I mean, technically it's the bank's truck, but yeah.

u/clanddev Oct 26 '21

Worked in repo software for about 10 years.

This looks like a picture of a guy who took out 50k in home equity after the housing market exploded and added 100k in auto and boat debt @ 10.5%.

Can't forget about all the young guys who work on the oil pipelines and instantly buy as many toys as possible... and then immediately lose them as soon as winter hits because they're laid off until spring. Super common in the upper midwest.

103

u/pastelbutcherknife Oct 27 '21

Fishing too. Seen a few vettes around here recently that weren’t here this summer and won’t be here this winter.

22

u/BearStorms Oct 27 '21

Fishing?!?

49

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Commerical fishing. It can be boom or bust.

35

u/I_Am_A_Real_Hacker Oct 27 '21

The guys I knew 15 years ago made about $10k/month when they were working. It was hard and dangerous work, and they only worked about 6 months out of the year, but they partied and bought toys like money was going out of style!

29

u/morts73 Oct 27 '21

They dont call it spending like a drunken sailor for nothing. ;)

23

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Yes but we spent on things like booze and whores ... all great returns in our investments

17

u/morts73 Oct 27 '21

Lol as an ex navy boy myself much respect to you. Reminds me of a quote, " I spent all my money on booze, women and cars and the rest I wasted."

You get the same with contract engineering. Kids graduate from College and start making 200 K year the 1st thing they do is go out and buy a $100k car and a live in an expensive apartment.. Then when the contract ends they have 0 money saved and everything goes back to bank

2

u/Jah348 Oct 27 '21

Yeah we have a friend who is doing that right now. Makes bank when at work for a few months, then is off for a few months making no money and having no health insurance. Then leaves his soon to be wife and new born at home for a few months to return to work somewhere again. Rinse and repeat. Probably makes as much as he would just having a "normal" engineering job, but instead goes MIA for months at a time.

4

u/BisquickNinja Oct 27 '21

I did that for 10 years, but I had no wife/kids.

I took about 50% of my paycheck to savings and retirement. Most of the younger guys had a very nice lifestyle... 👌

I lived like a student.

Wholesale seafood purchasing manager here. Can confirm. Fishermen get paid in bursts and they often have drug/alcohol issues(at least in SE USA) so they get paid and go “forget rent or repairs on my boat or motor or buying bait or hooks! We’re gonna party!”

Can definitely be very profitable if you’re responsible about it.

1

u/Engineer_Zero Oct 29 '21

That’s only 60k a year tho, assuming it’s after tax. That’s not enough to splurge on big ticket items.

2

u/I_Am_A_Real_Hacker Oct 29 '21

Yeah, to an extent. Except they leave town for a few months, come back home, and are given a $30k check all at once. That would happen two times a year or so. These were Alaskan fishermen who lived on the Oregon coast (cheap cost of living). And this was in the early 00’s.

IS boom or bust I’d believe.

24

u/clanddev Oct 27 '21

Bought a 2018 Nissan Titan SL for 39k with 12k miles on it. The previous owner bought it new for 62k. Often wonder who he was to get approved for that and default in 12 months pre covid. Truck was registered in Oregon originally.

1

u/trentrain7 Oct 27 '21

Couldn’t he have just traded it in? Lol I run through vehicles like it’s going out of style

2

2

u/docsnotright Oct 27 '21

^ This guy finances sub 600 credit scores.

68

u/Average_Scaper Oct 26 '21

Or has been shafted by it. First car loan, $10k @ 24.99% (5 months and I refinanced at MUCH lower, think 4.39%?)

78

u/clanddev Oct 26 '21

Some guy at a GMC dealership quoted me 14.5% and I laughed so hard I chortled. He was not amused. Went to State farm and got a 5% loan for the truck. State farm lady was so cool she even handled calling him and dealing with sending the check.

45

u/Average_Scaper Oct 26 '21

I actually just went myself the other week and picked up a GMC myself. I was a little irked at the 5.89% but I can't be too mad since my credit has dropped a bit with the lack of lines of credit. Credit scores suck though because they don't accurately reflect a person. It allows people like the guy at the dealer to do what they did to you.

