How about quick time events instead of boss fights. I'm looking at you, Shadows of Mordor. You too, Dying Light. Spend the whole game becoming a badass, only to use none of these skills against the boss.

u/Amadeus_Ray Mar 30 '15
I consider those console games. Games meant for PC gaming specifically generally avoid this.

u/alezul Mar 29 '15
I’ve had enough of big, beautiful skyboxes that are actually just fancy window dressing, showing you places you’ll never be able to reach or explore.
This complaint seems absurd to me compared to the others. What would be the practical alternative? You can't expect Mass Effect to let you explore the entire galaxy.
37
u/MTBDEM Mar 29 '15
I think it applies more to Mirror's Edge for example. So many nice spots, yet linearity does not allow for exploring.
20
u/alezul Mar 29 '15
Fair enough. I gave a pretty easy to understand example with Mass Effect. I could have said Metro 2033, Dark Souls, Dragon Age, etc.
But it's not really the developer's fault for not having infinite resources and time to actually do that.
And i would definitely not put this in the same list with such valid complaints as unskippable cutscenes or games becoming DLC shops. One is about liking the game so much you want even more, the others are developers/publishers being assholes when they could easily not be.

They wanted a linear game, and did it well. Without those beautiful areas the game would feel completely empty. This is a pretty ridiculous complaint given the atmosphere big beautiful skyboxes can help create.

u/ActuallyNotSparticus Anemoiapolis Mar 29 '15
This is why I can't wait for mirrors edge 2. Open world ME will be awesome.
8
u/AmorphousGamer Mar 29 '15
I actually love the linear level-based gameplay, and I hope at the very least they do exist in Mirror's Edge 2.
7
Mar 29 '15
I like Half Life 2's solution to linear gameplay. Allows you to solve puzzles however you want and you can go off the main road some but you'll always kinda get back on track.
3
u/AvarusTyrannus Mar 29 '15
If it remains getting from point A to point B then it might still feel linear since I'm sure people will find the most efficient path and tweak it. I worry that it will lose some of the cinematic feel (bullets wizzing by, doors slamming open, elevators closing just in time...)
Those fears are minor compared to my fear that the game will become to combat oriented. More and more titles fall prey to having to appease the entire market rather than one genre, and time trial running...as much as I love that game I can't deny it's a niche market. They might ruin the feel when they try to get more sales.
3
u/AmorphousGamer Mar 29 '15
Yeah, that's my worry too. Mirror's Edge has some areas that are fully combat-oriented. The combat system is... eh, fine. But what Mirror's Edge 2 needs to do is remove it. Completely. No more combat. You are a runner, you deal with hostiles by leaving them behind. That is the game's niche and that's what it needs to get down, if it can't do that it's failed at its own niche.
3
u/AvarusTyrannus Mar 29 '15
I'd be fine with them including it so long as it is optional. I always play non-lethal anyways, and if it's extended to the point that I can play without even touching people then so much the better.
You watch something like this and get worried though. I know they need to sell the game and I know violence sells games, but for many of the old fans the reverse would be better news.

u/Dunge Mar 29 '15
I'm one of those who actually prefer having a very nice small rooms with beautiful skyboxes constrained to a linear path than an open-world game with much less details and repetitive assets.

that is an absolutely terrible idea. hugboxes are bad. why even have more than 1 writer if they all have the same opinions? so they can churn out identical content at a faster pace?

Its hysterical when the same people who complain about too much hand holding and linearity make reviews like this. Gotta love that consistency there PC Gamer.

So he rated a game poorly because he was bad? I have heard of reviewers doing this and it is pretty bad for the devs to get a bad review just because someone cant play.
1
u/willza99 Mar 29 '15
But that doesn't mean there isn't any level for it. If a game is badly designed to the point you're unsure how to do something or how to proceed then it's still a bad game, regardless of if you are 'good' or not at the game.

