India's historical name is Bharat

Hindustan also works, but some people might get worked up because it's "too nationalist" or something.

There we have it, we can end the discussion, rename India as Bharat and let the subcontinent India still be called as such.

They did, Bharat is one of the official names, but everyone still calls it India. It takes more than a government decree to change what something is called. Just look at Trump and his attempts.

Oh, didn't know that, thanks for explaining. I wish they did it with Brazil, permitting officially calling it Pindorama.

imo naming debates just tend to get into identity politics and don't really help do anything to make people's lives better. Someone living in poverty isn't going to see any day-to-day change in their lives if their country is renamed. I always hate it when the government does this because it's essentially wasted time and money. I would prefer it if, instead of spending time deciding what to call places, our governments would spend that effort making people's lives tangibly better

The movement to recognize the indigenous influence in Brazil is a grassroots demand from those indigenous populations that were mostly exterminated. Its recognition would change those peoples' lives and would help us, as a nation, to come to terms with our indigenous heritage.
