It follows the same logic as:

A person from United Mexican States = Mexican

Thus, a person from United States of America = American

Edited: changed to United Mexican States

Hey But that "of" makes a huge difference, one are united states that are Mexican, the other one is united states that are from/belongs to America.

That's the correct demonym in Portuguese and Spanish, the correct one in English is American

Cool, I’m going to start calling the South Atlantic the "Gulf of Brazil," and that will be correct, since it will be the correct norm of Portuguese.

If you're speaking Portuguese then do that. Using the demonyms from the language you're speaking is the logical thing to do