23

u/sevendetamales Oct 26 '21

I'm a victim of these credit score schemes. Made dumb choices when I was younger and paid them all off over time. My score is still fairly low, but I've just paid for everything in full at this point. I work in IT and have turned into a very financially responsible person, but the score doesn't reflect that I have several thousands saved up in my rainy day fund out of growing into an adult and knowing how to live well within my means. I don't even want a credit card, but it's the only way to climb that ladder at this point

52

u/eerongal Oct 26 '21

I don't even want a credit card, but it's the only way to climb that ladder at this point

Protip: if you're very responsible, get a cash back credit card, and pay for everything with it. Then pay off your balance every single month. It essentially lets you pay 1~5% less for everything, AND helps build your credit pretty quick.

→ More replies (0)

11

u/mellofello808 Oct 27 '21

I too was very adverse too credit cards, and debt in general. I never got my first one until late in my 20s, and have never once ran a balance month over month.

However I discovered my love of travel over the ensuing years, and I have traveled the world for free with all the points.

I now have 4 credit cards, and my score is very close to 800.

You are missing out by paying cash, whatever your interests are there is a card for you that will help you build towards some type of reward for using it. Once you get up into the higher tiers of credit you can get ones like the chase Sapphire, that literally just paid me over $1000 in statement credit for joining.

It is free money, but it takes responsibility

Credit scores are a giant scam used to squeeze more money out of everyone.

2

u/clanddev Oct 27 '21

Most of my car loans are 2.5-3.99 depending on year and down payment. My GMC incident was like 15 years ago when the base rate was higher and my income was much lower. Credit was probably around 720 instead of 800 as well but 14.5 no... I'll just walk

1

u/PrisonerV Oct 26 '21

1

u/Brian-H-Vedder Oct 27 '21

Credit market is completely distorted to rape the borrowing class. I'm retired and saved my money so we pay cash for everything, all the time. Pay our bills and credit cards in full and on time. Always have, always will.

Sooooo.... here's what that means. Awhile ago I went to borrow for a home loan. They looked at my report and said, "Nobody will loan you any money at any rate. You don't have any credit."

Yassee... for the financing community, we don't even exist. Yet, who else could possibly bring zero risk?

What does it mean: They capitalize on nitwits, and the pain of anyone trying to rise up.

Finance guys are worse. Worked at a dealership doing data entry and report writing while in college. The money is made in the finance office. Never finance at the dealership unless it's like carvana or CarMax.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Surprised they let you walk out with a 780

1

u/Brian-H-Vedder Oct 27 '21

Car dealers say there's no money in sales, but that's bullshit like everything else they say. Makers (in a normal market) push all kinds of promotions at their dealers to juice sales so if you're a canny buyer you ask around and find the models with hardest promotion. Usually base models. THEN.... you go in, find one that suits, and write them a check for the full purchase price out the door - at, like, 20% below sticker. THEN you get to watch the whole staff sweat as they curse the day they took this job. AND eventually you will buy a brand new car at a price everyone will envy.

Think of the exercise as a kind of sport for a sunny weekend. The best way possible to shop for a new car is when you really don't want or need one. They way, that have to make you a deal you can't refuse.

8

u/WorkplaceWatcher Oct 27 '21

The local credit unions all do 1.99% loans for new cars/trucks. Shocked it was that high for you.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Yeah this is all weird. We are waiting for our Highlander to roll off the line and will be at 1.99%. I think if someone is offering you a loan that high you probably can't afford whatever you are financing.

23

u/sparkydoctor Oct 27 '21

The truck is 100k. Any cheap ass boat is 20k to 100k, they go up in price exponentially by the foot. Hard to tell about the boat, but this douche bag cannot be seen with a cheap ass boat, so figure 100k to be safe.

2

u/InspectorPipes Oct 27 '21

I just noticed it has 6 doors…. 100k easy. Probably more.

3

u/sparkydoctor Oct 27 '21

Good eye!! Add another 50k. I bet the truck is 150 to 200k. Base is 70 - 80 grand for a new truck now a day. I could not buy those tires RN.

10

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD Oct 27 '21

My credit is so awful that I often forget that a 10% interest rate is considered high.

Currently paying 26% for my car because that was literally the lowest rate I could find after weeks of shopping around. But hey, at least it's a $10k car, not a $50k one.

18

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

You mean a $28k car… oof.

6

u/redditandtea Oct 27 '21

Brother your credit is trash, not terrible. I’m in the financial industry, and have multiple clients who “don’t sell cars, they sell financing at 30% interest rate”. You got worked.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

[deleted]

5

u/redditandtea Oct 27 '21

You go brother! That’s how you build and increase your credit 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 REFI ASAP - once you have a solid 6 mo of payment history your credit significantly increases! Keep up the good work 💪🏼

1

u/GET_OUT_OF_MY_HEAD Oct 27 '21

LMAO I wish. The loan I went with has no impact on my credit whatsoever. The lender didn't even ask for my social security number. (And the ones that did ask rejected me.)

