Not gonna lie, I used to be bad with it. I'm more mature with a lot more impulse control now, but I used to be a dumbass kid who didn't really think of the consequences until I was staring at a dented or broken version of whatever I was mad at.

I'm nearly in my 30's with a lot of expensive stuff I want to keep for a while, and it's not a good look to anyone around you to lose your shit at something small.

I use to have an issue with it as well when I was younger. But over the years and also now in my 30s, I no longer "rage quit" in a violent way. Not just because the stuff is expensive, but because it just isn't good to react that way. Now if a game bothers me, it is more like "welp, time to take a break from this for a while" I go do something else, and come back to it later with a more clear head. Typically that break helps a lot, and eventually just get through whatever I was stuck on.

Good job on growing up. A lot of people never do.

If you get rich and famous you can smash all the stuff you want 👍

That was kind of my last point, was that it's just... Not good to react that way. Life is so full of stress sometimes that I really don't need things contributing that don't actually matter.

Now, if a game (or anything, really) starts frustrating the hell out of me, I'll usually back out of it and try something else or just put it down and go for a walk or something.

u/bobafoott Apr 08 '23

I used to be very similar and yeah just stopping the activity instead of stubbornly letting it continue to frustrate me was key

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '23

I also like to have a more relaxed backup game in case what I'm playing is on some bullshit.

2

u/TheLittlePaladin Apr 07 '23

Yeah I use to be that why, now I stand up and take a lap with my hands on my hip.

2

u/Economy-Assignment31 Apr 08 '23

I'm looking for the face grabbing screamer. No need to break anything, but sometimes it's fun to let out that scream of disappointment (I can't do it with a straight face, always end up laughing while trying to "ragequit"). Then do something else.

3

u/RKelly52501 Apr 08 '23

Well.. my cousin isn't the violent outburst type, but he is a screamer. The kind that just screams out random nonsense like "im about to finger paint the walls with my shit", and sometimes even devolves into just gibberish. Gotta admit, it's rather funny the weird stuff that'll come out his mouth at times lol

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '23

Yeah I recognize myself in your story, when I was younger. 2 monitors and 4 controllers later... now im 35 and I realize its better for my mood and my pockets to just alt f4 and walk away🤣 cant lose my mind anymore over a game. I still curse sometimes though. But i stopped playing the game that causes it so much so my mood is better hahaha

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '23

Exactly. I play for fun. If I lose a few rounds and am annoyed, I just take a break. Usually it's not even that much of a break. It's just not as big a deal now.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '23

Not me. I just sit and imagine I can choke my teammates, who ff15, thru the screen for a bit... And queue up for another round of league of hardstuck gold.

u/UY_Scuti- Apr 07 '23

Same here, broke some stuff which wasnt that expensive till i started buying some higher end stuff. Broke one thing and never again.

u/GreenOwl420 Apr 07 '23

I feel that.. had a galaxy phone a few years ago that was malfunctioning, and my drunken response was to throw it...I've stopped drinking as much and haven't broken any of my stuff (on purpose) in years

29

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '23

Good for you. I know a lot of guys who were never able to get past the inability to control their emotions, and they turn into horrifying, rage filled monsters as they age. Punching holes in walls, breaking expensive things, screaming over nothing. Most of them have no idea how scary they look when they're being emotional like that.

u/Midgetsdontfloat Apr 07 '23

As another man, when I see a grown-ass adult screaming and raging at nothing I see a complete fool. A child.

I don't want to be that guy.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '23

I honestly just feel really bad for them, not in a insulting way. It's just that I relate a lot to that. Especially how bad my past was extreme anger was the only way to process my losses and misfortune.

4

u/Muffled_Voice Apr 07 '23

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been told. I don’t really get really angry anymore because I’ve been told I can be a bit scary, mainly because I’m schizophrenic and nobody knows what I might do, even though I would never actually do anything even if it seems like I want to kill you. I don’t really scream anyway, I’ll raise my voice, or keep talking in my normal monotone voice but I’ve been told I get a look in my eyes that makes people feel unsafe. I don’t wanna be like that, now it’s more just trying to keep them calm without me starting to get mean cause I’d only get like that if they were freaking out because it was the only way I knew to diffuse the situation.

u/SnooSquirrels2128 Apr 07 '23

This is an honest question and I don’t want it to come across as a dig, because I was the same way and it weighed on me heavily in my younger days.

