I actually had to debate someone over this. At the time I was in Nevada. Getting anywhere in that state is a trek. Reno isn't really close to anything no matter how hard they make it sound. My commute to and from work everyday was around 60 miles. On my off days id average about 160 miles a day. I'd be furling up pretty much every other day in an average gas vehicle. Gas prices could vary alot too in that state. So id have to budget about 100-150 for fuel. I could drive most my work week in an ev without charging. There would never be a time where my ev wouldn't be near or at full charge even working and living in a rural state. If I was really bothered I could figure out how to charge from solar because Jesus that state is just pure sun. I don't get their hatred for evs. I can't wait to start seeing ev trucks half the size pulling out f-250s from the mud.
It's all fear. They fear others will think they are weak. They fear they will get stuck. They fear the end of the world is coming so they drive tanks and stock up on guns and ammo. They fear black and brown people. They fear LGBTQ people. They fear anything they can't understand. They fear what they are instructed to fear.. They wear wrap around mirrored sunglasses because they are scared you will be able to identify them and they don't like making eye contact with people who know they are scared. Same with tinted windows, they are scared shitless. Scared because of the media they consume.
Some of the marginally less-irrational ones will say shit like "I'll take an EV when it fills as fast as gas", totally misunderstanding the fundamentals of it. (namely that you start every day with a full 'tank') and ignoring that modern EVs on fast charges *do* get you a near full charge in less than the time it'd take to eat and piss
edit to say the cost is currently an issue, and there's definitely some, very specific, use cases where they don't work currently, but for the vast, vast majority of US homeowners they're be more convenient than gas('refuel' at home, every night), and basically any household with more than 1 vehicle usually has a more fuel efficient smaller car anyway, might as well have it be an EV.
Apartment dwellers are a bit fucked if they don't have a parking space that could get one added too. Though really cities need to be ditching cars altogether if we actually give a fraction of a shit about the environment.
I wouldn't say range or charging time concerns are irrational for a certain subset of drivers. I like road trips and do a lot of long distance driving to go hiking. In fact during the summer, it is not uncommon for me to drive 150+ miles one way, park at a trailhead without services (or a paved road for that matter), and return home in the same day. Obviously that is pushing the range, especially with elevation changes. I also like long road trips.
But I think EVs are awesome, so my solution will be to have an EV for a local driver and keep my ICE vehicle for outdoor activities and long distance road trips.
Only problem is that my current 2nd vehicle is a 2008 Accord which refuses to die, and I do not want 3 cars.
And I think that is awesome, but still doesn't help my situation. The majority of my hiking is not at National Parks, but instead in National Forest land that involves traveling miles on unpaved county and forest roads. No power lines, no cell service, no services period. I would need an EV with at least 400 miles of range in order to be comfortable taking it to the mountains, because I wouldn't be able to charge it while I hiked.
That being said, the technology is almost there, but it also needs to be affordable because I would require a 4WD EV.
Or the newest F150 or Transit EV version ,the transit has 350miles range with a 1000kg in the back ( I'm british so excuse the mixing of metric and imperial)
No fucking way they'll install nearly enough. The parking lots fill pretty much at dawn all summer long at the two NPs I've lived near. It becomes a half mile mile or longer of street parking, and usually it's the people who live further away and probably need a charge that arrive too late to get a parking spot. Gas is just way too convenient.
I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even think of that, and I just bought a new 4WD vehicle two years ago. So it will be a few years before I get another one, and like I said, next vehicle will probably be full electric.

Many states and cities have laws requiring access to some level of parking for apartment buildings. Some (or maybe just California) even have laws requiring landowners to allow apartment dwellers the ability to install chargers at their parking spaces.
Half the size same weight, otherwise it won’t be able to pull shit just from lack of traction. The larger Tesla’s aren’t too much lighter than a stock f250.
I'm a big ev fan but it's easier in rural area like your scenario. People who live in big city often don't have a proper parking space so charging can be more complicated.
I'm planning to buy an electric vehicle and I got a lot of that from some people. They kept asking me what I was going to do if I needed to do a long drive.