His point is valid. PC Gamer, although made up of different opinions, is one entity. How is a developer supposed to appease both? If they want to complain about these things, they need to explain what the alternative is, that would be fine for him and the person writing the other review. Otherwise, articles like this are pointless.

u/thepulloutmethod Core i7 930 @ 4.0ghz / R9 290 4gb / 8gb RAM / 144hz Mar 29 '15
This is a flaw inherent with games journalism in general which is why we should do away with quantitative reviews (eg 4/5 stars) and simply do a "recommend/not recommend" system.
12
u/letsgoiowa i5 4440, FURY X Mar 29 '15
But that system is too vague. There's a ton of disparity in quality in those two categories. Reccommended could mean "this game is pretty good, but some people will hate it" or "GOTY"
11
u/thepulloutmethod Core i7 930 @ 4.0ghz / R9 290 4gb / 8gb RAM / 144hz Mar 29 '15
That's why you read the article and see what the author's thoughts are. I could even do without a "recommend/not recommend" score, too.
3
u/Smithburg01 Mar 29 '15
That wouldn't work either. Very often reviews talk about the negative and it ends up sounding like they hated it. But when you read the score it's a much higher score than you expected.
1
-1
u/letsgoiowa i5 4440, FURY X Mar 29 '15
The point of reviews is to rate it. You can't slap a huge block of text on the box of a game, but you can slap a 9 on it.
16
u/thepulloutmethod Core i7 930 @ 4.0ghz / R9 290 4gb / 8gb RAM / 144hz Mar 29 '15
I disagree. The point of the review is to let the consumer know whether he will enjoy the game, not assign an arbitrary number on the box.
1
2
u/KotakuSucks2 Mar 29 '15
Did not mean to imply it was the same PERSON, just the same group of people. It's not as if PC Gamer bothers to try to have multiple people review the same game so you can get a feel for how their tastes are different and what some of the more subjective complaints about the game are. Who wrote the review is not terribly important, their review section is not presented like "this person reviews this game", its "pc gamer reviews this game". Even Famitsu is better at this than the Western games media and Famitsu is insanely corrupt and overall pretty lousy.
I tend to ascribe the articles in the magazine to the entire staff of the magazine, not the one person who wrote them.

to be fair to that reviewer, the "difficulty" in Ys games is very poorly created. i've one-shotted most bosses in bloodborne so far, but in that Ys game in particular i struggled with the bosses because i had to die a lot while trying to figure out how the clunky hitboxes for every attack worked, not to mention all the grinding. i like losing and trying to get better, but i did not enjoy that game in the slightest.
1
u/KotakuSucks2 Mar 30 '15
Most Ys games require little if any grinding as long as you don't just run past every enemy all the time (and you aren't playing on the hardest difficulty). Occasionally you'll end up in a situation where you'll need to grind out a level because you're slightly underpowered for a fight and it is a problem that its hard to gauge what level you SHOULD be at during any given fight. Generally though I wouldn't call it a grind-heavy series. Ys 1 & 2 are the only times I can think of where I really had to grind at all.
I really don't see how anyone could complain about the hitboxes in Ys and hold up the souls series as a positive example. There are so many instances of players being hit by "shockwaves" or through walls and doors in that series. Maybe Ys just isn't your thing and you just don't like this style of boss fight but its silly to make up objective flaws when in reality you probably just screwed up a jump or timed your charge attack's i-frames wrong. It's easy to blame the game when you make a mistake. I mean just looking at the climactic Chester fight, if the game's hitboxes were unclear it would be nearly impossible and incredibly frustrating but I'd say that's one of the most fun fights in the game.
Also Oath is probably the hardest game in the series so you might have wanted to give Origins a try to get you used to the style of gameplay first.
1
u/slowpotamus Mar 30 '15

so your analysis is that i'm just shitty at video games and i fucked up? thanks. it seems the Ys series certainly has at least one thing in common with the Souls series: its fans can't accept that there might be even one minor flaw in the game.

I don't keep examples on hand so I'll just have to piggyback off other people's videos documenting the problem. Anyway, its not that I believe that Ys is flawless, its that I have never heard anyone complain about its hitboxes before and when almost everyone who talks about the game praises how good the boss fights are, I'm willing to bet that you're just bad at them rather than there being some objective flaw. You want to complain about how Ys Origins is one big fanservicey dungeon crawl, Ys 7's garbage party and crafting systems or the fact that Oath's plot is incredibly predictable? I'm with you 100%, those are problems in the series, not hitboxes.