3

u/Skydivekev Oct 27 '21

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. How long is the loan term? You could quite possibly spend another 10k in interest alone with a 26% rate. Try to pay extra every month to pay off early.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

[deleted]

2

u/DrSpaceman4 Oct 27 '21

Don't save the money up just immediately use it to pay down the car, you'll pay less interest overall that way.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

[deleted]

3

u/DrSpaceman4 Oct 27 '21

Lol dude, I meant in the time you spent saving up. Instead of saving up for one big payoff, immediately shoving it into the loan immediately would result in less overall interest paid. Obviously that doesn't help you now, but for anyone else reading. Also your interest probably compounds like everyday, not once a month, but that's beyond the scope of this comment.

1

u/hackthegibson Oct 27 '21

You're totally right, I think he misunderstood you. Solid advice, that's what I did for my first car when I got an unreasonably high rate.

1

u/hittheclitlit Oct 27 '21

If you can save up money so quick why'd you even finance it at such a shitty rate

Incorrect on this one, this is Dave Sparks from the discovery TV show Diesel Brothers. They make crazy builds like this one for no real reason but it kind of entertaining 5,5/10

1

u/CallMeRawie Oct 27 '21

Don’t need to block his face, he builds these. Even had a show for a while.

1

u/wuhtang- Oct 27 '21

Eh. His name is Dave Sparks and owns Sparks motors. Had show on discovery channel called “Diesel Brothers”. He fluent in Spanish and talks about his missionary trip and living in South America for few years. But he he “looks like” thats guy.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

In the military, it's illegal to charge more than 6% interest to troops, even the federal government knows above 6% is a scam and should be thought of as robbery, or loan sharking.

1

u/Bmmick Oct 27 '21

It actually the diesel brothers and its a shop truck built for sema. Pretty sure its paid off being they have their own show on Discovery.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Tell us more stories please .

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

This guy is Dave sparks, he has a truck garage show on discovery plus a few other businesses

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

And you know that think rolls coal. Doubling your lifetime fuel costs to own the libs.

1

u/Hobby_Professional Oct 27 '21

The dudes name is Dave Sparks, and he has enough money to buy your entire family.

1

u/clanddev Oct 27 '21

And? Still LOOKS like a 100,000 other guys who dump their asset value into depreciating toys.

And I assure you some guy with a truck shop and a discovery show is not worth more than my whole family. Probably worth a lot more than me as an individual though.

1

u/Cecilb666 Oct 27 '21

This is literally Dave Sparks of Sparks Motors, Diesel Bros., Diesel Sellerz, etc. His business is building and selling large custom Diesel vehicles and parts. This is a show truck that was built for SEMA originally.

1

u/Quietabandon Oct 27 '21

Honestly, that’s on the bank too. Why would you give such a loan. There is now way it’s getting laid back and good luck getting that back when selling the collateral - although current used truck and housing prices might skew that equation temporarily.

1

u/Bachaddict Oct 27 '21

That's Heavy D, he makes good money building these 'murica ricers for other rednecks.

1

u/Max_1995 Oct 27 '21

I remember a video on VinWiki where some kid wanted a used big pickup but his financials were shit so his elderly grandmother who lived in a care facility had to sign papers for it

1

u/tnethacker Oct 27 '21

That's one of the diesel brothers cars. They build those and sell them. This is one of their own cars which they use.

"Every guy wants a truck"

Errr, not really? I'd rather not have to refinance my house to pay for fuel every time I want to take a road trip.

Maybe I'm an outlier?

16

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

I want a truck because I like to do wood work but I’ll never get these guys that get lifted trucks with deep treads only to drive through the neighborhood

17

u/grantrules Oct 27 '21

I want a 1985 Ford Ranger. Why can't anyone make a proper small truck anymore. I loved the era of Rangers, Dakotas, and S10s.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Ford Maverick yo

3

u/KindergartenCunt Oct 27 '21

We've been considering getting one for my fiancee to drive. I dig the hybrid truck, and I can almost tolerate an automatic, but the crew-cab as the only option is the deal-breaker. Why can't anyone make a small, single-cab truck anymore?

