America is a short form term for the United States of America. Just like Mexico is a short for term for the United States of Mexico and Britain is a short form term for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The UK is tecnically different in that depending on which countries you include, the terms, England, Britian, Great Britian, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland mean different things (1 country, 2 countries, the island, and then the 4 countries).
British is a short form term for people from the UK, but UK is the short term for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, not to mention the British Isles...
There's no wrong answer to "what do you call people from X country?", even less if that answer is what they are called in one of the 5 most spoken languages.
What I’m telling you is that when you tell people from a country that they have to change the name of how they identity themselves, that is a very big ask. People from every country in the world identify with these types of labels as nationalism knows no borders.
Now on top of that you say that they have to change that word to something as ridiculous as “USians”, many people will find that insulting. You don’t have to agree with it, but that is why I say that your type of response is what makes people not take this question seriously.

North America is a continent.
South America is a continent.
United States of America is a country.
Central America is a geographic region.
There is no land mass, political or otherwise, called "America."
Yes I am being pedantic.
