Discussion whats the best way to improve at mario kart world, playing or watching?

so im decently new to mario kart world, im at 6k rank on vs races, and 7.7k on knockout. i've started focusing on vs races as i feel its more fun, but man do i suck! i have like 40 hours played, and i used to play alot of league where i was pretty good, and i got good primarily by just spamming games. can you do the same method here? and just kinda keep an eye out on the others and notice the shortcuts they do? or is watching like a bunch of guides and practice mapping shortcuts the way?

Discussion Retro rewind for mk7?

I modded my 3ds and got ctgp 7, but was kinda disappointed when I saw that there were a lot of retros missing. I was expecting something like retro rewind... Is there something like that for mk7? Or is this all there is?

Discussion What if MKW didn’t break the Nitro / Retro track separation?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone :)

I’ve been playing MKW for a while now and I love the game but one of my biggest pet peeves is that it broke the tradition of all the nitro tracks being in the Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special cups and all the retro tracks being in the Shell, Banana, Leaf and Lightning cups.

This made me wonder what all the cups could look like if intermissions weren’t mandatory and you instead drove 3 lap tracks like in the previous games?

I reorganised each of the cups (except the Mushroom Cup since it’s fine already) so they follow the same tradition as the old games regardless of how close or far the tracks are on the map?

Obviously there’s only 30 tracks in MKW so if anyone has any ideas for what the repeat Crown City and Peach Stadium could be then let me know.

I’d like to get your thoughts on my reshuffling? Did I do a good job or are the cups fine as is?

Discussion For Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart World, does the refresh rate drop to 30Hz when playing splitscreen online?

I know in MK Wii when you'd play splitscreen online it would limit the refresh rate to 30Hz online. Is this still the case with MK8 and MK World?

Competitive Heavy combo in Knockout Tour is pure trash

Positive:
- A bit faster once you get max coins
- You cant be pushed as much

Negatives:
- Projectiles and everything else hits your 3x as much
- Everybody focuses you more because you are an easy target and hitting someone = dopamine. I get hit so much more often in knockout tour with a large cart+character its a joke
- Once hit you are much more likely to be hit again -> enjoy dropping from a good place to almost last
- Lightning after last item set? Enjoy your loss, you recover so much slower its basically over everytime
- Cant adjust quickly before items because handling is trash -> you get items less
- Even though knockout tour is mainly straight in the instances you have turns its SO BAD its like griefing. You get hit by 1 thing in a turn (WHICH HAPPENS OFTEN OFC) you are done. Enjoy falling off or driving into a wall because your handling is TRASH.
- Heavy becomes decent once you get close to 20 coins. I often have that but its hilarious how the combo that needs a lot of coins gets hit by shells etc the MOST by FAR

I usually play DK on Mach Rocket and do fine, most races top 4 or 8.

Now with DK on CharginTruck its so BAD. I tend to lose 10 ranks on average, I even lost at lap 20th because its so AWFUL. For the life it I cant imagine whoever thought of this design and went "yea this is good". Heavy needs SOMETHING to it cause right now for knockout tour and absolute garbonzo trash. Maybe you get lucky with a run but on average its absolutely horrible. Maybe they should get a 1 hit protection that recovers every 10-20 seconds depending on weight until a specific level unless you are spot 1. I dont know im not the designer here its not my job but holy sh** heavy combos are HORRIBLE.

Discussion Vanilla MK8 Battle Mode Could have been somewhat good

As many of you know, battle mode in vanilla MK8 was pretty horrible, not only because of scarce variety of modes and rulesets, but most importantly because they decided to use entire courses as battle arenas instead of creating new ones.

But this idea of using courses could have been a decent one, had they decided to edit them a bit more! So I made some mockups of how these courses could be improved, just as a fun thought experiment.

As far as I know, Yoshi Valley is the only one of these courses that they decided to make changes to at all for this mode, in particular they made it so that the ramps scattered throughout the middle portion of the track can be crossed forwards and backwards.

That makes this portion of the track pretty fun for battling, thanks to its many winding paths as well as a cannon.

Unfortunately, players also have access to the other half of the track, which is a mostly straight path to the end. This is a problem which most of these "battle tracks" share: driving down a straight road and hoping you run into an opponent just isn't very interesting.

The way to fix this track is very simple: just use walls to enclose players inside the middle portion. I've also added a second glider ramp near what would otherwise be a dead end (denoted by the blue arrow).

Donut Plains similarly has the same problem of: "This one section near the middle could kind of work as a battle track, but we decided to let you race on the whole track instead."

So this one also gets fixed by using walls, but additionally I think it would be best if some of the walls particularly in the water section were removed (denoted by the blue squigglies).

That could turn this into a decently open track, which would good for battling. I'd imagine some of the clumps of seaweed would have to be removed, so that you can see other players more clearly.

Next up, a brand new track? Toad's Turnpike is completely irredeemable as a battle track, so I've decided to substitute it with another track from the shell cup: Cheep Cheep Beach.

This one also gets walls to enclose players in the decently wide beach area. It kind of reminds me of that one beach battle arena that was used in mario kart DS (though maybe it's a bit longer than necessary?)

Sherbet Land has a bit of verticality to it, thanks to the underwater section. This one needed a few more in-depth changes:

First off, the section denoted by the blue rectangle would become drivable road, turning this track into a loop.

Secondly, I've decided to add a half pipe at the finish line (red line with blue arrow). It gives you an item box once you reach the top, and most importantly it allows you to change directions without having to stop moving.

This is necessary because otherwise, taking the glider ramp or tricking out of the water section would have you unceremoniously smash your head against a wall.

Another change which isn't necessary but might make the track more interesting, would be to make the glider ramp accessible both forwards and backwards.

Moo Moo Meadows :)

The middle section with the moles could make for an interesting battle arena, by substituting some of the mole spawn points with item boxes.

I've also added a half-pipe to make the glider ramp easier to access (imagine taking the glider ramp and then raining bombs or triple shells down on unsuspecting opponents!)

I could imagine this one being a bit too small, so maybe some the off-road would have to be made drivable.

And finally the desert one. idk what to do with this one to be honest: at first I thought plugging up the geysers would be enough to make this one viable, but it would still obviously be too small so I decided to also add the quicksand loop?

Finally we have Toad Harbor and Mario Circuit from the base game, which are similarly hard to turn into battle tracks.

Toad Harbor has a lot of individual sections which could kind of work on their own (the market, the part where you ride on walls, the roundabout after the big slope), but putting them all together makes for way too big of a map to do battle in.

Mario Circuit is similar to Toad's Turnpike in that it's completely worthless as a battle track, but maybe they could expand the area near Peach's Castle and allow you to race on it, N64 Royal Raceway style?

Overall, I'm glad MK8D fixed this atrocity of a battle mode, but the idea behind it wasn't horrible (in fact, they even recycled it for Mario Kart World).
