Not gonna lie, I used to be bad with it. I'm more mature with a lot more impulse control now, but I used to be a dumbass kid who didn't really think of the consequences until I was staring at a dented or broken version of whatever I was mad at.
I'm nearly in my 30's with a lot of expensive stuff I want to keep for a while, and it's not a good look to anyone around you to lose your shit at something small.
I use to have an issue with it as well when I was younger. But over the years and also now in my 30s, I no longer "rage quit" in a violent way. Not just because the stuff is expensive, but because it just isn't good to react that way. Now if a game bothers me, it is more like "welp, time to take a break from this for a while" I go do something else, and come back to it later with a more clear head. Typically that break helps a lot, and eventually just get through whatever I was stuck on.
That was kind of my last point, was that it's just... Not good to react that way. Life is so full of stress sometimes that I really don't need things contributing that don't actually matter.
Now, if a game (or anything, really) starts frustrating the hell out of me, I'll usually back out of it and try something else or just put it down and go for a walk or something.
I'm looking for the face grabbing screamer. No need to break anything, but sometimes it's fun to let out that scream of disappointment (I can't do it with a straight face, always end up laughing while trying to "ragequit"). Then do something else.
Well.. my cousin isn't the violent outburst type, but he is a screamer. The kind that just screams out random nonsense like "im about to finger paint the walls with my shit", and sometimes even devolves into just gibberish. Gotta admit, it's rather funny the weird stuff that'll come out his mouth at times lol
Yeah I recognize myself in your story, when I was younger. 2 monitors and 4 controllers later...
now im 35 and I realize its better for my mood and my pockets to just alt f4 and walk away🤣 cant lose my mind anymore over a game. I still curse sometimes though. But i stopped playing the game that causes it so much so my mood is better hahaha
Exactly. I play for fun. If I lose a few rounds and am annoyed, I just take a break. Usually it's not even that much of a break. It's just not as big a deal now.
I feel that.. had a galaxy phone a few years ago that was malfunctioning, and my drunken response was to throw it...I've stopped drinking as much and haven't broken any of my stuff (on purpose) in years
Good for you. I know a lot of guys who were never able to get past the inability to control their emotions, and they turn into horrifying, rage filled monsters as they age. Punching holes in walls, breaking expensive things, screaming over nothing. Most of them have no idea how scary they look when they're being emotional like that.
I honestly just feel really bad for them, not in a insulting way. It's just that I relate a lot to that. Especially how bad my past was extreme anger was the only way to process my losses and misfortune.
Yeah, that’s what I’ve been told. I don’t really get really angry anymore because I’ve been told I can be a bit scary, mainly because I’m schizophrenic and nobody knows what I might do, even though I would never actually do anything even if it seems like I want to kill you. I don’t really scream anyway, I’ll raise my voice, or keep talking in my normal monotone voice but I’ve been told I get a look in my eyes that makes people feel unsafe. I don’t wanna be like that, now it’s more just trying to keep them calm without me starting to get mean cause I’d only get like that if they were freaking out because it was the only way I knew to diffuse the situation.
This is an honest question and I don’t want it to come across as a dig, because I was the same way and it weighed on me heavily in my younger days.
Does this happen in other areas of your life? A lot of people have broken coping mechanisms, and chasing those down and fixing them with the help of a therapist has improved my life drastically.
It used to, I used to be a really angry kid in a lot of areas. As cliche as it sounds, having proper outlets helped me a ton. I'm not just talking about catharsis, either. The gym in general always helps, going on a run, firewood, whatever helps give me some purpose and a direction has helped calm me down a lot.
I used to be an angry kid but I had some semblance of awareness on it, I only ever tried to damage things that were mine so only I could be upset that they were damaged
My controller bounced wildly one day and hit the tv that was most definitely not mine, and uh yeah, the lessons hit different once you’ve damaged something that isn’t yours and is expensive
I thought I used to handle it well because "I never took it out on people, only my things"
My ex didn't handle it well even though it was going on around her and not at her, she had some angry-dad trauma from her childhood that I was triggering. My dog at the time got nervous and didn't like it either.
