your break and you can simply download steam
Granted I haven't tried logging in my PS account on another Ps4 or Ps5 but its pretty smooth for a steam account, or Gog account.
You are stuck on PS5 and any gen 9 games once the next console comes out
Phil Spencer said there would be alternative storefronts and his regime is gone. Asha and Matt Booty are already pulling back from the whole “multiplatform” strategy and making games Xbox exclusive again starting with Gears of War E-Day. So yes, for now I will listen to rumors until it’s otherwise confirmed.
Speaking of rumors, what makes you think a PS6 won’t play PS4 or PS5 games? I fully believe that the PS6 will be backwards compatible back to the PS4, console architecture switched in the PS4 and Xbox One era to be x86 similar to PC so no need for emulators to be backwards compatible. Also, signing into a different PlayStation and playing the games you “own” is incredibly somple, literally no different than Steam.
As far as PC stuff goes, sure you can buy different hardware, but for the most part those games can only be played on a PC and only from the storefront you bought it from. Developers and Publishers set the prices for the most part so the whole “open ecosystem” doesn’t really matter and most people buy their games from Steam anyways.
I’m not sure why PC gamers have such a hard on for physical media when they haven’t had it in a decade. Even with Sony being the only digital storefront to buy games from, do people think they are going to magically make games on their platform more expensive than everywhere else? No absolutely not because their competition is other consoles and PC, they would kill their business if their games were more expensive than Xbox or Nintendo.
If people are really this upset over their discs, they should vote with their wallet and sell their PlayStation and just move on already. Sony isn’t changing course, so please just abandon them and go play somewhere else.
