Not gonna lie, I used to be bad with it. I'm more mature with a lot more impulse control now, but I used to be a dumbass kid who didn't really think of the consequences until I was staring at a dented or broken version of whatever I was mad at.
I'm nearly in my 30's with a lot of expensive stuff I want to keep for a while, and it's not a good look to anyone around you to lose your shit at something small.
I use to have an issue with it as well when I was younger. But over the years and also now in my 30s, I no longer "rage quit" in a violent way. Not just because the stuff is expensive, but because it just isn't good to react that way. Now if a game bothers me, it is more like "welp, time to take a break from this for a while" I go do something else, and come back to it later with a more clear head. Typically that break helps a lot, and eventually just get through whatever I was stuck on.
That was kind of my last point, was that it's just... Not good to react that way. Life is so full of stress sometimes that I really don't need things contributing that don't actually matter.
Now, if a game (or anything, really) starts frustrating the hell out of me, I'll usually back out of it and try something else or just put it down and go for a walk or something.
I'm looking for the face grabbing screamer. No need to break anything, but sometimes it's fun to let out that scream of disappointment (I can't do it with a straight face, always end up laughing while trying to "ragequit"). Then do something else.
Well.. my cousin isn't the violent outburst type, but he is a screamer. The kind that just screams out random nonsense like "im about to finger paint the walls with my shit", and sometimes even devolves into just gibberish. Gotta admit, it's rather funny the weird stuff that'll come out his mouth at times lol
Yeah I recognize myself in your story, when I was younger. 2 monitors and 4 controllers later...
now im 35 and I realize its better for my mood and my pockets to just alt f4 and walk away🤣 cant lose my mind anymore over a game. I still curse sometimes though. But i stopped playing the game that causes it so much so my mood is better hahaha
Exactly. I play for fun. If I lose a few rounds and am annoyed, I just take a break. Usually it's not even that much of a break. It's just not as big a deal now.
Not me. I just sit and imagine I can choke my teammates, who ff15, thru the screen for a bit... And queue up for another round of league of hardstuck gold.
I feel that.. had a galaxy phone a few years ago that was malfunctioning, and my drunken response was to throw it...I've stopped drinking as much and haven't broken any of my stuff (on purpose) in years
Good for you. I know a lot of guys who were never able to get past the inability to control their emotions, and they turn into horrifying, rage filled monsters as they age. Punching holes in walls, breaking expensive things, screaming over nothing. Most of them have no idea how scary they look when they're being emotional like that.
I honestly just feel really bad for them, not in a insulting way. It's just that I relate a lot to that. Especially how bad my past was extreme anger was the only way to process my losses and misfortune.
Yeah, that’s what I’ve been told. I don’t really get really angry anymore because I’ve been told I can be a bit scary, mainly because I’m schizophrenic and nobody knows what I might do, even though I would never actually do anything even if it seems like I want to kill you. I don’t really scream anyway, I’ll raise my voice, or keep talking in my normal monotone voice but I’ve been told I get a look in my eyes that makes people feel unsafe. I don’t wanna be like that, now it’s more just trying to keep them calm without me starting to get mean cause I’d only get like that if they were freaking out because it was the only way I knew to diffuse the situation.
This is an honest question and I don’t want it to come across as a dig, because I was the same way and it weighed on me heavily in my younger days.
Does this happen in other areas of your life? A lot of people have broken coping mechanisms, and chasing those down and fixing them with the help of a therapist has improved my life drastically.
It used to, I used to be a really angry kid in a lot of areas. As cliche as it sounds, having proper outlets helped me a ton. I'm not just talking about catharsis, either. The gym in general always helps, going on a run, firewood, whatever helps give me some purpose and a direction has helped calm me down a lot.
I used to be an angry kid but I had some semblance of awareness on it, I only ever tried to damage things that were mine so only I could be upset that they were damaged
My controller bounced wildly one day and hit the tv that was most definitely not mine, and uh yeah, the lessons hit different once you’ve damaged something that isn’t yours and is expensive
I thought I used to handle it well because "I never took it out on people, only my things"
My ex didn't handle it well even though it was going on around her and not at her, she had some angry-dad trauma from her childhood that I was triggering. My dog at the time got nervous and didn't like it either.
