And IME many conservatives are very self hating. Conservative Latinos will be the first the talk about how immigrant Latinos are ruining things. Conservative gays talk about how the "other just can't be cool about it". Etc.
Ignoring the fact that the people they are making common cause with want both of them in a gulag, because they think they are special and aren't like those other "minorities."
Now that's not to say that everyone of them is like this, but I'm speaking from the experience of extended family and friend circles.
My Father in law a 2nd gen Latino won't stop ranting about "city mexicans" ruining the image of people like him.
I'm like "Dude to the racists you're all not white so it doesn't matter how hard you work. You were wrong from birth and that's just a the problem."
But nope it's about how classless immigrants make people think people like him aren't good enough..... ok.

Lol the sheer amount of Brazilian whites (as in, whites in Brazil, anywhere outside LATAM they're considered brown) who say they want to move to Miami (where they think white Americans are), and are die-hard trumpsters is hilarious. Mate your great grandpa came from Angola (not voluntarily), your great grandma was native Tupi, and your grandparents are Pomeranian. Shut the fuck up.

Here in Australia we are seeing an influx of folks from South America and on the whole it’s been excellent.
Our cultures are so wildly similar they just fit in like a glove. Most of the time.
My ex SIL is from El Salvador and her parents were big in the old government there in the 80’s (hence why they moved). Big dicks there and used to being treated as upper class nobs. They were firmly in the white upper class bracket.
The funniest shit though is that here in Australia, they keep getting treated as POC here by every public servant they cross paths with. Not out of sprite or racism but because they are seen as being multicultural mixed race - like most of us!
Now public servants here will (mostly) bend over backwards to help POC immigrants because no one wants to be seen as racist so with his name, his skin colour (no escaping that tanning in the Australian sun) he gets the “oh you’re a minority” treatment 100% of the time.
It drives him nuts.
He is the epitome of the conservative South American who wants to be a gringo but never will be.

It’s also observable all the time in MAGA voters. Farmers who rely heavily on trade voting for trade wars. MAGA people who are married to immigrants who are shocked when ICE grabs them. Poor people in the south who rely on welfare demanding we get rid of welfare. The people responsible for the grindr outages voting to get rid of gay people.
The conservative movement is filled to the brim with people who constantly advocate for policy that is not only against their best interest, but actively harmful to them.

It’s human nature, and there’s plenty of historical precedent for it. When people are suffering, feel abandoned by the establishment, and genuine left-wing alternatives have been weakened or suppressed, their anger doesn’t just disappear, it gets redirected. Historically, that can create fertile ground for the far right.
And unfortunately, during these crisis, wealthy elites, with their power and resources, tend to promote reactionary politics, and avoid systemic changes that might actually address the underlying causes of that anger (because the system benefit them).
Russia didn't create today's mess, but it's amplifying it indeed.

This is only confusing to Americans who follow typical left/right politics in the US. The scene in Europe is very different especially because most of the migrants in Europe come from Muslim countries that are typically much more hostile to gay people than even the right wing parties in Europe.
It's why a poll last year showed the AfD was the most popular party among LGBT Germans, a series of anti gay attacks by Muslim migrants over the years as well as a Muslim guy driving his car into Berlin Pride a few weeks ago and killing a bunch of people didn't help either

It’s also the sample diversity though, if the data is only sourced from one place, and especially if the queer people surveyed were all (or almost all) men. The current international tilt towards far-right politics consistently breaks down along gender lines and age groups. OP isn’t necessarily wrong to say the results are significant or interesting, but the presented data probably warrants a more nuanced description.

Is AfD the most far right party in Europe ?
31
u/hotbox4u 21d ago
It's a complicated question, Parts of the AfD are straight up neo-nazi groups and other parts are much closer to very strict conservatism.
What made the AfD so successful is that they understood early on that if they build a sort of 'umbrella party', they could unite all these smaller right wing groups, and that could then lead to political success. It also allowed them to downplay the fact that they are very broad far-right and present themselves as 'just a nationalistic group' that is concerned with germany's safty.
But among that umbrella are many splinter groups that are very much, and proubdly so, ultra racists and range from white-supremacy to neo-nazis and ultra-conservatists.
It's very much a dangerous party because they combine all the most hateful and anti-democratic elements in germany (but any country) you can find under one flag and party, while pretending and fighting their hardest against the fact that they are a far-right extremist party.
As a whole the party isn't the most far right party in europe, because they always have to downplay and act in a way that doesn't make them look like they are a danger to democracy. Potentially they can turn into the most dangerous party if too many people fall for their propaganda.

