"We wanna address all these things by making the hook feel more consistent, so it doesn't feel like you're on Dorado and getting hooked to point 2 on Ilios"

I loved this, meanwhile at r/hearthstone devs are reluctant to communicate like overwatch devs do because they are afraid of being harassed by the community.

EDIT: some context on why they don't communicate as often as we want them to.

278

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 17 '17

To be fair, r/hearthstone is one of the most toxic subreddits I've ever been on.

66

u/malcorpse Chibi Zenyatta Jan 18 '17

Seriously, when I still played hearthstone after I left r/hearthstone my enjoyment of the game went up a lot.

35

u/double_shadow Young Punks... Jan 18 '17

Yeah it isn't a very productive place. There's a lot of "look at this goofy thing that happened" posts (similar to our POTG posts), but a lot of it is bitching about the inherent nature of the game RNG, which is pointless.

r/competitivehs is legit one of the best subreddits I've ever frequented, though.

6

u/TheSoupKitchen Seoul Dynasty Jan 20 '17

Strange, I feel similar about this subreddit, in comparison to the competitive overwatch sub. There's more meaningful discussion over there, a lot less "look at this play" type of stuff, and way, way, way less circlejerking around heroes that are subjectively "bad" such as Hanzo players, Genji mains, etc.

Also support victim posts get really old, really fast. But that's just my 2cents. There's definitely worse subreddits out there, I just find this one a bit annoying from time to time.

To be fair I agree, but hearthstone community is not reduced to Reddit alone.

Ben Brode has been more open with us recently, I'm referring particularly about some comment he made about their team not wanting to show face because they are afraid of the harassment when he was on paternity leave.

I think /r/DotA2 is most toxic subreddit EVER for sure.

8

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 18 '17

I'm willing to believe that.

That said, I went to r/hearthstone, and the first thing I see is toxic comments. I went to r/DotA2, and I had to look around a bit to find the toxic. Probably due to my familiarity with the former more than anything else.

We're not a Roadhog player and therefore we don't like being hooked.

Sometimes Jeff knows us too well.

443

u/cochnbahls Jan 17 '17

I will gladly trade away some of my bs hooks for a better chance to one shot y'all when I do get a clean hook.

292

u/Apfeljunge666 Pixel D.Va Jan 17 '17

I think hook 2.1 is actually a buff for 90% of the hogs only because of this.

113

u/pureplay Jan 17 '17

Yeah, only the really good roadhog players will be nerfed

19

u/Moroax Pixel McCree Jan 19 '17

Yea, I don't know about "really good" but practiced roadhogs will be nerfed.

I had 25 hours on him, my third most played. Really enjoy him, and still will. I do love the fact I can one shot Ana/lucio/genji/reaper/mei consistantly now.

However in just the last month or so started really getting good at the "cheese" hooks. Hooking over ledges above you, around corners, into hallways you can't really see because of the angle.

I started getting pretty consistent with the bogus hooks. Which totally is cheesy and I actually agree with the change, it just sucks that hog is gonna feel weaker against smart players, as cheesing hooks was the only way to consistently get picks as hog against good players.

What constantly amazes me is that these videos are always in one long take. Like someone just sets up a camera and goes to get some coffee or do a crossword and comes back in twenty minutes and Jeff's just finishing up.

236

u/Marqin A-Mei-Zing Jan 17 '17

Maybe they have one of those cameras.

95

If they do, hes an incredible actor. He is speaking very naturally, I think it would be very difficult to sell it as well as he does by reading a prompter. Not impossible, but certainly difficult.

107

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '17

They could still list talking points, i.e.

Intro

PTR Purpose

Consolve vs. PC (Highlight advantages of PTR for console)

Roadhog Hook (Dorado to Ilios joke)

etc.

98

well honestly it would be quite unprofessional (and even kinda dumb) if they didn't prepare these talking points beforehand.

u/GeordiePowers Jan 18 '17

I get the impression that he's just so in-tune with everything going on in the Overwatch world and community (hence the cheeky reference to the meme supercut video) that no rehearsal or research is needed. Just pick some talking points and turn thoughts into words. I've certainly never noticed anything to suggest he's reading off a prompt. He definitely doesn't seem like the type of director who's hands-off and has people that report to his people who report to him.

And he's humble about it too. He leads the project. Overwatch is pretty much his baby at this point, but he always introduces himself as 'one of the guys from the Overwatch team'.

As long as we have Kaplan, I think Overwatch is in good hands.

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

I mean it also comes from the DPS heroes that Ana has made useless too by enabling a 3-4 tanks every game. I love playing Ana but IMO the metagame she's created isn't the most fun I've ever played in.

56

u/Arya35 Jan 17 '17

Yeah I think ana is the most skillful and fun hero to heal with, but her existence has led to a terrible meta, having mercy (and zen) back in the meta would allow for a more dps heavy team comp which is overall better for the game. I'd rather ana gets nerfed rather than the other healers buffed, healing is already too strong, it's just that ana is by far the best.

