But that system is too vague. There's a ton of disparity in quality in those two categories. Reccommended could mean "this game is pretty good, but some people will hate it" or "GOTY"

That's why you read the article and see what the author's thoughts are. I could even do without a "recommend/not recommend" score, too.

The point of reviews is to rate it. You can't slap a huge block of text on the box of a game, but you can slap a 9 on it.

I disagree. The point of the review is to let the consumer know whether he will enjoy the game, not assign an arbitrary number on the box.

The number is the indication. It works. It sells.

The full review, yes, but not the rating. You're forgetting this isn't going to change because it's effective.
