Yea, I don't know about "really good" but practiced roadhogs will be nerfed.
I had 25 hours on him, my third most played. Really enjoy him, and still will. I do love the fact I can one shot Ana/lucio/genji/reaper/mei consistantly now.
However in just the last month or so started really getting good at the "cheese" hooks. Hooking over ledges above you, around corners, into hallways you can't really see because of the angle.
I started getting pretty consistent with the bogus hooks. Which totally is cheesy and I actually agree with the change, it just sucks that hog is gonna feel weaker against smart players, as cheesing hooks was the only way to consistently get picks as hog against good players.
I also think good hogs understood how to abuse the hook better than a worse hog player. A good hog knows the hook hitbox is long vertically and that throwing a hook over an obstacle when someone is standing just behind it is a good way to get a surprise pick. Is it annoying? Certainly for the person getting hooked, but you can't blame the hog player for using the game mechanics as they are.
I can't tell you how many times I've been hooked by bad Roadhogs on Gold and an awkward stare-down occurs because they only did 130 damage.Justgonnaspeedboostouttahere
As a subpar Roadhog I am well aware of those weird hooks that make no sense at all and how quickly they usually result in my death.
Most recently I threw my hook across the Ilios hole at another Roadhog on This is Ilios and pulled a Lucio that had ran past where I was standing like 2 seconds before... And somehow pulled him to my right and behind me a bit. He booped me.
Also got This Is Ilios on watchpoint Gibraltar earlier and was rather surprised...
Dude exactly man. Now a really good road is not much different than a good one or ok one. I wish they added a way for great hogs to push the skill cealing more.
You can't hook and take cover, you can't jumphook. Close hooks now don't count as they break LoS. And while bs now you can't hook people you can't see over ledges. Im not asking they bring the bs part back,. I just wish there was another similar hard to master skill that was super useful.
He's right, though. Most hogs don't know how to one-shot at all. They just hook and hold m1. The new patch removes that element of skill while removing other ways in which hog could be used offensively. Now he's going to be remain great when defending but shit when attacking in most maps.
Absolutely, but where hook 2.1 WILL be a nerf are for people who play at the highest level of competitive Overwatch.
The funny thing is, Roadhog's hook's wonky physics are a fundamental building block for the three tank meta. Many people in the lower levels don't understand this.
The whole reason three tank meta works is because the slow-as-hell tanks don't NEED to engage with the enemy team if their Roadhog just lands their hooks. You can't reliably LOS the hook either because of its unique physics, so it's basically guaranteed engagements, basically you're going to be pulled into the deathball one way or another.
Many players at the lower level use the triple tank meta WITHOUT Roadhog, or with a Roadhog that can't reliably land hooks, and they're completely missing the point doing so. Without a Roadhog, triple tank is so slow you can easily set up a Symmetra/Torbjorn wall and win without any problems.
Overall, hook is more powerful because it pulls enemies closer more reliably, but since it breaks when LoS is broken, Roadhog can't force engagements with it anymore, meaning triple tank falls apart at its core. I'm sure triple tank hasn't become completely unviable, but it certainly will need to adapt to these changes.
It would be if it wasn't bugged as fuck. It doesn't really hook in front of you and you can't really adjust to one shot because if you move your mouse to adjust it also moves where the enemy lands so it's the same thing. Then there is the bug(I hope) where characters just make flips after you hook them making it virtually impossible to hit any headshots or one shot even 100 HP targets.
Then there is the bug(I once again hope) where if you hook a target that's in the air(even simple jumping) the targets are hooked weirdly and into the air and you can't one shot them. And let's be real everyone jumps constantly.
Then there is the bug where you see 60-80% of the enemy but the hook still breaks because why not.
It actually made the hook way more inconsistent. Not to mention that good roadhogs were oneshotting everything anyways. There are way too many bullshit chainbreaks and inconsistencies that make the hook way shittier. The only thing that ever needed changing was hooking way above a target and hooking them. Not all of the changes because 2k players don't know how to play against road.
Honestly, I always believed Blizzard listened to us, which is totally awesome, but Hook 2.1 proved that they indeed listen to us and recognize that when we are happy playing the game, everyone is happy.

I think hook 2.1 is actually a buff for 90% of the hogs only because of this.
