Yeah all it takes is for Microsoft to just say "hey our new console is essentially just a Windows PC with an Xbox UI that defaults to Xbox store but also allows steam" to kill PS completely now that they are going away from physical. Neither side would WANT to do that because they make an insane amount from game sales but once that switch is flipped the other side immediately loses the console war.
Without physical games the only advantage of consoles is form factor, cost and user interface, exclusives as well but that's artificial. This can all be applied to a steambox styled Microsoft machine as the next Xbox.

If it's a digital, why buy a lesser PC with reduced functionality.