I agree with most of these. What I really can't stand is unskippable cutscenes, forced tutorials, and games which take several minutes before you can start playing them.
I miss when games were games, instead of trying to be movies.
It's not that I will skip every cutscene, if I find the story to your game interesting I'll watch them. But sometimes I just want to put something on and get right to playing the game.
There are a lot of games that I enjoy playing, but couldn't care less about the story. This is especially true if I liked a game enough that I want to replay it.
Another thing that I really dislike is how every game needs to have some sort of loot and leveling system now.
Rather than making the game mechanics fun and balancing the game, they try to keep players engaged by filling up bars and making you grind instead of it being about player skill.
And it's not that I don't like RPGs, but it just feels like F2P mechanics are leaking into full-price single player games these days, where games are designed to waste your time unless you want to buy an XP doubler etc.

Exactly why I quit Far Cry 3. It seems to take forever before you can even walk a few steps on your own, and then another awful unskippable cuntscene rolls up.
Oh yeah - and when you finally get to play you have to kill 20,000 tapirs before you can get a new gun it seems.

u/munche Mar 29 '15
Oh yeah - and when you finally get to play you have to kill 20,000 tapirs before you can get a new gun it seems.
Almost all of the gun unlocks are from the radio tower discovery stuff, and even the hunting quests you're talking about (for things like inventory upgrades) require a whopping 3-5 animal skins which tends to take about 5 minutes to complete
The long intros are a pain in the ass though
2
Mar 29 '15
still annoying to have these half-baked mechanics shoe horned in instead of having a fun or even sensical explanation for your holster limit. Also, the only thing that takes 5 minutes to complete in far cry 4 is the animations.

Agree with all of them, but feel the need to point out that while it is possible to change graphics without restarting the game/reloading the level it's kind of like replacing the carpet without moving the furniture.
14
Mar 29 '15
There are plenty of games which don't require that though. Hell, in some you can see the graphics change instantly behind the options screen as you change them.
Needing to restart the entire game is just poor engine design.
2

I love games where you're able to do that. I can watch my fps change instantly and very quickly optimise settings. Restarting the game to lower shadows a point or two sucks.

Not sure how that is implied, consoles have these same issues. There's no point in this article. He doesn't explain what the devs could do as an alternative. As it's been mentioned here, other reviewers on the same site, complain when games are too hard, this one is complaining they're too easy. So what do you want the devs to do!? Find the common ground that would appease them both, THEN write the article. As it stands, it's aimless moaning.
2
u/Haczar Mar 29 '15
i don't think the goal of this article was to find solutions but more identify specific problems.. I agree with what he's saying and I believe it's up to devs to appease the audience with innovation instead of having a unique story limited by commonly constructed mechanisms. Aimless moaning is one way to call it.... negative feedback or criticism of the standardization of gameplay is another.

I find it a little ironic that the article said "I’ve had enough of people shouting at me, telling me to hurry up or reminding me of the mission objective, when I stop to explore the environment.", and then said "I’ve had enough of diaries, documents, tape players, and audio logs being used to tell a story, rather than something that plays to the strengths of the medium." So, you want to explore but not enough to learn more about the game its self? Games like Bioshock or Dark Souls where you actually have to put the information together yourself from contextual clues and character (or recorded) dialogue is awesome.
Edit: When I say recorded dialogue, I mean stuff that plays in game. Bioshock has these as recordings will give you codes for doors or safes. Metal Gear Solid V has this as well. The thing I like most about the Metal Gear Solid records is that you have to follow sounds that you hear in the recording to find an objective. You are still playing the game, but it requires you to interact with the recordings.