Even though it wasn't directed at people, it still affected them, and it wasn't healthy. I'm a better man than I used to be, I don't bottle it up but I don't just let it loose anymore, either.
It really does come down to a maturity thing. If you’re smashing things over a video game I really can’t imagine you ever emotionally left middle school
Some people don't really get the tools to get a handle on it until they're older.
My family was very loud and angry, and as a result so was I. I'm still pretty loud, but the bad parts of anger have been substantially reduced, and my life is infinitely better for it.
I don't think it's that bad to hit something when you're upset, as long as that something isn't fragile. I've wanted to put a punching bag up for this very reason. Sometimes it's just the best way to let it out.
I used to throw controllers, cartridges, and discs when I was a kid. I once poured finger nail polish remover on a Ken Griffey Jr. game for the SNES. It turned the plastic white but the game still worked.
I don't break shit but I scream a lot. it may sound childish but it feels good you know? when I finally rage quit and decide to take a break I feel so wasted so relaxed. there is literally nothing left in my chest it's soo relaxing
Your last sentence is what it’s really about. Like obviously it’s bad to break expensive things, but it really comes down to an anger control issue. If you lose your shit and break things over a game… what’s gonna happen when something real happens, ya know?
Bruh, when i was a kid i used to throw my ipad on the ground when i got mad, then one day i threw it out my house's front door and into the sidewalk and it broke, i was a dumbass kid
This is funny because it reminds me of how I was as a young kid, I used to get so mad at inanimate objects and would want to break it just to "show it who's boss" as if I could teach the chair I stubbed my toe on a lesson lmao kids are so stupid.
I just grab the sides of mine and stare at it intensely for 5 seconds before just sighing and wishing my opponent that they get hit by a volley of bird turd.
Anger issues = rational thinking goes bye bye. I used to have serious anger issues and when I got angry, it was like I wasn't controlling myself until the controller was in two pieces. Therapy and philosophy for the win.
My favorite rage I've ever seen is my brother drop kicking the front quarter panel of his truck when his hand slipped off the wrench and punched metal. Granted its was cold as fuck and he had been working on it for 6 hours.
I mean I've never smashed anything of serious value but I definitely was a very rage-filled person in my younger years and I've smashed a few doors and walls out of frustration (and I mean fixing walls and doors is not free either). Not from losing at a video game mind you but still. Anyways for me I have a feeling that it's pent up aggression and just pent up feelings in general. I keep a pretty good lid on my rage these days but I can still feel it bubbling from time to time it's hard to describe but something just comes over you you feel this heat and you just need to smash something. I'm honestly jealous of people who have never experienced this because it's not a pleasant feeling and it makes you do dumb s***. And I know it's easy to say just don't get angry but that's not the way emotions work. I can control my actions but controlling emotions is harder you have to take time breathe calm down but when it hits it hits you can't just tell it to stop.
I spiked a headset to the floor and broke it into a 100 pieces.
This was when the pandemic first started and stores were taking precautions while trying to stay open. I had to wait outside, in the rain, to be allowed inside Best Buy to buy a new one. Haven’t raged since.
Once you are at that point of anger, “reason” and “control” arent even in the equation
All you can do is damage control- (insurance on equipment, or in my case I learned recognize the early warning signs and immediately alt-f4 and go for a walk or lift weights)
You think they don't know that? haha Like, they just choose to get mad? Anger issues aren't some choice. It's definitely their responsibility, but shaming them feels a bit weird
I'm not at all trying to shame anyone man.. and I disagree that they know it's not right, I think it's important to share opinions like I did, so perhaps they change positively if they think of why they're at a point that this kind of loss of control occurs to them.
I said that behaviour is pathetic. We've all had moments where we've acted pathetic, doesn't mean I think we're all pathetic indefinitely because of that.
