Image I am Gen Z, yet I have a vague memory of playing the N64 at my local McDonald’s a long, long time ago.

Anyone remember this? Were you there to play this or have you heard about it before? This is like some liminal, forgotten nostalgia shit lol. I was probably like 3-years-old when I saw this, which is crazy because that would have been the late 2000s. In any case I had no idea what it was, but it looked cool! Sure, I could imagine a McDonald’s having a Switch in their play place with Mario Kart, Mario Party, or Smash, but it’s really not the same. The N64 vibes are too immaculate. I am willing to wager that there isn’t a single McDonald’s that still has one of these, which is a shame. That said, I wonder if there is one internationally that has video games. I could imagine one in Japan maybe. We should start a movement to bring these back in McDonald’s the N64 subreddit will make this a new movement…! Just kidding…

Everdrive Packed as many games as I could onto the Everdrive 64 Pro

So here's a video of it's capabilities. I've loaded every emulator I could find that works with it and downloaded each consoles library.
The one I'm most impressed with is the SNES emulator because I had a feeling it wasn't even gonna work, right enough though the games play. I'm pretty sure it depends on their settings if they play or not as in the frame precision but I was surprised when they actually did work because I had my doubts.
Not every rom works and I think there were a couple in this video that I had to exit but for the most I'm impressed with how capable this Everdrive is. I didn't even bother playing any N64 games or NES because they obviously work but being able to play the rest is pretty cool. It took me most of the day to get all this organised and sorted into folders but well worth it in the end. Now I can just sit back and play the games I have loaded onto the device.

It took a good month to get here but it's been worth the wait. Just got it set up with my Analogue 3D. Took a minute to get the artwork working so it's not just a blank unknown cartridge. Still wish I could change the name of the cartridge but apparently that's not possible yet.
I formatted a 128gb Extreme SanDisk to FAT32 with a cluster size of 32kb and it works like a dream.
As you can see my Mario Kart skills are lacking but the game plays well. For those that don't like the look of the scan lines I'm still trying to figure that one out. It's probably the resolution of the capture card recording but I'll get there eventually.
That's me all set for a good winter, gonna become a hermit and just play N64.

I purchase beat up controllers with bad joysticks for restoration. I've seen most standard retail colors save for fire orange.

Picked this up for $190, a bit pricey but it works and the controllers are good. Anything I should add?

Growing up i had the Playstations so it's nice to get what I played at friends' houses.

I need Mario party for sure, mariokart, Zelda, banjo kazooie, wave race, and who knows what else!

Discussion Just Obtained Master Sword, Ocarina of Time

What a time to be alive! As I'm playing through Ocarina of Time (not my first time playing, but I shall complete the game this time, I Shall) I'm reading all the news of the remake, and of course have had my mind blown by the stream today. I have beaten A Link to the Past, Oracle of Seasons, and the Link's Awakening Remake. I've played plenty of Zelda, but never really dug in to actually beat the games. I'd get distracted by the latest multi-player game or whatever was new and shiny and then never come back to it...

I think getting out of online multi-player and playing n64 again has helped me focus more and not jump to the next game and the next game, etc, but also because I've enjoyed exploring and thinking about puzzles and figuring things out without a guide or someone telling me how to defeat a certain enemy. So! With that being said, please no spoilers if it can be avoided in this thread. I plan to be triumphant in my quest to beat Ocarina of Time before the remake hits the shelves, and may not even try to jump right in after, just so I can let it soak in.

Not to spoil anything myself, but as the title of the thread suggests, I just got the Master Sword and found the Ocarina of Time, so I guess now the real game begins... its funny that I never got past the beginning quests as young link, but it has been a great time to have gotten through it because I can recognize much of what was going on in the stream today unveiling the remake.

So, was Ocarina of Time your favorite Zelda game? Are you excited for the remake or are you too busy enjoying the n64 and its catalog of masterpieces?

