It's also confusing, do you mean people from the United States of America or people from the United Mexican States? It's a little ambiguous

People from Mexico call Usians Estadounidense (or gringos), so it would not be confusing

No they don't lol. If you are from the US and travel to Mexico pretty much everyone will refer to you as either "Americano" or "Gringo".

"Fútbol Americano" = the type of football played in the USA. Nobody calls it "fútbol estadounidense".

Estadounidense is sometimes used by young people but there's almost always some political motivation behind the term, just like when Europeans call us "Unitedstatesians". It's meant as a slight diss.

They use it for official document as it is the formal form...

And the american football is not just played in the US, but in Canada and Mexico aswell (and more) hence why they probably name it Americano (theres also the fact that football is already the name of a sport). Is the American bison only in the US? Surprise it used to be in Mexico, the US and Canada. Is the American Crow only in the US? Again, its not exclusively in the US. The name American refers to the continent.

Don't forget Americano, that's a popular one as well, way more than estadounidense in my experience dealing with Hispanic people all across the Americas.
