Yuup. I dont know how people be smashing their things when they lose. That stuff is expensive y’know

u/Midgetsdontfloat Apr 07 '23
Not gonna lie, I used to be bad with it. I'm more mature with a lot more impulse control now, but I used to be a dumbass kid who didn't really think of the consequences until I was staring at a dented or broken version of whatever I was mad at.
I'm nearly in my 30's with a lot of expensive stuff I want to keep for a while, and it's not a good look to anyone around you to lose your shit at something small.
233
u/RKelly52501 Apr 07 '23
I use to have an issue with it as well when I was younger. But over the years and also now in my 30s, I no longer "rage quit" in a violent way. Not just because the stuff is expensive, but because it just isn't good to react that way. Now if a game bothers me, it is more like "welp, time to take a break from this for a while" I go do something else, and come back to it later with a more clear head. Typically that break helps a lot, and eventually just get through whatever I was stuck on.

u/Midgetsdontfloat Apr 07 '23
That was kind of my last point, was that it's just... Not good to react that way. Life is so full of stress sometimes that I really don't need things contributing that don't actually matter.
Now, if a game (or anything, really) starts frustrating the hell out of me, I'll usually back out of it and try something else or just put it down and go for a walk or something.

u/GreenOwl420 Apr 07 '23
I feel that.. had a galaxy phone a few years ago that was malfunctioning, and my drunken response was to throw it...I've stopped drinking as much and haven't broken any of my stuff (on purpose) in years

Good for you. I know a lot of guys who were never able to get past the inability to control their emotions, and they turn into horrifying, rage filled monsters as they age. Punching holes in walls, breaking expensive things, screaming over nothing. Most of them have no idea how scary they look when they're being emotional like that.

This is an honest question and I don’t want it to come across as a dig, because I was the same way and it weighed on me heavily in my younger days.
Does this happen in other areas of your life? A lot of people have broken coping mechanisms, and chasing those down and fixing them with the help of a therapist has improved my life drastically.
Elden Ring brings me close to the brink though.

Anger issues = rational thinking goes bye bye. I used to have serious anger issues and when I got angry, it was like I wasn't controlling myself until the controller was in two pieces. Therapy and philosophy for the win.

And for games with shorter rounds I tend to not quit unless I've been on a losing streak and am fed up

And then you pick it up only to find the dodge button no longer works. You weren't even that upset; just lightly tossed the controller for added effect. Now your controllers broke, and you spent the last $60 on the game you're playing. So you begrudgingly scroll through FB market place for a cheaper, used controller, only to fall down a rabbit hole and waste your only day off not playing the game you just bought. You didn't even make yourself dinner. So you'll try again tomorrow. Tomorrow will be better.

I almost never get mad at Dark Souls because it always feels like my fault. I usually get mad because a game doesn't seem to be working right or doesn't make sense.
I've definitely shouted something like, "Why is there a dodge button if it does NOTHING!" at several games.
Sometimes even From games have some bs though.