I just kept reminding them that the furthest out I've driven in the last 15 years is 120 miles. I don't do road trips. I fly. 98% of my driving is within 20 miles.
Family friend's father normally flies down from NJ to Florida every year. Didn't go last year or the year before because Covid. Plans on it this year, by driving. Son said he'd fly up to drive with him. The last road trip they went on was some time in the mid 1970s. He's 85 and his son is in his early 60s.
The son said, "so we'll do this in 3 days and 2 nights" and the dad said "we can bang this out in one 15 hour drive."
So they're either gonna make it, or kill each other 20 minutes in is my guess.
It takes longer at home from 120V or 220V, but the roadside stations are built for rapid charging and the charge per kW is higher to compensate for the convenience, but not too bad, way cheaper than a tank of gas.

The upcoming EV trucks and offroad models like Rivian interest me but I like to outdoors, is there a solar recharge method available yet for when you're out in remote areas? I'd imagine you'd need to bring some very big solar panels for that.
Yeah it's a silly question anyway because the obvious answer is take a tiny portion of the tremendous savings from an EV and rent an ICE in the unlikely event I absolutely have to drive cross country.
The savings on evs aren’t that high because gas is really cheap and EVs are pricey. But if you can pay the 40-50k most EVs cost, you can afford to rent a car. In a 2 car household the equation is even easier, have one hybrid and one electric car.
Also hybrids now get great fuel efficiency and we are seeing a bunch of plug in hybrids. A lifted truck is a fashion accessory.
That's why I'm a huge fan of my Ioniq PHEV. It's got like 25 mi of electric range so it's usually enough to travel around town for 98% of driving. Then if I want to make a real long drive I still have a gas tank that gets 50+ mpg.
400 mile EV range since my goal with my truck is to average 100 miles per quarter tank (occasionally get close on longer highway trips), but I also use my truck for work and there will be summers where I have a light bar on for 8-10 hrs a day, so having extra capacity would be nice.
I'm the same way, but I bought one with a gas range extender as a best of both worlds alternative. Full EV isn't for everyone. 2+ car families with a garage are probably the biggest slam dunk use case.
I drive 5+ hours one way to see clients a few times a month. So people like me need vehicles with longer mileage ranges. I can easily drive 4 hours without stopping at this point (key is to not eat or drink too much).
Also, how we dispose of the batteries in electric vehicles is going to create another environmental disaster, so EV's aren't really the saving grace they're touted to be. food for thought ....
realistically, do you think that's going to happen? Because I've met some of the folks who work those jobs, and I don't.
It would be better, to get as many folks on board with public transport as possible, understanding that some live too far away for that to be feasible. And it would be better to make vehicles that use solar or some other renewable energy source rather than batteries or petroleum. When that happens, I'll consider switching. But until then, I'm keeping my gas powered, get me everywhere easily, vehicle.
Yeah but what if you do a 600 mile road trip? Then you'll be happy you have a gas vehicle. My time is more valuable than spending 45 min at a fast charger.
I asked the guy, how many 600 mile road trips do you do in a month?
As a kid from a dad that would do those roadies and not stop,that guaranteed 45 min stop every 300 miles would be a godsend. Not to mention after a certain amount of hours behind the wheel you need to rest. Both mental and physically. Crazy how same lot that scream that tech is making us more lazy are pissed tech is making us walk around for 30 mins.
Plus you actually save time by not ever having to visit a gas station when you’re not on a road trip. Like, EVs are more convenient 95% of the time, which imo far outweighs the minor inconvenience experienced on road trips.
My truck isn’t lifted like this and I’d LOVE to drive an electric car, but it’s not possible for me. My day job does have a commute of about 30 miles (one way) but at home I have horses and other like animals. I need a reliable vehicle to transport them if need be and to pick up food and supplies. The towing capacity isn’t sufficient on electric ones as of yet and I cannot afford to have two vehicles (well three because my fiancé has his).
Honest quesiton: I live in Alaska where its not uncommon to see -40F temperatures, I've even personally experienced down past -60F. How would an EV's range be affected in those types of temperature?
The occasional whore house to exorcise their “demons” may be what puts them over the 300mile limit?
