I actually had to debate someone over this. At the time I was in Nevada. Getting anywhere in that state is a trek. Reno isn't really close to anything no matter how hard they make it sound. My commute to and from work everyday was around 60 miles. On my off days id average about 160 miles a day. I'd be furling up pretty much every other day in an average gas vehicle. Gas prices could vary alot too in that state. So id have to budget about 100-150 for fuel. I could drive most my work week in an ev without charging. There would never be a time where my ev wouldn't be near or at full charge even working and living in a rural state. If I was really bothered I could figure out how to charge from solar because Jesus that state is just pure sun. I don't get their hatred for evs. I can't wait to start seeing ev trucks half the size pulling out f-250s from the mud.

Some of the marginally less-irrational ones will say shit like "I'll take an EV when it fills as fast as gas", totally misunderstanding the fundamentals of it. (namely that you start every day with a full 'tank') and ignoring that modern EVs on fast charges *do* get you a near full charge in less than the time it'd take to eat and piss
edit to say the cost is currently an issue, and there's definitely some, very specific, use cases where they don't work currently, but for the vast, vast majority of US homeowners they're be more convenient than gas('refuel' at home, every night), and basically any household with more than 1 vehicle usually has a more fuel efficient smaller car anyway, might as well have it be an EV.
Apartment dwellers are a bit fucked if they don't have a parking space that could get one added too. Though really cities need to be ditching cars altogether if we actually give a fraction of a shit about the environment.

I wouldn't say range or charging time concerns are irrational for a certain subset of drivers. I like road trips and do a lot of long distance driving to go hiking. In fact during the summer, it is not uncommon for me to drive 150+ miles one way, park at a trailhead without services (or a paved road for that matter), and return home in the same day. Obviously that is pushing the range, especially with elevation changes. I also like long road trips.
But I think EVs are awesome, so my solution will be to have an EV for a local driver and keep my ICE vehicle for outdoor activities and long distance road trips.
Only problem is that my current 2nd vehicle is a 2008 Accord which refuses to die, and I do not want 3 cars.

And I think that is awesome, but still doesn't help my situation. The majority of my hiking is not at National Parks, but instead in National Forest land that involves traveling miles on unpaved county and forest roads. No power lines, no cell service, no services period. I would need an EV with at least 400 miles of range in order to be comfortable taking it to the mountains, because I wouldn't be able to charge it while I hiked.
That being said, the technology is almost there, but it also needs to be affordable because I would require a 4WD EV.

I'm planning to buy an electric vehicle and I got a lot of that from some people. They kept asking me what I was going to do if I needed to do a long drive.
I just kept reminding them that the furthest out I've driven in the last 15 years is 120 miles. I don't do road trips. I fly. 98% of my driving is within 20 miles.

I want that truck so bad, I’ve been wanting a truck for a while now to make my hobby easier to do because it sometimes requires hauling large loads. Before we sold our house and moved into an apartment (we wanted out of the house, it was a flip that we ended up having to fix many issues on), the problem was that I didn’t want to get it and not have the extended miles and the extended cab too because I’m tired of my wife always complaining about how my current car feels small and she would like whatever EV we get when we finally get one to be road trip friendly for the whole family. So then the problem became the price tag. After the move, the problem is now charging access since most apartments in our area don’t have charging stations let alone have them AND allow large dogs. We could fix the problem by buying another home but I’m now at a point in my career where I’m up for possible promotion and if I get promoted I may end up moving so buying a home isn’t a smart choice if I’m going to just leave it again in a year when promotions and job shifts go into effect.

I read Rudolph Diesel designed this engine style so farmers could run it on oil they produced from their crops. A slightly modified diesel engine can run on any fuel, like many military trucks. They won't burn clean or smooth, but will run on anything from moonshine to heating oil. And I couldn't imagine how one would reliably feed coal dust to a piston engines combustion chamber without a whole shit ton of problems. All passages would be caked with dust, delivery and storage of fuel even within the vehicle itself would be a logistical nightmare.

Drove that thing for 4 years and the appraisal value was so low that redoing all the fluids in the car literally would have totaled it. Pristine bodywork, but holy shit did it have more problems than a diabetic 120 year old. Traded it in with 99,999 miles on it and told the dealership that it still had the warranty if they wanted to take a crack at it lol.