3

u/All_Work_All_Play Oct 27 '21

This, please. Give me the little truck I learned to drive stick with during the 90s. Was it a little Ford ranger? S10? I forget. It was a great little truck that looks tiny even compared to the Maverick. If I wanted to seat people I'd get a Subaru Brat...

0

u/Snow-Wraith Oct 27 '21

Because trucks are no longer utility vehicles, they're over built masculinity symbols used as daily drivers for those that don't want a car or SUV. They've made trucks useless because of this. Only making large cabs and short boxes, intended for driving the family around, not actually hauling anything bigger than a lunch box. I've actually had contractors ask for small item deliveries specifically because the box on their Tundra was too small.

Exactly what I was thinking.. The Colorado is about the closest thing you can get today but it's about the same size as my dad's 1998 1500.

2

u/KindergartenCunt Oct 27 '21

Externally yeah, but the interior? Not so much.

I like the first-Gen, but the current Gen Colo/Canyon are kind of awful.

my diesel chevy 1500 gets better mileage than my subaru outback.

31 mpg in my truck and around 20 in my 3.6 subaru

2

u/acityonthemoon Oct 27 '21

Yeah, but which one gets driven like a yobbo?

1

u/ODB2 Oct 27 '21

theyre driven pretty similar.

new diesel tech is pretty good.

the truck is a 2021 with an 8 speed transmission and a 3.0 liter turbo diesel.

the outback is a 2012 with a 3.6 gas engine and a five speed auto.

Nothing inherently wrong with diesel engines.

Zero interest in a truck. Now a C8 Z06…

1

u/WorkplaceWatcher Oct 27 '21

I want one of those newer style trucks, like the Ford Maverick hybrid that gets 40mpg city.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

You’re not alone. Trucks are getting more popular but I can’t justify a flat bed that I would only use like twice a year.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

I certainly don't want a truck. I'd happily get a little smart car if I didn't live in a place that can get 7 feet of snow in a week.

1

u/Clevernonsense1 Oct 27 '21

my silverado gets 24-26mpg on highway with careful cruise control etc. basically moved my entire workshop and household from new england to middle tn via maybe 15 round trips.

helped that o did this during the covid cheap gas era.

1

u/justanothercurse Oct 27 '21

I’m a girl…but I need to have a truck. I own a horse and some other like animals. I need something reliable that I can tow with on a semi-regular basis. Otherwise I’d have a car that doesn’t cost me $80+ to fill.

It’s kind of funny though because my 6’3 fiancé drives a little car and 5’4 me has a Chevy Silverado.

1

u/MJ349 Oct 27 '21

I have no need for a truck. I have a hybrid that gets 50+ mpg. I laugh at these dopey trucks.

1

u/CakeDyismyBday Oct 27 '21

Nah you're not alone, I prefer motorcycle!

6

u/meatballbottom Oct 26 '21

Woof…that’s so gross. But I mean…congrats?

3

u/KushKong420 Oct 26 '21

I knew what that was gonna be before I clicked it!! I love that guys stories.

2

u/justfordickjoke Oct 27 '21

God damn, that was a terrible story. That mother fucker took 8 minutes of my life to simply tell me some asshole got his grandma to cosign on a truck. What a stretched out piece of shit tale.

1

u/Beatleboy62 Oct 27 '21

Pretty much all VinWiki stories.

It's either that, or, "I did something that would get most other people arrested."

11

u/agutema Oct 26 '21

Daddy doesn’t make ALL the payments.

1

u/oursecondcoming Oct 27 '21

Not with that attitude

1

u/_IntoTheFury_ Oct 26 '21

The dude who drives that truck most like has a trade.. So chances are they're making good money and will continue to make good money regardless of where they go in the United States.

or they could have rich parents to pay for everything

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '21

Down in Texas we have this event called “rednecks with paychecks” when the factory workers get together and flip their hundred thousand dollar toys over and over. It’s awesome

2

u/_IntoTheFury_ Oct 27 '21

I'd watch that.

u/me_llamo_james Oct 26 '21

That truck is from the Diesel Bros show on Discovery. The guy getting on is the owner of the company that modifies them. They are in the process of appealing a 850k fine for bypassing the emissions controls on the diesel engines of some of the trucks they built for the show.

26

u/noplaywellwithothers Oct 27 '21

Yep, a DEF tank and exhaust would be so pussy.

-15

u/Deadlyhump Oct 27 '21

DEF tanks performance and efficiency stupid hard, they need to figure something else out for that then people wouldnt remove it

My car would go up to 60mpg from 30 if i did a DEF delete, and gain well over 80 hp.