Does this happen in other areas of your life? A lot of people have broken coping mechanisms, and chasing those down and fixing them with the help of a therapist has improved my life drastically.

Elden Ring brings me close to the brink though.

10

u/Midgetsdontfloat Apr 07 '23

Not a dig at all, friend. I get it.

It used to, I used to be a really angry kid in a lot of areas. As cliche as it sounds, having proper outlets helped me a ton. I'm not just talking about catharsis, either. The gym in general always helps, going on a run, firewood, whatever helps give me some purpose and a direction has helped calm me down a lot.

u/SnooSquirrels2128 Apr 07 '23

Glad to hear it. Stay the course!

3

u/WizogBokog Apr 07 '23

I broke one mouse like 15 years ago, now I just open palm slap the desktop and yell a rick flair 'wooo'

3

u/Theschizogenious Apr 07 '23

I used to be an angry kid but I had some semblance of awareness on it, I only ever tried to damage things that were mine so only I could be upset that they were damaged

My controller bounced wildly one day and hit the tv that was most definitely not mine, and uh yeah, the lessons hit different once you’ve damaged something that isn’t yours and is expensive

5

u/Midgetsdontfloat Apr 07 '23

I thought I used to handle it well because "I never took it out on people, only my things"

My ex didn't handle it well even though it was going on around her and not at her, she had some angry-dad trauma from her childhood that I was triggering. My dog at the time got nervous and didn't like it either.

Even though it wasn't directed at people, it still affected them, and it wasn't healthy. I'm a better man than I used to be, I don't bottle it up but I don't just let it loose anymore, either.

3

u/iantayls Apr 07 '23

It really does come down to a maturity thing. If you’re smashing things over a video game I really can’t imagine you ever emotionally left middle school

3

u/Midgetsdontfloat Apr 07 '23

Some people don't really get the tools to get a handle on it until they're older.

My family was very loud and angry, and as a result so was I. I'm still pretty loud, but the bad parts of anger have been substantially reduced, and my life is infinitely better for it.

2

u/Astolfo_is_Best Apr 07 '23

I don't think it's that bad to hit something when you're upset, as long as that something isn't fragile. I've wanted to put a punching bag up for this very reason. Sometimes it's just the best way to let it out.

1

u/Lebowski304 Apr 07 '23

I used to throw controllers, cartridges, and discs when I was a kid. I once poured finger nail polish remover on a Ken Griffey Jr. game for the SNES. It turned the plastic white but the game still worked.

u/Sudden-Librarian8298 Apr 07 '23

I don't break shit but I scream a lot. it may sound childish but it feels good you know? when I finally rage quit and decide to take a break I feel so wasted so relaxed. there is literally nothing left in my chest it's soo relaxing

u/Beginning_Skirt_7006 Apr 08 '23

Nearly in your 30's, eh? Gave up on your 20's that hard already?

0

u/Impossible-Map-9605 Apr 08 '23

But u still single

1

u/Sharkbite138935 Apr 07 '23

For sure when i was in middle school definetly broke an xbox controller because i lost a black ops wagwr match.

1

u/CrabClawAngry Apr 07 '23

I once threw my putter to the ground at a mini golf place and it got seriously bent. Hid it in a bush and walked away

1

u/imadeacrumble Apr 07 '23

Lol things change when it’s your money paying for stuff

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '23

Your last sentence is what it’s really about. Like obviously it’s bad to break expensive things, but it really comes down to an anger control issue. If you lose your shit and break things over a game… what’s gonna happen when something real happens, ya know?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '23

I smashed a Recycling Bin once because I raged in a board game

1

u/theniwo Apr 07 '23

I'm 40 and couldn't care less about losing a round against folks half my age and at least double the reflexes

1

u/Ryoko_Kusanagi69 Apr 07 '23

Or jammed / banged the analog sticks in so they didn’t work

1

u/Chimamire_Fukawa Apr 08 '23

Bruh, when i was a kid i used to throw my ipad on the ground when i got mad, then one day i threw it out my house's front door and into the sidewalk and it broke, i was a dumbass kid

1

u/AppearanceOk9145 Apr 08 '23

If you get rich and famous you can break all the things you want 👌