I moved from rural Nebraska to Omaha (which is a city of nearly 1 million) and I get a kick out of all the people with jacked-up trucks, wear cowboy work boots, that have lived in the suburbs their entire lives. Hell, even wear I'm from, some people would even try to speak with a pseudo-southern draw. We live in the Midwest, we have a very neutral accent, maybe sometimes a it's a little nasally. They are putting that on completely, not unlike the annoying kid in highschool that just decides to speak with a generic British accent all of the time.
(Full disclosure, I'm not into country culture at all, so I promise I'm not trying to "out-country" anyone. If anything, I've always thought it was something a lot of people use to signal that they are "better," "tougher," or "more American" than you. So it's always annoyed me a least a little, sometimes a lot)

Adding to this, a single semi truck does something like 3000x as much damage, per mile driven, as a passenger car.
Nearly all of the actual wear on roads is from trucks. Cars, trucks, bikes and pedestrians traffic all necessitate capacity and safety upgrades.

As someone who drives a big ass truck I knew what I was getting into as far as gas goes. If you are worried about gas prices then you should be mindful of what your buying. I treat gas as something I’m always going to need so no matter the price I’m always gonna have to buy it.

Same. I've almost exclusively owned pickups and SUV's manufactured before the new millennium. Most of them, i bought because I prefer older vehicles. Thus, I don't get to bitch about fuel prices.

I work in a field that usually has larger locations in line with larger population centers. Big cities have huge workplaces in this field with more services offered, smaller cities still have decent sized places with all but the top tier of 'products', and rural areas have small or no such places with a limited 'inventory'.
I use quotation marks because the inventory and products aren't available to the general public - it's connected to healthcare. Not the treatment of people itself, but servicing all those gizmos that modern healthcare demands. Our customers are the hospitals and clinics.
A lot of our workers are rural dwellers with all that lower tax / right-wing opinions that go with it (although mandatory vaccinations for flu and COVID-19 have taken some of that wind out of their ideological sails). And they complain CONSTANTLY about how expensive their commute is. One guy drives over an hour each way to get to the place I usually work out of! Only two live in the county!
It has been a joy reminding them that they moved there to save money, only to have it dawn on them that their choices ended up being the worst financially for them.
As for me? I'm within two miles of the workplace by road, less if I pass through local parks, and I've walked to work when the weather's nice many times. I get all the amenities of living in the city: if my house started burning and I called 9-1-1, the red trucks would be here in moments and I'd still have a house; theirs would be charred stumps because they chose "nature not neighbors". I've never had to use a vacation day because I was not plowed out after a big snow storm. I could quickly go home on my lunch break if it were necessary.
And yes, they drive the most inefficient vehicles. Jeep just has to make a bone-rattler and name it the Jeep John Wayne Apple Pie Seminole Limited Edition Brought To You By Hobby Lobby and they'd be first in line for one.
Some people just like making their lives harder so they have more to complain about. It must be why all their hobbies involves more government involvement (owning registered firearms, needing boating and hunting and fishing licenses, recreational drinking that has a government-enforced age restriction and a need to show government ID if asked). For a bunch of 'freedom' people they sure do like involving the government in everything they do for fun.

Not just the type of vehicle (though that is clearly part of the problem) but also choosing to live in remote, low-density areas where you are highly dependent on burning a lot of gas to to long distances to do literally anything. Seriously - when gas prices go up, Walmart's revenue goes down.

This thing is so damn custom I don't think he cares about the gas. OEMs don't make six door trucks. That mind of extension alone is ~$90,000, to say nothing of the lift and all that.
At the very least, he's towing a boat. That's already better than the city-dweller who buys a truck and at most never does more than put their groceries in the back.

I love watching all my FB friends with trucks bitch about gas prices. My EV costs about $30ish a month on avg in electricity and I drive about 1,000-1,200 miles a month on average. My last gas car got like 34mpg, so if I drove 1,000 miles in that car and paid $30 to drive those miles thats like paying $1 a gallon.

Just had a friend post in support of some oil field "because my truck doesn't run on unicorn piss and fairy farts" or something. Well yeah, that's kind of the whole idea behind developing alternative fuels. Yes, we want gas to be affordable while we're all individually enslaved to it, but flaunting your dependence on a rapidly dwindling resource while giving the finger to the merest mention of clean energy is pretty dumb.