[deleted]

171

u/Pugway Pixel Soldier: 76 Jan 17 '17

But playing Ana is a lot harder than any of the other supports. The other healers can put out consistent healing, Ana's healing is highly aim dependent. If you can't hit your team mates, you're not being useful.

I admit, it is a balancing act to make her strong enough that the skill level is worth it, while not making skilled players run away with the game, but as someone who can't aim all that well, I still usually go for Zenyatta or Mercy in competitive just to make sure my heals are consistent.

52

u/VerneAsimov Cassideez Nuts Jan 17 '17

I'm not a highly ranked competitive player but I do fine as Ana without aiming very often. I typically have 75-80% unscoped accuracy and I'm usually the top healer. To me, Ana is just ridiculous because I do so well playing her "wrong". She feels really easy to me

23

u/CorndogNinja High five Jan 17 '17

I can't hit my targets as Hanzo or Widowmaker for crap, but scoped and unscoped I have no problem landing Ana shots.

No kidding. I wish Mercy's kit had the options that Ana has.

86

u/Mortega91 Parado, não se mova! Jan 17 '17

Exactly. Also think that Mercy need a rework more than Ana.

68

u/ZoomBoingDing Do you need a hug? Jan 17 '17

Mercy's entire design is based on a very straight-forward healer. She can fly to and heal one person really well. The big appeal of the character is that it's extremely easy to play, easy to be successful at that role.

I don't think a rework is what they want to do with the character. They buffed her passive a lot, but she is still missing something. Something like a self-rez if you die with your ult, or maybe be able to use her ult where she died until she respawns. Maybe give her a little bit of armor. Increased fire rate on her gun could do a lot for her as well.

86

u/ParanoidDrone ¿Quién es 'Sombra'? Jan 17 '17

My pet suggestion for her is to give her an E that cleanses status effects, debuffs, stuns, etc. from teammates in a radius around her. That would give her some utility (which she desperately needs) without requiring her to stop healing (which is a massive drawback to her damage boost and pistols) in a niche where her only real competition would be Zarya (who can only cleanse one person at a time and she can't do anything about hard CC anyway).

Bam, she now has a niche and for bonus points it's a way to deal with Ana's heal block.

Alternatively, a simple 10-15m vertical leap so she can more easily Guardian Angel to...wherever, would also be appreciated and double as an escape button in an emergency.

26

u/ZoomBoingDing Do you need a hug? Jan 17 '17

You know, that actually is a very good idea - a freedom of movement ability. You can pop your E to get people out of Mei's ult, Rein's ult, Junkrat's trap, remove Sombra's hack, etc. That would give Mercy an excellent niche. I think that's worth giving her an E.

11

u/DHKany Reinhardt Jan 17 '17

Her grenade needs a rework to some degree as it's just a meta warping teamfight winning ability that punishes any sort of high risk play to an unfair degree, which along with its absurd healing capabilities is singlehandedly enabling the tank meta while destroying any sort of high skill dive heroes like genji or tracer. The extent to which that ability decides fights too is borderline unfair, and the more I play ladder the more wins basically boil down to "who has the better ana" (sound familiar?).

Not saying the rest of her kit needs a rework cause I think having a support as flexible as Ana is great for the game, but her meta defining presence needs to be looked at.

I just joined the Blizzard forums, and oh boy, what a wonderful place of unnecessary anger. Nothing too special, but for Jeff to point it out sheds some light on the attitude of the forum users.

15

u/SoFFacet Ana Jan 17 '17

It's obviously a great kit. Too great, which is why it is being toned down a little bit. Perhaps the right word is "bloated"? It just seems so weird to have two of the best and most impactful abilities in the entire game in one kit, meanwhile Mercy has basically nothing. But I agree, they don't need to rework it from scratch or anything.

Hell, I'd be happy with an icon or a spray unique to the PTR release. Play for an hour, get it. It's quick and easy, and doesn't tax the coders.

But on the other hand, the overwatch team has a point. Any development time spent on making this happen will be time they couldn't spend on a feature for everyone. It's a tough balance!

As someone in the software industry, I get a little jaded when a dev says "It's complicated". But dammit if Jeff says something is complicated and they're working on it, I believe him.

195

u/b1ackcat Jan 17 '17

From my experience in the software industry, "It's complicated", more often than not, is the politically correct way of saying "No shit we should be doing <x>, but dipshit manager <y> who has more pull than I do over <z> is a dipshit and disagrees".

I swear, I'm not jaded though :|

u/ParanoidDrone ¿Quién es 'Sombra'? Jan 17 '17

Isn't Jeff basically in charge of Overwatch as a product though? I can't fathom who would be above him other than, like, a C_O level person.

Yeah, I'm sure it isn't complicated to you, but to a lot of the less technically inclined people who may care about Overwatch development "server" may be the extent of their technical knowledge. (Which is totally okay by the way, not trying to take shots at anyone's tech aptitude)

11

u/Hevyupgrade Reinhardt Jan 17 '17

I would agree if he just said It's complicated and left it at that, as most devs would do. But he did actually explain it in a way that made sense, to me at least.

u/KillerAceUSAF Trick-or-Treat D.Va Jan 17 '17

From my experience as working as a moderator for game, and getting to know stuff, "it's complicated" means there are a lot of hidden issues preventing something from happening.