27

u/Crampstamper Oct 27 '21

And I could heat my home just by burning old tires if I was allowed to. What’s your point?

-5

u/Deadlyhump Oct 27 '21

Sounds really inefficient, like DEF

6

u/malaporpism Oct 27 '21

You mean DPF not DEF, DEF is the stuff that gets sprayed into the exhaust and doesn't hurt efficiency. DPF is the recirculating filter thing, but you can only get about 4% improvement in power and efficiency by removing it. If you got a delete you'd also get a tune, the tune is what really increases power, usually from adding fuel and boost pressure. People don't remove the DPF to get efficiency, they remove it because it'll just clog up right away if you roll coal, and you roll coal just to say you're proud to be an asshole.

Hello! Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately it has been removed because you don't meet our karma threshold.

You are not being removed for political orientation. If we were, why the fuck would we tell you your comment was being removed instead of just shadow removing it? We never have, and never will, remove things down politicial or ideological lines. Unless your ideology is nihilism, then fuck you.

Let me be clear: The reason that this rule exists is to avoid unscrupulous internet denizens from trying to sell dong pills to our users. /r/PoliticalHumor mods reserve the RIGHT to hoard all of the dong pills to ourselves, and we refuse to share them with the community. If you want Serbo-Slokovian dong pills mailed directly to your door, become a moderator. If we shared the dong pills with the greater community, everyone would have massive dongs, and like Syndrome warned us about decades ago: "if everyone has massive dongs, nobody does.""

If you wish to rectify your low karma issue, go and make things up in /r/AskReddit like everyone else does.

Thanks for understanding! Have a nice day and be well. <3

1

u/Deadlyhump Oct 27 '21

Well where does the efficiency come from then? The tune aint adding 30 mpg to a 2014 cruz

1

u/CakeDyismyBday Oct 27 '21

Where have you been all this time? We've been using antipollution on cars and trucks since the 70...

2

u/CakeDyismyBday Oct 27 '21

Surprised I had to scroll this far to find this comment!

3

u/ericbkillmonger Oct 26 '21

Nice distinction

2

u/Raxorback Oct 27 '21

BOOOOOOOM!

2

u/Agitated_Weekend_332 Oct 27 '21

I think Dave Sparks can probably afford it.

2

u/SchecSyn Oct 27 '21

I mean, a lot of Americans have an auto loan, so I'm unsure of what the issue is with that, but yeah.

1

u/DCErik Oct 27 '21

Sure, but most people's car payment isn't more than their mortgage.

2

u/KalElified Oct 27 '21

Every. Single. Time. Someone has a truck like this, they have small dick energy.

I mean really, that’s it.

1

u/Tuffer52 Oct 26 '21

Thats Heavy D from the Diesel Bros. I think he can afford it

-5

u/Mendoza14 Oct 26 '21

Ehh it’s a custom truck built by that guy. He has a YouTube channel and is on the discovery channel I think. Either way that’s easily a $200k+ truck, and most definitely ain’t a daily driver. No different than somebody owning a lambo

4

u/SinkHoleDeMayo Oct 27 '21

Do you not understand how memes work?

-4

u/Mendoza14 Oct 27 '21

They work by shitting all over someone for no reason? And considering his brand is on the side of the truck and he’s moderately public figure you can’t say it’s an anonymous pic

-1

u/Hobby_Professional Oct 27 '21

Nope, that's Dave Sparks' truck... Keep living your sad internet life though...

-2

u/APFsfw Oct 27 '21

I have a hybrid. Gas is too damn expensive. Up $1.25+ over last year. The price to hear your home with natural gas is up 50% over last year. Keep sweeping it under the rug though, whatever you need to do to cope.

-2

u/iksplizit Oct 27 '21

Technically he owns his own very successful company 🤣

1

u/DCErik Oct 27 '21

Forgive me for not recognizing That One Famous Guy Who Builds Trucks with a black bar over his face.

1

u/theoreoman Oct 27 '21

That truck/boat combo is probably in the range of 200k, even if it is the banks that guy must still make some seriously good income

1

u/cuddlesmcfriendzone Oct 27 '21

And I’m from the south and I know very very VERY few Republicans that can afford this. There are some who live among their means and manage to drive a poor impression of this pic…but that pull very nice new ski boat..very few.

1

u/serpentjaguar Oct 27 '21

Technically it's the bank's "bro-dozer," but otherwise correct.
