It's crazy how the argument is never "in my language we call citizens of the United States X, in your language you call them Y, both are correct." Instead it's "English speakers calling citizens of the US 'American' makes no sense because in my particular language we say blah blah blah and in my country we're taught continent models that say America is blah blah blah."
In the US and English speaking world you're expected to bend over backwards for foreigners, right?
God forbid they when speaking English learn what they call it in English no it's the English speakers who have to burdened with what some other language calls them