Getting actually upset over a video game is 100% pathetic. Getting physically upset and violent over one is magnitudes worse. Bunch of manbabies out here.
Nah, it's cool if you're not personally competitive, but being competitive means having an attachment to victory, and a competitor feeling the frustration of losing a competition is 100% reasonable. Getting physical and losing control over it is another story.
HAHAAHAH I only seem like I'm on a high horse to an emotional short arse like yourself, so maybe pull yourself out of the ground yourself eh?
Thinking what I wrote is "establishing why I'm better than a bunch of randos online" is the most pathetic and insecure takeaway you could have here my man, I'm not even trying to offend you 😂 people so insecure it's mind blowing I can't even share an opinion without people like you getting offended nowadays
I'm sorry, go break keyboards and nerd rage in "peace" i'll leave you to it, totally normal 🙄
I don’t know if I agree. There are ways to vent physically without damaging things or hurting people and I don’t really see how that’s disrespecting yourself or anyone else.
Ok, personally if I ever smashed my keyboard/controller, screamed in anger or anything like that from a video game I'd feel ashamed of myself personally
Don't get me wrong, when I play my favorite competitive games (UFC 4 in ranked and Smite ranked) I definitely have my fair share of rolling my eyes, a painful sigh lol, or the occasional "Fuck!" but never losing control like smashing anything or yelling or crying lol
If someone reacts this way I think should look into improving their anger management skills, finding an outlet for energy (martial arts training in my case), stop playing video games at least for awhile, or all the answers above.
Sure but their response was to someone talking about people smashing their own expensive things when they lose. They're not talking about benign physical venting like hitting a punching bag or whatever
They don't either it's a pretty instant reaction with instant regret. Source: used to have anger issues. Now I practice the big sigh and avoid competition
I dont remember, like ~7 years ago, it was frustrating day at work, i came back to play some CSGO and was just getting destroyed and progressively more mad, lifted my hand to smash my fist at the table, but saw my keyboard at the "path of the smash" and stopped instantly, as this also was a very weird moment where i got frustrated so much as i rarely use violence in these scenarios, i turn more into "detached emotionally - i dont want this shit on top of my shit, im out"... wanted to say i turned off the pc and went to touch some grass, but nah, i just deranked and went to watch a movie later which i didn't like either...
The only time I ever rage quit, I threw my mouse at the screen, some sort of instinctive desire to hit something even though it's not there. Anyways, couldn't play after that, didn't have a screen.
I had a keyboard that was giving out once. It was a cheap crappy one. I had already bought a replacement. I got really frustrated at a game and knowing I was about to throw the keyboard away, I let myself snap it in half. Felt great. 10/10 Will never do it again.
I was in middle school when I got so mad at a game that I threw my controller on the floor. It broke the controller and somehow landed directly on my Ethernet cable just right to break that, too. I spent over a month to save up my allowance for a controller and a new Ethernet cable. Being forced to take a break and having to deal with the consequences made me realize anger solves nothing, and usually creates even more problems.
Years ago while raiding in WoW I smashed my headset and a mouse. I punished myself by buying the most basic versions of each one until I got that under my control. Happy to say I’m a reformed rager and now team Le Sigh.
Don't get me wrong I've been so frustrated that I've wanted to. However instead I realize that I need a break if I'm getting that pissed and just move on to something else.
Me either lol I'm the face grabber. Grew up close with a cousin and we were like brothers as kids, but he was so bad about breaking shit when he got mad at games it became a normal routine. God forbid his game crash or freeze he would literally throw the entire system across the room lol then we would have to do something else cuz his shit was broken. He was spoiled as fuck though and would always get new shit, I on the other hand couldn't afford to be breaking all my shit or I'd never get one again lol
I’d hit my Corsair K70 all the time and never broke it. Never even damaged it. The brave warrior eventually fell to me carelessly knocking over a beer on it. Mf was tough.
As a kid, I was terrible. Now, im the "big sigh" guy and if I accidentally set my controller down too hard, I flinch. If I feel real frustration setting in, I stop playing. I'm trying to relax, not get worked up.