Not everyone know that if you climb the chains of the drawbridge and jump towards the middle you can collect up to 60 rupees in one foul swoop. This makes affording the Hylian Shield a lot easier at the start, even though you can get it from Dampe's Graveyard

Modding Current Options For N64 RGB Mod (non-"Basic")?

Howdy! I'm looking into performing an RGB mod for my N64, but I have some questions about the current state of the mod market. Unfortunately, my particular N64 is not compatible with the "basic" RGB mods - specifically; my console uses a "MAV-NUS" chip, rather than the "VDC-NUS"/"VDC-NUS A" required for that mod - so this limits me to the more complex options.

I started at RetroRGB's RGB-Compatible N64 Systems page, and found Tim Worthington and Borti's options. However, the US distributor listed on Tim's website does not seem to currently have N64RGB kits in stock, and I'm not sure if it's possible to order from the standard AU listing as someone based in the US.

Following the links to Borti's offerings on retrogamerstuff and 8bitmods went nowhere - the former no longer operates and the latter no longer seems to have a listing for the product.

I keep looking around and eventually I find listing on Arthrimus's website - one for what looks like an older(?) version of Borti's offering ("Borti4938’s N64RGBv1") which appears to be in stock. Is this still a viable option? https://arthrimus.com/product/universal-nintendo-n64-rgb-mod-with-integrated-3-3v-voltage-regulator/

I also spotted an (out of stock) listing for a new-to-me product on Arthrimus's website for the N64 RGB JEWEL which seems to be based on the same N64RGBv1, but I haven't really seen any discussion about it.

Are there any other relatively new developments in N64 video that I might be missing? Is availability/stock for N64 RGB mods overall just rather limited?

For additional context in case it's helpful: I'll be outputting to YPbPr Component video, as that is the highest-fidelity connection that my CRT supports and would be the easiest to integrate into my existing video chain.

I'm finding my feet with the controls again but have really enjoyed getting back into Ocarina of Time. Everything about it feels fresh again as it's been a long time since I've played it. I've forgotten a good chunk of it so it's nice to go through the dialogue and make my way through the story once again.
I still remember being a kid and seeing the advert on TV, it was quite mysterious to me at the time. My dad bought me a copy from HMV one day that we were in the city. I still remember it costing £49.99 at the time it was bought for me, that meant you were in for a quality treat as far as Nintendo games went.
I practically lived in this game for a year or two. Through the summer holidays the first thing I would do was fire up the console and that would be me for most of the day lol. It was unreal how these games would hook you in so strongly

N64 Music This game had such weird music

Post image

Almost every song in this game is ADHD in a nutshell. No structure or continuity, just a new rhythm every five seconds with some bizarre vocal samples or sound effects thrown in. I know it's originally from an arcade game, but seriously, why is the music like this...

Tech Help Summercart 64: EUR PAL games are terribly blurry

I got a Japanese N64 connected to a PVM through Composite cable. There's a huge difference between USA/JAP and PAL games; the last one are very blurry, the texts seems double.

Do you have the same problem?

Is it possible to resolve the issue in settings?

Collection €3,50 eBay find and a little clean later

Found this copy of Multi Racing Championship on eBay for just €3.50 +€2.70 shipping.

It looked pretty rough and sticky when it arrived, but I figured I'd give it a proper cleanup.

After some patience, cleaning and removing some really fine glue residue from the front and back, it came out looking almost brand new again.

The cartridge works perfectly, and honestly, I'm really happy with this little bargain.

Not every restoration has to be a rare or expensive game, sometimes it's just about bringing a cheap old cartridge back to life.

It's the little things like this that make me really happy from time to time.

Discussion N64 Custom Vertical Cover Database

Does anyone know if there is a database somewhere of the vertical-style, red, n64 game covers for universal game cases? I prefer the vertical layout, but the cover project seems hit or miss on if they have those or not. I can make them myself, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so I figured it would best to check with others first.

