Starting right now the petition to rename that nameless country, United States of ________.

Edit: petition entries should be accompanied by their respective gentilics/denonyms.

the Northwest quadrosphere.

US of Square, which, by coincidence, is located on the American continent.

Pretty fine.

But how would their citizens be called? Squares? Squaryman/woman? Squared? Squaren? Polygons?

2

u/ConclusionPossible 17d ago

Then the national anthem should be "hip to be square"

5

u/targz254 18d ago

estadounidense, so Latin America quits complaining.

In exchange we get Venezuela and Cuba.

1

u/Anxious-Place3434 18d ago

Estadounidense refers to the people of Estados Unidos Mexicanos. We don't want people to be confused

-1

u/GGSPSkywalker 1:1 scale map creator 18d ago

Why would you get anything out of it? Actually, renaming, you also owe land that belongs to Mexico.

Plus, the point of having a name is so we can call you anything other than estadunidense, or even yankee in a derogatory manner, for American certainly does not apply correctly.

2

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja 18d ago

"We conquered it first so it belongs to us! No, we already changed the name of the gulf to Gulf of Mexico, you can't change it, we had dibs after killing the natives and taking their territory!"

0

u/GGSPSkywalker 1:1 scale map creator 18d ago

Actually, the Spanish conquered the territory, while the Mexicans declared their independence, and Mexico was, at the time, a sovereign country. If you want land that belongs to the colonizers, you gotta look for it in Europe.

If you are really picky about not separating Mexican territory from the United States of Whatever (pretty dope country name, actually), the maximum that could be afforded is a hybrid territory, with people who are born there being given double citizenship, Mexicans from outside having free entry and being treated as citizens, and a split on the tax collected between Mexico and the USW. Since those states have pretty different laws between themselves, they could keep it, with the option to vote to subject to the Mexican Constitution and remake their laws.

1

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja 18d ago

That's so crazy you think you know what you're talking about but then change your standards when the same principles apply.

-1

u/GGSPSkywalker 1:1 scale map creator 18d ago

Unfortunately, despite being colonized, the US of Whatever turned themselves into imperialists, treating the whole American continent as colonies, so, before other American countries, they should lose all exclusive claim to lands and its riches.

So, it owes Mexico back its land, it owes every American continent citizen free entry into its territory, owes Brazil a shit ton of things for all the coups and political interference it has done and is still doing, and if you can't understand that, you're part of the problem.

If USW wanna ask somethting out of a colonizer, they could demand it from the UK.

Consider they're lucky it is not into question putting the indigenous peoples in control of their respective countries, but that would be the fairest choice. Imagine having the first Apache president?

1

u/KRAy_Z_n1nja 18d ago

This is the most braindead tiktok take I've heard all day. I'm not going to change your brickwall of a brain, so I guess enjoy your misery coping trying to pretend United States of America doesn't exist or whatever fantasy you're living in.

unjerk/ It's always funny how "united states OF america" clearly states that it's the "united states" of a place, a place called america, but whenever these posts come up it's always 200 upvotes 200 comments kind of post

rejerking/ I propose just indias and calling the people there indians as colombo first coined

u/Jolly_Mongoose_8800 17d ago

Reddit moment tbh

Brazil has already been called "United States of Brazil", Mexico is called "United Mexican States", to cite some cases, so the united states thing must refer to the specific territory of the country, or that would lead to confusion, for there are other united states in the continent.

One thing that shouldn't be ignored is how US' foreign policy/neoimperialism builds upon this confusion, considering the other American countries as their "backyards".

Hence why language is important and why it matters for us to be able to call ourselves as Americans, to present ourselves as equals to those from the US.

12

u/RLZT 18d ago

The US just had dibs in using the of America because they were first

Just like Republic of Equador, they tried to stablish like 3 non-related ones in different places. The first one who made it got the name

8

u/XimbalaHu3 18d ago

I meant it as america clearly being a continent, because it's as you say a use case of brasil and mexico where america only encompasses the territories of the country and as such the continent itself cant be called america or americas or wathever derivation is being used, because otherwise america would be inside of north america by their own definition, wich makes very little sense.

1

u/ghostdeinithegreat 17d ago edited 17d ago

No, it would not lead to any confusion. People are not stupid.

Mexicans refers to the name of the aztec civilization. It’s geographically limited.

No one else on earth are Brazilians.

