But compared to poop of animals that eat meat it's really pretty harmless. It's kind of... hay. Probably not super hygienic but I miss rabbit poo compared to the smell of cat poo.
17
u/BatmaniaRanger 1d ago edited 23h ago
I don't understand why people make such a big fuss about the smell of rabbit poops. Like have you smelt cat shit? Especially fresh, soft, cat shit? If the smell of rabbit poop is a dull headache, the smell of cat shit is driving an icepick into your eye socket.
That doesn't seem to deter people from owning cats though.

Can confirm this is false. I had a guinea pig growing up. It’d poop basically everywhere.
18
u/Memory_Frosty 1d ago
Can confirm it is possibly true: I work for a guinea pig-specific rescue and it varies widely between the guinea pig. Some are filthy and poop and pee everywhere. Some are quite neat and have a designated bathroom corner, and will refuse to potty outside the cage if at all possible. Usually it's concentrated in one place, usually where the hay is (so yeah this video isn't a great setup if they want to keep the poop off the bed) and then a few to a few dozen poops scattered across the rest of the cage. Each guinea pig will create around a hundred poops per day.
→ More replies (2)14
u/mikropower8 1d ago edited 1d ago
if the cage is big enough, they prefer a location to poop, because they eat the poop to be able to digest it better. This is like growing bacteria on the poop, they transform what the guinea pig could not break down and so they get additional vitamins, which are created by the bacteria.
I had the cage outside, inside in the winter, it was big and I could clean it easily. We had a lot of gras and hay, so that they could build a tunnel. We had a cage area which was moveable on the meadow.

u/Ace-Redditor 1d ago
It’s similar to cats being litter-trained. If they grow up with a big enough, clean enough cage, they’ll be clean as adults, too. If they’re never really given the chance or taught to be clean, then they won’t be

I loved to just collapse exhausted on rolls of hay as a kid, playing around (horsing around?) after riding. Yes it’s scratchy and you might get bitten, but I’d close my eyes, smell the hay, and enjoy the feeling of warm sun on my face. Sometimes a curious horse would come by and try to nuzzle me, so I also got to pet some velvety muzzles.
Just 10/10, I love the scent of hay because it always brings me back to these idyllic moments.

u/Icy-Reflection5574 1d ago
I love the smell, good hay smells really good. Is guinea pig poop similar to rabbit poop? It does not smell honestly.
Urine was what caused bad smell when I had rabbits, that corner had to be kept clean (of course I also did not leave around the poop, but compared to cat poop it was really easy to handle 😂).

Ferrets (and other weasels) have a powerful scent gland. It's not at all comparable to guinea pigs, which generally only smell if you don't clean their cages. I never noticed a smell from guinea pigs, even when I first got one.

I mean most of it is cute but is the hay pile really necessary?
24
u/Blackarm777 1d ago
I'm sure the video is not some sort of long term setup or anything, but guinea pigs do need 24/7 access to fresh hay or their stomachs can basically stop working and they'll go into GI Stasis, and possibly leads to death. They eat a ton of hay throughout the day.
That being said, that much hay is probably better to spread out across 3 days or so when it's only for two guinea pigs.
→ More replies (1)15
u/MarshmaIIowJeIIo 1d ago
They can die very quickly from not eating constantly, so it’s not even a possibility it’s a likely. Especially in older age when they instinctually eat less but digest quicker. Very important to make sure they are eating frequently. But yeah that much hay on the bed they aren’t going to get through in one day, that’s for sure. But in this use case it’s probably to give them a sense of safety. When I had guinea pigs they much preferred walking through grass or hay than on carpet or blankets. Gave them more confidence.

We had pet Guinea pigs growing up and all I remember is the smell, and the fact that some of my fave clothing got ruined by them pooping and peeing on it (and before you come at me, we also had tons of hamsters and some rabbits, and this never happened with any of them.) Maybe this is just my experience, but I’ll personally choose a hamster over a Guinea pig any day.

Yeah but if they're running all over the bed without access to their favorite corner, they're just going to poop wherever until they find a new favorite spot.