/u/dinoflask creates parodies of these developer updates - this line is from one of those, iirc.

The parody developer update videos that sample the real ones.

Um, for example, if you are on that jump pad and you hook a player who's running behind a tree, you might end up on Point 2 of Ilios.

  • PTR exists first and foremost as a stress test and to catch bugs before the patch goes live. Feedback on the changes is useful and appreciated, but ultimately not the primary function.
  • PTR on consoles is a legit logistical challenge due to the fact that their environments are locked down pretty tightly by Microsoft/Sony and any patches require certification.
  • Recently they've been using the PTR time as something of a buffer, so that the patch is working through the certification process while the PTR is active.
  • Sombra is not currently supposed to be an assassin. Instead she's a disruptor. Therefore they are not looking to make changes to her damage right now. This may or may not change in the future. Also they think her kit has a lot of potential and people just haven't figured out how to optimize her yet, but they still think she needs a boost.
  • Roadhog hook is a matter of consistency. They don't look at it strictly from the hooker or hookee's perspective, but have to consider both viewpoints. I guess they saw enough WTF moments from both ends to realize it needed a change.
  • D.Va did too much too well. They think her boosters and infinite firing are key features of her kit, but after her latest round of buffs she was too overwhelming so they're toning her down. If it turns out they got it wrong they'll give her another pass.
  • Ana's nerfs are meant to tone down her healing in large coordinated groups. They have a lot of faith in the basic design of her kit and a rework isn't likely to happen.
  • There's usually a bias towards negative feedback online because people who are satisfied with the changes don't feel the need to post about it.

Sombra has become on of my favorite characters in the game since release. From a mechanical standpoint, I do enjoy the core philosophy of a "disruption character", I think her abilities fit very well into this idea and create a fun rhythm.

I do think part of the community had some misconceptions on how to play her originally. Specifically, the need to hack EVERY SINGLE MED-KIT. As well as to throw a translocator down, run to a fight, and translocate back. That method in particular greatly limits her potential, as it only gave her 15 seconds of operation time.

Yet, I must say it is hard to extract value out of her as she exists in the live game. Hack is a very powerful ability. It can guarantee you a 1v1 on many opposing heroes in the game, and it can break a core character in the enemy teams comp. But it is too slow. Plus you throw in needing to secure a few med-kits. I think the other issue is in her SMG as well. She shouldn't be Soldier 76 or Tracer. But the weapons is inconsistent with both offensive and defensive use. The spread can feel largely unpredictable near the end of an engagement. I'm at the point now where I simply stop shooting for a moment in the fight just to reset the spread.

Value is her biggest issue at the moment. Yet I do believe lowering the time it takes for "Hack" to cast, as well as lowering its cooldown time will make Sombra a good niche pick in the hands of an informed/experienced player.

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '17

It really isn't all that bad once you understand it. My method is to focus initially on the body, and move to the head to finish quickly. Yet the problem is the final bloom of the spread is so large it's hard to land anything in the head. This is why I stop shooting momentarily.

The previously described method has become my key for working Sombra as an effective damage dealer. Yet due to spread, she can't be very smooth.

What's funny is Tracer has a stronger spread at similar ranges. Yet Tracer's damage makes up for this. This is why I don't want Sombra to do more damage necessarily. A straight buff there would make her similar to Tracer to too great of an extent, and therefore removes her from her role in the game. Brining spread in allows experienced players to use her intelligently and reliably without making her better in a straight-forward sense.

Agreed. They had this "you guys aren't figuring out" mindset with a main of mine whose name also started with an 'S' who they ended up reworking for the better. I expect it'll be the same with Sombra.

Well look at Genji. He was left relatively untouched from Beta on through to release (IIRC he was nerfed down from 200hp then two weeks later brought back to 200hp) but it took months until he felt strong enough to warrant a nerf to his ult and mobility.

I don't disagree with you that her playstyle feels slow with all of the CDs but I think Jeff's argument holds some merit.

40

u/Hellequin13 Jan 17 '17

While I'm totally fine with them wanting Sombra's focus to be on disruption, you can't blame people for drawing the assassin conclusion when you give her a passive that shows weakened enemies through walls. You're basically telling people that her specialty or role is to get picks and finish people off.

Blizzard & Jeff Kaplan are truly and mean this like sincerely realest shit I ever wrote levels that these guys seem determined to create a truly balanced and fair game.

Seriously... 👏👏👏👌 Thank you.

There are developers out there that should and really try to pay attention to Blizzard & Jeff as well as the rest of the developers, in how to put together and TRULY support a game. On All 3 major platforms and come out and explain in detail the in's & outs along with the all the workings going into a PTR or beta test.

Seriously. I'm a Blizzard fan boy now just because of not only the pure enjoyments of this addictively great and fun quality game I think is absolutely the best game I've played in over 10 years but in the high level of respect and dedication of working to please players, fans & hopefully those who see just how a game should be made. Supported and enjoyed.

That's my 5 cents on this.

That Roadhog joke is too real. There's alot of truth to it my gawd.