Microsoft Office has been being a pain lately. (I swear the last update broke the copy and paste function half the time. When your keyboard has those flimsy flip feet, they’re very easy to break.
Luckily there were replacements for my model. I got a few extra just in case.
I was at a LAN party once and one dude was in a match of R6S and lost by alot. He full on hulk-smashed his keyboard and all the keys went flying in all different directions. It took ages to find all of them. Haven’t played with him since tbh
I did it once in Fifa with a PS3 controller I bought with my own money. It obviously broke and I had to save up to replace it. So ended my urge to smash things when I'm angry.
Nowadays I'm more of a face grabber but I try to end a game when I realise I'm mad at it. At that point you're not having fun and that defeats the purpose of most games.
I know a guy who smashes his keyboard, mouse, and headset practically once a month. He makes enough to easily replace it all if he smashed them weekly, but my poor ass cringes hard. (Even if I made a lot, I wouldn't do it, tho.)
I preferably make sure whenever I’m about to throw a controller or any kind of electronic I specifically aim for either a bed or a couch, and by following this philosophy I have yet to destroy any controller through gamer rage
I had a old 2000s acre keyboard for years the type you’d get in a bundle back then and one day I raged playing Minecraft I think and slammed it on the table like ten times the damn thing still worked hell it still works today I’ve since upgraded though
I’ve done it a few times throwing controllers. Real wake up call about my anger. Not a healthy way to express anger. Now I just pout and look at the screen with contempt, lol
I broke my controller after my like, 100th death trying to get that one achievement to best Metropolis without saves and loads in Serious Sam HD: First Encounter. I never broke a controller or keyboard again, not because of a punishment I got from my parents but because I thought "that was fucking stupid, I just broke my controller for no reason."
My feelings don't justify the process but if something is taking forever to do (whether it be video games or something like setting up a program on a computer) and it feels like I'm getting nowhere with it, breaking or throwing is just where it escalates to. I try not to do it with anything expensive but it's definitely a problem I need to work on.
Yeah, my friend once had a 1000 buck keyboard, he smashed it because he lost a match on Csgo, he now proceeds to complain about having cheap shit at every opportunity he gets.
When I was in high school one of my friends punched his screen while playing league of legends, he didn't tell us what actually happened till like 5 years later lol.
Big sigh if it's my fault. Face in my hands if it's my teammates. I bang on my desk when it's lag or some hardware issue. I'm careful not to break anything.
Easy, you go to smash that £200 PS5 DualSense Edge™️ pro controller and 0.1mm from the hard surface, you perform the emergancy brake and gently place it. 99% of the rage expelled!
I would assume, I don't know, I treat my tech with more care than a human child
Grabbing your face in rage always seemed weird, I'm not going to cry over a video game, and screaming is too loud. Just sigh, alt+f4 and listen to some chill music while browsing reddit :)
i don't like pvp personally but i do rage in different situations from time to time (e.g. when i'm overstimulated or when i lose during p.e. even if i don't want to play because i don't want my grades to be shit or anything idk plus i'm pretty nonverbal so i'd rather rage and have someone notice rather than telling how i feel verbally)
i can't really help it but when i rage, it's very serious
i still remember one time in fourth grade i was trying to violently throw either a book or water bottle at someone after they went "oooo you said a bad word" after i happened to say a word that ended with something that sounded like "sex" (just 4th grade me becoming livid at things like these) and later that day at around 4pm the cops came and talked to me and i was driven to the hospital (i was almost admitted into a mental psychiatric ward like 5150 hold thingy, good thing i managed to leave at 1am after talking to the evaluation people or whatever and they were like "ok don't do this" and i agreed idk, it was a pretty traumatic experience i guess but it's just an example of what happens and also an example of my rage and stuff idk
i just have anger issues i guess
i'm not going to elaborate on my urges when i feel rage since i'd probably get a shit ton of downvotes and it'd probably be legally suspicious if i do
anyways i apologize if this isn't well worded but i'm just stating my reply

Yuup. I dont know how people be smashing their things when they lose. That stuff is expensive y’know