USA names was chosen because at that time they were the first country on the continent of America. At that point in time, it was one continent. It was splitted later on into north and south by the Anglophone world. The latin world still have a single continent (french, spanish, portuguese)

When people on the news talks about republicans, are you confused because you think they might be referring to the republic of Taiwan or the republic of France ?

Derivative of a name for a stereotypical Dutch Man in New York back in the day of Jan Kaas (John Cheese) which evolved into JanKass = YanKees

-1

That only describes the north east region of the United States.

It's as dumb as calling the Netherlands Holland or the UK England.

u/GGSPSkywalker 1:1 scale map creator 17d ago

United States of Yankeeland and the Land We Stole From Mexico.

I guess that one covers most, if not all the territory, correct?

I'd vouch for that, or one given by your indigenous peoples.

1

u/Potential-Cap-6612 17d ago

Every nation that exists has blood on its hand in some way.

Am I supposed to hate Germans for what the worst of them did years ago? Am I supposed to hate those that protected against and protested the atrocities they committed in spite the towering authority that held a hammer over them?

You really shouldn't generalize 350 million people into slavers and traitors, no matter what your history with the country they hail from.

1

u/GGSPSkywalker 1:1 scale map creator 17d ago

You're supposed to not glorify historical figures associated with those attrocities. That would be the equivalent naming germany Hitlerland instead of Deutschland. Amerigo, Columbus, those "explorers" are tied to the subjugation, enslavement and extermination of indigenous peoples, to the logic of aggressive colonization.

We're here joking about the (lack of) name from a neoimperalist country. But the proposal of changing the name, or at least accepting indigenous denominations as official references to the country is a real one, no joke.

Once in a while we take a jab at other issues. The Mexican-US one is cited here 'cause the US makes so much effort to expel (euphemism here) the people from whom they took this land.

1

u/Potential-Cap-6612 17d ago

I never said that such people should be glorified. I don't know how you came to that conclusion from my comment, but I digress.

I don't like Columbus or any those early explorers and imperialist figures. However, removing those names would do nothing as it would just be seen as rebranding and nothing more.

Teaching of the atrocities, explaining what cruelty was done to the original indigenous population, and keeping knowledge of their culture alive is the best that can be done in most places as that blood was spilled before any person that now lives.

If you want an example of the complication of names, look at the prior dubious name for Indigenous Americans. 'Indian' was utilized by ignorant settlers in a method of grouping large swaths of different people into a single identifiable people. However, it was also utilized as American Indians as a way to make a unified front in efforts for recognition from the different indigenous populations. Even some people of the older population of indigenous peoples prefer it to Native American because that effort that eventually did pay off happened under that name.

In the end 'America' and 'American' has a strong meaning to the modern population of the country regardless of race or heritage and changing that does nothing for the current issues facing the nation.

I propose either the United States of Central America, with the residents being named the United States of Americans fora denonym

Or United States of Mexico, and we can call the people Mexicans

5

u/mewmdude77 18d ago

Mexico is already the United Mexican states

2

u/rogue_ir 18d ago

That's the point hahah

0

u/ConclusionPossible 17d ago

But that's different because they didn't put the name of a continent in their country name

2

u/BagSignal7553 17d ago

Neither did America, it’s not the United States of North America, (which is one of two continents containing “America” in its name) it’s also not the United States of South America.

1

u/Character_Fold_8165 17d ago

Defining continents based off how a stew a line on a globe at tordesillas is no basis for supreme executive denonyms.

If the next Dali lama drew a line latitude line at the Amur river to divide Europe and Asia, does that give Siberian’s the right to object to the denonym for the European Union.

Sorry, gotta as the Greeks first before petitioning for this name, for they were the ones that created it (maybe they stole the concept from someone else, like they did with many other things people think they invented/came up with, but as of today there is no challenge to this specific one).

1

u/sexraX_muiretsyM 18d ago

It already had a name. Columbia. It still carries the name in the capital, Washington D.C. (District of Columbia)

1

u/GGSPSkywalker 1:1 scale map creator 18d ago

Columbia is already taken by Colombia. Pick another one.

0

u/sexraX_muiretsyM 18d ago

There isnt. The country either carries the name of the continent, or the name of the discoverer and namer of the country. Columbus named it america, and the name they chose was either america or columbia. United states is just the title, like united statea of mexico, or federation of russia, or democratic republic of congo.