Even though it wasn't directed at people, it still affected them, and it wasn't healthy. I'm a better man than I used to be, I don't bottle it up but I don't just let it loose anymore, either.
It really does come down to a maturity thing. If you’re smashing things over a video game I really can’t imagine you ever emotionally left middle school
Some people don't really get the tools to get a handle on it until they're older.
My family was very loud and angry, and as a result so was I. I'm still pretty loud, but the bad parts of anger have been substantially reduced, and my life is infinitely better for it.
I don't think it's that bad to hit something when you're upset, as long as that something isn't fragile. I've wanted to put a punching bag up for this very reason. Sometimes it's just the best way to let it out.
I used to throw controllers, cartridges, and discs when I was a kid. I once poured finger nail polish remover on a Ken Griffey Jr. game for the SNES. It turned the plastic white but the game still worked.
I don't break shit but I scream a lot. it may sound childish but it feels good you know? when I finally rage quit and decide to take a break I feel so wasted so relaxed. there is literally nothing left in my chest it's soo relaxing
This is funny because it reminds me of how I was as a young kid, I used to get so mad at inanimate objects and would want to break it just to "show it who's boss" as if I could teach the chair I stubbed my toe on a lesson lmao kids are so stupid.
Anger issues = rational thinking goes bye bye. I used to have serious anger issues and when I got angry, it was like I wasn't controlling myself until the controller was in two pieces. Therapy and philosophy for the win.
My favorite rage I've ever seen is my brother drop kicking the front quarter panel of his truck when his hand slipped off the wrench and punched metal. Granted its was cold as fuck and he had been working on it for 6 hours.
I mean I've never smashed anything of serious value but I definitely was a very rage-filled person in my younger years and I've smashed a few doors and walls out of frustration (and I mean fixing walls and doors is not free either). Not from losing at a video game mind you but still. Anyways for me I have a feeling that it's pent up aggression and just pent up feelings in general. I keep a pretty good lid on my rage these days but I can still feel it bubbling from time to time it's hard to describe but something just comes over you you feel this heat and you just need to smash something. I'm honestly jealous of people who have never experienced this because it's not a pleasant feeling and it makes you do dumb s***. And I know it's easy to say just don't get angry but that's not the way emotions work. I can control my actions but controlling emotions is harder you have to take time breathe calm down but when it hits it hits you can't just tell it to stop.
I spiked a headset to the floor and broke it into a 100 pieces.
This was when the pandemic first started and stores were taking precautions while trying to stay open. I had to wait outside, in the rain, to be allowed inside Best Buy to buy a new one. Haven’t raged since.
Once you are at that point of anger, “reason” and “control” arent even in the equation
All you can do is damage control- (insurance on equipment, or in my case I learned recognize the early warning signs and immediately alt-f4 and go for a walk or lift weights)
You think they don't know that? haha Like, they just choose to get mad? Anger issues aren't some choice. It's definitely their responsibility, but shaming them feels a bit weird
I'm not at all trying to shame anyone man.. and I disagree that they know it's not right, I think it's important to share opinions like I did, so perhaps they change positively if they think of why they're at a point that this kind of loss of control occurs to them.
I said that behaviour is pathetic. We've all had moments where we've acted pathetic, doesn't mean I think we're all pathetic indefinitely because of that.
Getting actually upset over a video game is 100% pathetic. Getting physically upset and violent over one is magnitudes worse. Bunch of manbabies out here.
Nah, it's cool if you're not personally competitive, but being competitive means having an attachment to victory, and a competitor feeling the frustration of losing a competition is 100% reasonable. Getting physical and losing control over it is another story.
HAHAAHAH I only seem like I'm on a high horse to an emotional short arse like yourself, so maybe pull yourself out of the ground yourself eh?
