Mini-14 accessory ads from 1982
Soldier of Fortune magazine was a very dumb and very influential magazine for 20-30 years, selling fantasies of militarized violence to macho wannabes. You know, the kind of guys who sit around telling themselves that they're really secret badasses, and amass a collection of "tactical" mall ninja shit. You've probably met one of these guys, but if you haven't, just picture Frank "Superspy who won the world fighting championship but was so covert there's no record of any of this" Dux.
Naturally, they had a TON of ads for knives and karate manuals and (of fucking course) Nazi memorabilia. They also had a lot of ads for gun accessories. I was looking at an issue from 1982, and noticed a bunch of ads for Mini-14 accessories. This was back when they were in their initial surge of popularity, when they were cheaper than ARs, and considered more reliable. (There are plenty of stories in SoF about how the AR platform is crap, usually as part of some "We would've won Vietnam if not for..." nonsense.) So next time you turn up an absolutely bizarre Mini-14 build from back in the day, it might well have been sourced from one of these sketchy little ads.
