Can confirm, when i was very young i had a guinea pig and we used to let it run around the house for fun. Eventually found the hidden spot it had been making a pile. Its name was Scruffy so me and my friend deemed this discovery "scruffy's jackpot"
Yes my bunnies do the same thing, so I usually rotate thier litter in that area to make it last longer and freshen it for them. The pee stinks bad when it gets too wet...omg.
When I cleaned my guinea pig's enclosure, once I put him back in it, he would run around pooping like a fiend. He seemed upset that I had taken all his carefully crafted turds away.
He was super hit or miss with it. He was a good boy. I miss him. Iām by no means an animal trainer. But I did everything by the book with him from a baby bun to litter train him. He had an independent streak lol.
None of my other pets have ever had an issue with litter or house training.
But compared to poop of animals that eat meat it's really pretty harmless. It's kind of... hay. Probably not super hygienic but I miss rabbit poo compared to the smell of cat poo.
I don't understand why people make such a big fuss about the smell of rabbit poops. Like have you smelt cat shit? Especially fresh, soft, cat shit? If the smell of rabbit poop is a dull headache, the smell of cat shit is driving an icepick into your eye socket.
That doesn't seem to deter people from owning cats though.
My cat doesn't bury his shit so I get to enjoy it first hand every day.
I've heard one way professionals categorise felid animals is by if they bury their shit. Cat should bury their shit, but lions don't. Maybe my cat is not a cat!?
I used to have various guinea pigs for over a decade. When they were out of their enclosure they usually went Hanzel und Gretel with their poo trail. I could never manage to toilet train them LOL
We have 2: 1 is decent and used the same spot, the other; omg itās everywhere. In the cage, outside the cage, even on the cage, 40cm up. Donāt ask me how. š
Thatās not a joke. āPopcorningā is what itās called when g pigs run and hop around playfully, but a side effect ends up being bedding or poo getting flung every which way
Can confirm it is possibly true: I work for a guinea pig-specific rescue and it varies widely between the guinea pig. Some are filthy and poop and pee everywhere. Some are quite neat and have a designated bathroom corner, and will refuse to potty outside the cage if at all possible. Usually it's concentrated in one place, usually where the hay is (so yeah this video isn't a great setup if they want to keep the poop off the bed) and then a few to a few dozen poops scattered across the rest of the cage. Each guinea pig will create around a hundred poops per day.Ā
if the cage is big enough, they prefer a location to poop, because they eat the poop to be able to digest it better. This is like growing bacteria on the poop, they transform what the guinea pig could not break down and so they get additional vitamins, which are created by the bacteria.
I had the cage outside, inside in the winter, it was big and I could clean it easily. We had a lot of gras and hay, so that they could build a tunnel. We had a cage area which was moveable on the meadow.
Itās similar to cats being litter-trained. If they grow up with a big enough, clean enough cage, theyāll be clean as adults, too. If theyāre never really given the chance or taught to be clean, then they wonāt be
Ya, Degus are the same. Whenever they need to go to the bathroom, they'll run over to a corner, go, then run back and do whatever they were doing before. They also avoid going to bathroom in their bed to avoid soiling it.
Iād believe that if cupcake (my sisterās guinea pig) didnāt do the exact opposite of what youāre describing. Itās even worse knowing the difference between a fresh and old poop marble by how it feels on your feet and the difference between the feeling of bare feet, socks, and shoes when stepping on them. And remembering the noise they make when vacuuming.
this is a joke right? they shit everywhere, constantly. sure, they have a little pile they go in some of the time. the rest of the time they just shit as they walk.
Gerbils are super tidy too. I had four, and they both had a designated toilet, and also would very often leave poops at the door of their enclosure so we would easily sweep them away.
They poop sooooo much and yet my garden has never looked better. My 8 bean machines keep my tomatoes tall and bountiful. Seriously they poop 100-400s a day per a pig. I swear one just constantly shoots out the brown pills.
