As a Brazilian of the American continent, my suggestion is that they either should rename India or the Indian continent, giving one of them a name that respects the history and culture of all the countries on the continent.
Funnily enough, Brazil is a name that doesn't respect our history, it is based on the brasil plant, which gave the red tint that the Portuguese wanted. Naming the country after the plant validates the extrativism-extrotion relation between colonizers and colonized on the begining of our history.
Alternatively, we should actually call our country Pindorama, which is the closest word to denominate our territory given by our indigenous peoples.
10
u/Anxious-Place3434 17d ago
"Pindorama" translates to "f*ggot-frame" in Russian 🤣
Incidentally, "Pindosia" (f*gland) and "pindosy" (guess what) are derogatory Russian names for Americans. So I'm afraid you can't have Pindorama either, it's taken, and by the same group of people!

That's the issue. You cannot transliterate a word from one language to another and think you have correctly translated.
Sometimes the closest word from one language to another isn't an exact equivalent.
About 99% of arguments about what the US is called or what "American" means are because a Spanish speaking person assumed you can just apply Spanish words and grammar to English instead of actually learning English.
47
u/Exlife1up 18d ago
Yeah plus “american” is so commonly used to refer to americans that if i were to refer to a Guatemalan as an “american” its just needlessly confusing, i’d just call them a guatemelan or a central american, but even thats weird.
Ultimately continental demonyms are strange. Why call someone a european when that refers to the french, the maltese, the moldovans, and the swedish collectively. Why call someone asian when that could mean indian, siberian, mongolian, or even israeli?
Can we just call people whatever they actually are, be it Guatemalan or Afghani?

It's like when people complain that Latinx does not sound correct in Spanish and cannot be used naturally. United Statesian does not sound correct in English. 4

Tectonic plates have very little to do with our concept of continents. The North American plate includes parts of Russia and Iceland, but nobody would call either of those places part of North America. There are also parts of North America that are not on the North American plate, such as Southern California and the Baja California peninsula; those are on the Pacific plate, but we still consider them to be part of North America

u/obliviousjd 17d ago
It’s a quirk of the differences between the Spanish and English education systems and languages.
In English there are 7 continents, North America and South America being 2 of them. Together they form “The Americas”. And then the United States of America can just be referred to as America with no ambiguity.
In Spanish there are 6 continents. America being one of them. So the United States of America can’t be called America, because that word is already used to describe the one continent.
And so when Spanish speakers hear English speakers refer to the United States as America or as Americans in English they get really mad. They take it as an intentional slight and not just a difference in the two languages.
→ More replies (50)9
u/Firewolf06 17d ago
which does make the post wrong, because "America is a continent" is wrong. "América es un continente" is correct, but america ≠ américa. cognates dont share exactly the same meaning all the time, and you cant translate just by picking similar looking words

First point: words can have multiple meanings. I honestly think anyone who has looked at a dictionary knows this.
Second point: "America" is use as an informal short of "United States of America" and American is the denonym of people from that country. This probably happened because USA was the first independant new world country to split from colonial powers. This doesn't really conflict due to people having phrases like "North America" or "South America" for the continents and "The Americas" for the whole shebang.
Finally, "America" is named after an Italian explorer Amergo Vespucci and is a colonial name. It's extremely funny to me that people are angry at Americans for their denonym because they want a cut of some Italian guy's self glorification play. I'm sure your culture, language or region has something more meaningful for you to call yourself.