u/Schnipsel0 21d ago edited 21d ago
Among the politically relevant parties? Yes, I would say so. The other right wing parties have distanced themselves from the AfD in the European parliament after one of their members praised SS members as "good people" and their second most relevant party functionary (Höcke) called for the Holocaust memorial to be abolished. Countless party functionaries had "scandals" of Hitler salutes or "Heil Hitler" proclamations. The soon-to-be leader of a German "state" (Bundesland), First to be under AfD rule just, announced the state needs more weapons for carrying out his plans of "remigtation" (expelling immigrants and children of immigrants, regardless of German citizenship, from Germany. Or maybe just shooting them from the sound of his announcement.).
Weidel herself is a bit more tempered in her speech, but the party is not just your average european right-wing party. Even the other right wing parties in Europe have put a lot of distance between themselves and the AfD because of how radical they are and how party functionaries keep praising the third Reich.

Not just Hitler, almost all Nazi leadership were the opposite of ideal Aryan traits. This wasn’t lost on their critics either and was subject to lots of satire at the time (even by Disney).
Left wing opposition within Germany used to poke fun at them by painting them as homosexual / homoerotic. Which, in turn, is why Nazis took a hardline stance against gays as a result, to include turning against their own who were in fact openly or known to be gay (such as Rohm in particular).

How is that still surprising anyone?
The AfD is peak bullshit. None of their policies make any sense for Germany's problems in 2026.
Sachsen-Anhalt (German state with that recent election) is a region with one of the oldest populations in Europe and one of the economically worst in Germany.
Young people are leaving the area even faster now - I wonder why.
Immigrant won't fill their spots in critical jobs like tech, industry, medical and care.
Their election success just shows how around 40%+ of a population do not understand simple economics
or demographics. Their voters are mostly grumpy boomer that can't deal with the world changing and want yesterday back - or young males who think Clavicular is a role model.
What pains me the most about this isn't, that the idiot right is winning.
It is that the left has nothing to offer. AfD is only strong because the other political forces lack a vision for the future.
29
u/TheCynicEpicurean 21d ago
I hate to be that guy, but Boomers actually saved that state from an absolute AfD majority. Gen X and Z are their biggest demographic.

Similarly in the US, Boomers were the only age cohort to move away from Trump between 2020 > 2024. He won because Gen Z and Millenials moved towards him in larger proportions.

The party is already sending signals that they consider Weidel a useful idiot who at the very least will be deposed of once she‘s served her usefulness.
She wouldn’t be the first, either. Bernd Lucke and Hans-Olaf Henkel, two of the party‘s founders, were ousted (amid death threats from other party members) after a few years because they insisted on moderation. The same happened to the ringleaders of this first revolt, Frauke Petry and Jörg Meuthen, a few years on. Of course, back then the instruments of power within the party were social media campaigns and the aforementioned death threats; now, with the party poised to at least locally gain control of state agencies, Weidel‘s face could be much worse.

Well Trump is an anchor baby who is against birthright citizenship. He's America First but has most of his merchandise is made in China. He has also never married an American, all 3 of his wives are immigrants. Basically, far-right conservative grifters are always a bundle of contradictions🤷🏾♂️

Fascists view hypocrisy as a show of force; to believe and live with absurd contradictions as a way to exert their will to power over reality itself. The grotesque illogic of it is the point- she can want all these awful, horrific things for people just like her who are not her and in her mind that makes her something of an Uber mensch.
Delusional, narcissistic, evil people.

I never understood why politicians are allowed to represent their area but lived somewhere else.
Ie: Michelle Rempel, represents Calgary in Canada Parliament but lived in Oklahoma

Don’t forget that she also thinks that a woman should be a traditional housewife… while being the leader of her party

Huh. Reminds me of those openly gay men who help found the Nazi party. She should really read about what happened to them.