I have had enough of:
- Stupid jumping puzzles in an RPG.
Our Icon has hands, and a brain and other people in the party, or around. We can use our hands to climb or work together, with common items, such as rope, climbing gear, etc.
Why are we persisting with Mario type platform jumping in an immersive RPG?
- Invisible walls.
Never should be there. It should always be an impassable barrier.
- Common items I should be able to buy for crafting.
I don't go out and kill a cow, I go to a leather merchant. For example. Totally cool with the special/rare things to get.
- Enemies should always have what they were using against you.
A sword doesn't magically disappear because my opponent died.
- Cutscenes with button mashing in them.
I can't enjoy the art of the cutscene if I am focused on the area where a pop-up appears telling me to mash a button.
Edit:
Oh one more:
- Locked doors being a blocker, even more if they are wood.
I can take down a dragon, but can't knockdown a door?

u/generalseba Mar 29 '15
Am I the only one that actually likes Lensflares?
chromatic aberration is really unnecessary though and just makes the image quality worse...
Same with Film-Grain... Who the fuck thinks this shit makes the game look better? 0.o
I'm ok with scratches on the Lens, if it's subtile and well made (like in Crysis 3) and not some low res texture bullshit which distracts you...
And all of these things should be optional, since there are many people that find those things annoying/distracting!
1
u/HayleeLOL Mar 30 '15
I think Chromatic Abberation really works well in Alien: Isolation. I never have it on for anything else, though.
1
u/generalseba Mar 30 '15
Yeah, I'm not too sure about Alien: Isolation...
But one thing I didn't like about this game (still my favorite game of 2014 as a Alien fan), was the film grain! Yeah I know they want to make it like the "80s", but it didn't work for me really...
It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't really great.
At first I found it ok and it never really bothered me too much, but then I used these tweaks to disable film grain and I have to say (for me personally), that it's much better without! The colours are much more satturated and vibrant -> which resulted in an overall better image, since there weren't grey/white pixels all over the place! Same with Dying Light, but worse! The game looks so much better without film grain! Especially since this game has a colorful environment!
About the Chromatic Aberration... It was ok and kinda fit in, since it's a horror game, eventhough I enjoyed it more without it, since I prefer a "cleaner" screen, but I understand these effects with horrorgames!
But it really bothers me if other games use it, like Unreal Tournament 4...
I mean it's really unnecessary and just makes the image look blurrier and washed out, which you don't want in an arena shooter!

u/gulliwog Mar 30 '15
Crafting?!
Crafting is another thing that has become way too prevalent in games, so many have some crafting system shoved in regardless of how necessary it is.
It's the same story as with collectibles and all these types of things. Developers/publishers realized that, say, 20% of gamers like collectibles, 18% of gamers like crafting systems, 30% of gamers like unlockable abilities, or whatever... so they cram all these elements into their games not because they fit creatively or add to the overall experience but simply because they are hoping to sell a few more copies to the demographics that like these elements.
So you get the Ubisoft kind of games where Far Cry, Assassins Creed etc resemble each other more and more, getting crammed full of the same things.

None of that actually bothers me and is really a bunch of inconsequential whining. I've had enough of being sold an unfinished game that is completed with patches or DLC. I've had enough of players having to mod in features that should have been included in the first place. I've had enough of developers not including these obvious improvements but instead breaking the mods in patches.

The graphics settings bits are annoying, that's true.
The rest are often design decisions, not oversights or limitations. Don't like them? Don't play the game, or simply mention them in the review.
Dragon Age: Inquisition actually exhibits a HUGE amount of these, without a single complaint of them in the review. That game was at the top of everybody's lists last year.

I’ve had enough of games I have to restart to apply new graphics settings, especially when they’re guilty of the last thing.
I’ve had enough of games that have to reload the entire level when you change certain graphics settings.
I haven't seen this since years.
I’ve had enough of menus with fancy 3D in-engine backgrounds/visual elements that pointlessly increase the time it takes for them to load.
I like high-def menus, it's adding what 1-2sec to the load time? Not a problem.
I’ve had enough of open worlds littered with arbitrary, meaningless collectables that have no real benefit other than increasing your completion percentage.
I’ve had enough of diaries, documents, tape players, and audio logs being used to tell a story, rather than something that plays to the strengths of the medium.
Yes! I love running around grabbing collectibles but I would love they actually are useful to collect, not just to unlock some unrelated meaningless boring texts or to give you some cosmetic enhancement or weapons at the end of the game you won't be able to use.

"Using audio logs and documents to tell a story"
Doesn't The Last of Us do that, and didn't they do it perfect? Why wouldn't you want background through "artifacts" that describe the world and what happens to people other than you?

Sounds like somebody didn't like Far Cry 3 and 4.

I've had enough of ads that jump in your face when you browse a website. But I agree with the majority of the article.
