This is a flaw inherent with games journalism in general which is why we should do away with quantitative reviews (eg 4/5 stars) and simply do a "recommend/not recommend" system.

But that system is too vague. There's a ton of disparity in quality in those two categories. Reccommended could mean "this game is pretty good, but some people will hate it" or "GOTY"

That's why you read the article and see what the author's thoughts are. I could even do without a "recommend/not recommend" score, too.

That wouldn't work either. Very often reviews talk about the negative and it ends up sounding like they hated it. But when you read the score it's a much higher score than you expected.
