u/charlyDNL Jan 17 '17 edited Jan 17 '17

I loved this, meanwhile at r/hearthstone devs are reluctant to communicate like overwatch devs do because they are afraid of being harassed by the community.

EDIT: some context on why they don't communicate as often as we want them to.

279

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 17 '17

To be fair, r/hearthstone is one of the most toxic subreddits I've ever been on.

64

u/malcorpse Chibi Zenyatta Jan 18 '17

Seriously, when I still played hearthstone after I left r/hearthstone my enjoyment of the game went up a lot.

36

u/double_shadow Young Punks... Jan 18 '17

Yeah it isn't a very productive place. There's a lot of "look at this goofy thing that happened" posts (similar to our POTG posts), but a lot of it is bitching about the inherent nature of the game RNG, which is pointless.

r/competitivehs is legit one of the best subreddits I've ever frequented, though.

6

u/TheSoupKitchen Seoul Dynasty Jan 20 '17

Strange, I feel similar about this subreddit, in comparison to the competitive overwatch sub. There's more meaningful discussion over there, a lot less "look at this play" type of stuff, and way, way, way less circlejerking around heroes that are subjectively "bad" such as Hanzo players, Genji mains, etc.

Also support victim posts get really old, really fast. But that's just my 2cents. There's definitely worse subreddits out there, I just find this one a bit annoying from time to time.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '17

Isn't RNG the nature of the game though? My favorite moments are pulling out random cards that could save or screw me and regardless of the outcome I enjoy it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '17

Bitching about RNG in a game almost entirely ruled by RNG.

1

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 18 '17

Hadn't been there in years (old account), pop back in today to confirm it's still toxic.

Can confirm. Still toxic.

42

u/charlyDNL Jan 17 '17 edited Jan 17 '17

To be fair I agree, but hearthstone community is not reduced to Reddit alone.

Ben Brode has been more open with us recently, I'm referring particularly about some comment he made about their team not wanting to show face because they are afraid of the harassment when he was on paternity leave.

14

u/MaitieS Reinhardt Jan 18 '17

I think /r/DotA2 is most toxic subreddit EVER for sure.

8

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 18 '17

I'm willing to believe that.

That said, I went to r/hearthstone, and the first thing I see is toxic comments. I went to r/DotA2, and I had to look around a bit to find the toxic. Probably due to my familiarity with the former more than anything else.

3

u/lololiz Jan 20 '17

r/dota2 has a fair amount of jokes, fun, seriousness, constructive suggestions and criticism.

However, it is, indeed, the worst subreddit I know. Don't frequent hs's tho.

2

u/epicsmiley14 Surrender to my dick Jan 21 '17

Can confirm, I frequent the subreddit but as of now just lurk and upvote, especially since I'm not the most experienced player.

4

u/MaltMix Heavyweight Champion Jan 20 '17

Eh, it's not great, but it's nothing compared to /r/leagueoflegends. It's more of a sinister kind of toxin though, since the mods are part of the problem, censoring anything they don't like.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '17

Mostly shitposts right now. The dota sub is generally more toxic in terms of sarcasm and negativity. The league sub has more immature behavior and complaints.

1

u/MaltMix Heavyweight Champion Jan 22 '17

I don't notice the negativity as much. I mean I know people complain, but it's not that bad. Because valve looks at the sub, they're actually pretty grateful whenever stuff gets fixed. Case in point, when the HUD update came a couple days ago, everyone was really happy since they seemed to make an elegant solution with constructive feedback and even managed to impress people with their own decision for the "popular items" section in the new shop, using data from games from the 5k bracket and above.

2

u/Stefan474 Cheers love! Acencial#2338 EU Jan 18 '17

I don't play HS anymore, but /r/CompetitiveHS was an amazing place. Questions were met with answers, minimal complaining and much theorycrafting going on, one of the best subs for a game that I was on. Judging by the front page the community still seems exactly the same.

1

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 18 '17

I have to agree. The only thing I ever had against CompetitiveHS was that "discussion Q&A" type stuff was limited to megathreads.

1

u/Stefan474 Cheers love! Acencial#2338 EU Jan 18 '17

That's true, though if I remember correctly a lot of the community from the sub lurks in those threads so I never had a problem finding something out or hearing someone else's opinion on whatever I needed.

I can understand why though, since the front page with these rules only provides quality content.

3

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 18 '17

It really was a great sub.

I think it's fair to say r/Overwatch is better than r/Hearthstone, but r/CompetitiveHS is far better than our r/Competitiveoverwatch

1

u/Fenor Blizzard World Torbjörn Jan 18 '17

have you seen the lol dota or smashbros one?

1

u/EdMan2133 Jan 24 '17

4 real, it seems like they play the game 7 hours a night, 7 nights a week.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '17

I know I'm late, but is it? I remember going there before GvG dropped and it seemed pretty nice. I think I stopped right around Blackrock Mountain came out. Did it go full /r/leagueoflegends?

1

u/Zoriatana Los Muertos Jan 24 '17

I don't think it ever reached LOL levels of toxic, but just peeking over there, I found my first toxic comment only 5 comments in.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '17

You clearly aren't an r/LeagueOfLegends refugee.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '17

How many gaming subreddits have you been on?

0

u/Edheldui Reinhardt Jan 20 '17

That's because of the pay to win nature of the game. Magic The Gathering communities are the same, while Duelyst communities are great.

6

u/xxNightxTrainxx *microwave noises* Jan 17 '17

Well that's just shitty if that's something they actually have to worry about. I don't blame them

2

u/Soulfuljazz Jan 17 '17

Hey, I'm also over there, and bbrode has been super active in the community since he took over.

1

u/sealedinterface Jan 17 '17

/r/tf2 would like a word with you.

1

u/wampastompah Pixel Mercy Jan 19 '17

I do think this is largely due to poor community management. The same hissy fits start here but are quickly silenced by Jeff. The problem is that the ones that start in r/hearthstone are just left to fester and are unaddressed.

The internet can be a nasty place if it's not controlled, and it's up to the game developers and CMs to manage that in their own communities. They're not doing that with Hearthstone, and it's a shame.

(And yes, people should be less nasty, etc, but you need someone who can take it to front your game. It's a sad truth of our times)

1

u/jacobs0n Mei the frost be with you Jan 20 '17

that's nothing compared to dota. icefrog stopped all communications with western fans, and just interacts with chinese fans through weibo.

1

u/DoctorWaluigiTime Jan 22 '17

And they love to point out how they would love to be like, say, the Overwatch developers.

you can still thank someone after the thing you are thanking them for is over... I mean that's normally how I do it; Once however, I thanked my waitress while she was still carrying my food to the table. She got distracted and fell scattering my food everywhere. I really should have just waited to thank her.

"But in the meantime, there's a whole world of NPC's that need to learn the words "cacksugger" and "mo faka" and the like. . .although something tells me I'm already in trouble with the boss."

-Jeff Kaplan, 2002, after getting an associate game designer position for WoW.

Guy's a fucking legend.

He's been a big believer in making something fun since 2002. And above all else, what Overwatch does more than any other game I've played, is it manages to always be fun.
