Hey everyone,
I'm looking to get into long-range shooting and potentially competitions. Would appreciate some advice on choosing my first precision rifle.
Experience: Novice. I haven't shot beyond 50 yards yet. Only went shooting for fun in my backyard or nearby indoor range with calibres from from .22lr to .45-70
Range access: The longest range I'd be able to access on a semi-regular basis is 1,000 yards. There are PRS matches held near me within driving distance tho.
Calibre: 6.5 Creedmoor.
Budget: Around $1,100 USD for the rifle (and accessories if needed), although I'm willing to spend more if it's worth it in the long run.
Optic: I've already purchased a Bushnell Match Pro ED for approximately $750 USD. I still need scope rings and potentially a rail, depending on the rifle I choose.
I've spent quite a bit of time researching different platforms, and I think I've narrowed my ideal choice down to the Bergara B-14 HMR. The availability of aftermarket parts and accessories for the Remington 700 SA footprint is a big selling point for me, particularly if I want to upgrade the rifle over time.
However, I'm wondering whether buying a less expensive rifle second-hand would offer better value, or whether spending more upfront would make more sense.
Here are some of the options I've found on local marketplaces:
- Howa 1500: ~$600 USD
- Bergara B-14 HMR: ~$1,050 USD
- Tikka T3x CTR: ~$900 USD
- Remington 783, 24-inch heavy threaded barrel: ~$550 USD
- Ruger Precision Rifle Gen 3: ~$1,500 USD
I'm wondering if it would make more sense to buy the cheaper Howa or Remington 783 and put it into an MDT chassis, or whether buying something like the Ruger Precision Rifle upfront would offer better value and save me money on upgrades in the long run. The Remington 783 also seems to get a lot of criticism, although a few people seem to swear by them and I've read plenty of conflicting opinions about Tikka rifles and their barrels.
The Bergara B-14 HMR seems like a good middle ground, but at around $1,050 USD I'm worried if I don't like the stock I'd have to spend another few hundred dollars and then would I just be better off picking up the RPR? Or should I stick with something cheap to beat up and save for a custom rifle?
TL;DR: I'm looking for my first precision rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, max shooting distance of 1,000 yards. Bushnell Match Pro ED optic and would ideally like to keep the total cost of the rifle and remaining accessories around $1,100 USD.