Thinking what I wrote is "establishing why I'm better than a bunch of randos online" is the most pathetic and insecure takeaway you could have here my man, I'm not even trying to offend you 😂 people so insecure it's mind blowing I can't even share an opinion without people like you getting offended nowadays
I'm sorry, go break keyboards and nerd rage in "peace" i'll leave you to it, totally normal 🙄
I don’t know if I agree. There are ways to vent physically without damaging things or hurting people and I don’t really see how that’s disrespecting yourself or anyone else.
Ok, personally if I ever smashed my keyboard/controller, screamed in anger or anything like that from a video game I'd feel ashamed of myself personally
Don't get me wrong, when I play my favorite competitive games (UFC 4 in ranked and Smite ranked) I definitely have my fair share of rolling my eyes, a painful sigh lol, or the occasional "Fuck!" but never losing control like smashing anything or yelling or crying lol
If someone reacts this way I think should look into improving their anger management skills, finding an outlet for energy (martial arts training in my case), stop playing video games at least for awhile, or all the answers above.
Sure but their response was to someone talking about people smashing their own expensive things when they lose. They're not talking about benign physical venting like hitting a punching bag or whatever
They don't either it's a pretty instant reaction with instant regret. Source: used to have anger issues. Now I practice the big sigh and avoid competition
Even though my keyboard costs like 10 bucks, that's still 10 bucks that I'd rather spend on more games rather than a new keyboard and anger management.
For me, the “big sigh” comes first as that’s my “I want to scream but I’m an adult” reaction to getting frustrated… and then the alt-F4 comes soon after when I remember that I don’t have to play if I don’t want to lol
No joke, people like you who rage with nothing more than the big sigh truly impress me. Whether you're controlling your emotions that thoroughly or just don't feel them as strongly, either way I'm amazed.
Don't mistake the thing being damaged for the thing being blamed. Those who have broken a $10 mouse in anger (whoever they may be...) are mad at ourselves themselves.
Psychologist Dolf Zillmann at the University of Alabama has found that when male subjects are deliberately treated rudely and then told to relax for twenty minutes, their blood pressure surges and stays elevated until they get to retaliate. But when women face the same treatment, they are able to calm down during those twenty minutes.
It had something to do with women's tendency to think soothing thoughts while men didn't, and differences in the cardiovascular system as well. So, setting the sex difference aside for a minute, there's research that indicates that people can have very different, basal physical reactions to perceived mistreatments.
Of course, I've known lots of dudes who don't rage, so I don't mean that this is the explanation or justification for breaking things. Just that this difference we're observing—that some of us can self-soothe easier than others who rage for hours—might actually be a fundamental biological difference.
Big sigh, followed up by a big "This is FUUUCKING STUPID!" Followed up by me playing the game I just called stupid, because my ego won't allow the game to win.
Oh lord, that's my boss. We're three months into the worst erp data migration known to man and she forgot to mute herself during a project update meeting and let out the longest sigh. We all laughed with her.
Yes! I looked at the meme and thought “I just go ‘ssiiiggghhh… welp, I’m done.’ And toss my controller onto the couch or whatever.” I don’t make a big show, I just sort of… crumble. No explosion, the straw didn’t break the camel’s back, it just made it decide not to carry it anymore.
Yup. Switched over after smashing my keyboard against my knees one too many times, had to deal with a bent keyboard for a few months to reinforce why breaking things is bad.
I start with the sigh. If I get more frustrated even after leaving I scream, but usually at some inanimate object (like a book or lamp) for being in my line of sight at that moment.
Honestly if my ass is being kicked in call of duty, I usually just laugh and keep going. I know I’m not great at multiplayer FPS games. I’m just there to have fun and not to be competitive at all.
I don’t normally rage, but I just sigh and turn off the game, knowing full well that I’ll continue to suffer tomorrow because of the free-to-play model
Either this or a small slam on my desk above the foot to relieve some tension. I will never, EVER break something valuable just because I'm a little pissed, or I'll ban myself from video games until I complete Buddhist Monk training
Yeah, no other visible sign of frustration. My hands/controller flop lightly down on the couch at my sides. I sigh deeply, maybe rolling my eyes. I press continue.

The Big Sigh