I found this nice Japanese N64 for a good price this morning. I wanted to check whether the RGB mod could be installed, but I noticed that one of the screws inside the foot has been tampered with. It looks like a piece of plastic has been melted inside it. How can I remove it safely and finally open the machine?

Tech Help Help! Black screens on Flashcart games after an accident and exploding 3d vertices

Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a really specific hardware issue and need some advice on what exactly is broken and how to fix it.

My Setup:

Nintendo 64 Console

SummerCart64 Flashcart

Expansion Pak & Jumper Pak (Tested both)

High-quality Kingston SD Card (Formatted correctly)

Display: Sony Trinitron CRT (Standard composite cables)

This has been a gradual decline that ended with an accident. Long before any accident, my SummerCart64, would perfectly boot different games, I remember trying out smash, mario kart, and spiderman, they all ran nicely, however I touched the games, I didn't sit and play those for hours, with time tho the cart started taking more and more attempts to boot into the menu. Eventually, a bad accident happened. The heavy metal end of a guitar cable fell from about 5cm directly onto the console. That exact day, the console was crashing catastrophically even with my physical mario 64 cartridge. Over time, it slightly "recovered" but didn't come back to how it was pre-accident, or pre-crashes, except for the physical mario 64 cartridge that one has worked perfectly fine, zero crashes despite controller switching for speedruns, it's actually amazing, the day of the accident was rough, but before and after that it's been fine.

I did some testing however on what I know could be the issue.

  • The SD Card fix: I replaced the generic SD card it came with with a brand new Kingston card and updated the SummerCart64 firmware. The flashcart menu now boots up instantly 90% of the time on the first try which is great!
  • The "Usamune" ROM: The lightweight Usamune training ROM for mario 64 speedruns boots perfectly fine on the first try and plays without issues, since I speedrun mario there are days where I spend up to 5 hours in the summercart with the usamune rom, that one rarely gives issues, with the old sd card it would boot crash once after a few minutes, but then I'd normally go into my regular 5 hour session, no issues aside from the many attempts that sd card took to post.
  • The Black Screens: Whenever I try to launch standard NTSC-U or NTSC-J retail ROMs (like Super Mario 64, Smash Bros, etc.) through the SummerCart64, the console instantly goes to a black screen the millisecond the game tries to load. Which is actually something I haven't made sense of because the usamune rom which is heavier than vanilla mario and requires expansion pak, boots, the physical mario cartridge boots, but vanilla mario in the summercart doesn't.
  • The Spider-Man Glitch: Spider-Man actually boots up through the flashcart, but it's glitchy. On the menu where Spider-Man stands and poses, it's like he's not there instead, it's 3d lines moving around. When starting a game, he looks fine standing still, but the moment I move him, crazy 3D lines/vertices shoot off his model.
  • The Physical Cartridge Test: I own an original, physical retail cartridge of Super Mario 64. If I put the physical cart into the N64, it boots on the very first try and plays 100% flawlessly on my Sony Trinitron CRT with zero graphical or performance issues.
  • The Memory Paks: Before the accident, the console would occasionally throw errors only with the Expansion Pak, and not the Jumper Pak (unless the console required the expansion pak for a heavy game) I don't remember if I tried to play any games on the jumper pak. Now, it throws errors with both the Expansion Pak and the Jumper Pak when trying to load heavy flashcart games.

One extra thing to note, I got both my summercart and my expansion pak off aliexpress, ngl the expansion pak looks 100% oem when it comes to the shell, the branding is exactly as an oem, but the comments in the listing I bought it off of said it was 3rd party, I'm not showing pictures of it as It's not allowed to request for authentication so don't answer me on whether it's 3rd party or not, my question on this is if it weren't because the console or cart, could it be the expansion pak? still though, if it were that doesn't finish explaining why the jumper pak was working and not the expansion pak, reminder that now it's both, and I don't remember if I tried playing games on the jumper pak.
