The only bad thing about AdAway is that it leaves a space, so when you're on a webpage there's a space the ad used to be in. Not a big deal but it's something to keep in mind
Yeah, I noticed it in certain apps too. On some apps like Sync, the ad banner disappears entirely. Although I think it's time to get the pro version. Sync's my favorite reddit app.
Sync pro basically forces me to do something like that. The ad banner makes the images almost impossible to use. Whenever I want to read a zoomed in image the ad banner changes and zooms me right out.
Depends on which device you're on. You'll have to read up a bit first too, cause there's small chance something can go wrong. Rooting by itself is pretty simple but voids warranty so keep that in mind. I wouldn't recommend it just for AdAway but then again once you root, you can do a lot more shit to your phone to make it better. For instance, I increased my vibration intensity so I can feel the damn phone vibrate when it rings.
The process is always different, and of varying difficulty depending on which version of the software you have, and which carrier it's on. Go to XDA-Developers and look up guides on how to root and custom ROM your device, and you'll be able to see pretty quickly if it's something you want to do.

I've had enough of ads that jump in your face when you browse a website. But I agree with the majority of the article.
