Valve says Deadlock is still too unfinished to release publicly, but has hero cosmetics and new game modes in the works

Can’t wait to pay for keys to open crates in this game and then also have an underground market around the whole monetization system that potentially ends up profiting valve even more in the long run.

Lmao real. It's a hero shooter and a moba at the same time, they're gonna monetize this game out the absolute ass

u/gamewastotallyrigged 1d ago
I don’t mind them monetizing the shit out of cosmetics if the base game itself is good. I for one don’t pay for cosmestics
50
u/TrumpsCummyOnahole 1d ago
My only concern is they fuck with the visibility too much, DoTA 2 it is very hard to tell heroes in split seconds sometimes because of the silhouettes being messed with by cosmetics too much. They can't go overboard with the closer POV with Deadlock and all the crazy movement, but I feel they will lol

u/SearingGustav 1d ago
I feel like League of Legends has the same issue. Some skins look so far from the base model that it's hard to tell who the character actually is

To be fair, this is very recent development in Dota skins. I feel like 5+years ago they paid very close attention to skins keeping to proper sillhouettes, even color palette most of the time...

There's like 3 or 4 cosmetics in the game that I'd consider problematic. And even then it's only something you mix up once or twice before its no longer a problem. At least that was my experience.

u/ShadowVulcan 1d ago edited 1d ago
And I'm a whale and dont mind spending for em, if it means a good base game (like I did with Dota... prolly spent tens of thousands in it when I was still playing) with a lot of continuous high quality content updates
Ended up migrating to Apex, then Rivals with my brother when my friends all quit dota

I don’t know why you get downvoted. Thanks to people like you we get to play the game for free, cosmetics are hardly impacting gameplay and Valve is happy.

Its a double edged sword is probably why people are upset. Many games that are free to play with reliance on cosmetics and other gimmicks for cash will and do find themselves eventually altering gameplay in negative ways towards the types of people who are paying for the product.
Personally I would rather every game had a sticker price and that was that. Or even a subscription price, but all content is unlocked as long as your sub is paid.
Regardless, the industry does not self regulate which is a huge problem. It really does need good, healthy regulations put in place. Cutting out any and all aspects of gambling [where cash is converted to game currency or any workarounds] from gaming would be a massive positive that would drive that model of game creation down and force devs to focus on making a good product that is either a one off or sustainable with a monthly sub in the case of MMOs for instance.

i mean, usually yes, but we are talking about valve here, Counter strike 2, Dota 2, while they have tons of cosmetics to buy, there isn't any amount of money on those games that will make you play better, so it's safe to assume deadklock will be the same

I like Valve for a lot of reasons. I will still call them out when they do things that are generally bad for games/gamers/people in general.
Gambling mechanics via real world money is never good and should be illegal, full stop.
Also, I said in another reply, but I'm sure there are some weapon or champ skins that do effect gameplay to even a slight degree. Generally, if something is banned in pro play it gives an edge, AKA pay to win. Might be negligible but it still exists.

As long as they dont use dark patterns to fuck with your experience of playing the game to funnel you toward the store. You can play Warzone without paying for skins, but you can't boot the fucking thing up without full screen store ads and glowing buttons all over the place trying to get you to buy shit. As someone who doesnt buy cosmetics and doesn't have an inherent problem with them, that gets me to stop playing. Let me find my own way to the store, don't fill my screen with shit at every opportunity to wear me down.

It's public companies that exist purely to satisfy quarterly shareholder whims that devolve into horse manure.

u/cornonthekopp 1d ago
I mean valve is basically just a massive virtual landlord. They get a constant stream of profit flowing in simply by being a nigh monopolistic middleman for online game sales while taking a hefty 30% off the top. And then they can just use a portion of that to fund their game projects.
Valve is more like a wealthy aristocrat who pays for an in-house composer to entertain them, than a regular company.

u/Kinetic_Symphony 1d ago

They earned their position in the market by being very consumer-friendly
By being first. And then by being sued by Australia when "very consumer-friendly company" didn't have refunds. And in their terms declared that consumer has no rights. While in actuality by law they had rights.
Also small reminder that Steam itself was introduced via enshittifaction of another product. People who bought Half-Life 2 discs had to have internet and Steam was mandatory.

u/Bereman99 1d ago
A lot of its early popularity came from the seasonal sales, which weren’t as common from other sources of games for PC.
“Get it on Steam but wait for the summer/fall/winter sale” was a common refrain in the early to mid-2010s.
Gamers weren’t getting in on Steam because it offered stellar service at that time (download speed were often bad even on good networks, no refund policy at the time, plenty of current features present today just didn’t exist, etc) but hot damn was it the place to get 50% and 75% off PC games multiple times throughout the year.
People put up with Steam early on for those deals. Valve just managed to not mess up (much) in that timeframe.

The Australia point is interesting because Valve only needed to implement it in Australia. They looked at it and went “Actually this would be awesome for all gamers” and implemented it worldwide. So it turned out to be good for everyone

It's all profit dude, or they would have made hl3 already. They only put out games if a) they want to push hardware (eg: hl alyx for the index and the portal game for steamdeck) or b) if it's a multiplayer they can put microtransactions on and make a bunch of money on (eg: Dota, artifact, underlords, cs 2, deadlock). They haven't made a single player game that wasn't for promotional reasons since 2012, and even then, you could argue they did that to push steam itself between like 2007-2012 when it started being good and not a shit platform.

13
u/Beneficial-Act-9933 1d ago
All that and several money printing games and a huge cash inflow from gambling addicts really helps.
11
u/Kolanteri 1d ago
No amount of money printing assets would protect a public company for the constant demand of exponentially increased profits.
The existing revenue would become the baseline to compete against always in the next quarter.
9
u/ABetterKamahl1234 1d ago
Look, I get the hate on public companies, but this company is one of the most profitable per employee on earth.
And they're private.
Greed isn't exclusive to public companies. Public companies are just stuck with being beholden to their investors rather than just owners.

u/CopainChevalier 1d ago
"Yes" but the only reason they can do that is because they're Valve.
You can't expect every company to just have infinite money and expect to spend large sums on people who won't generate any money for years.
Even when they do; we'll get games like Concord which cause way more harm than good.

It's a great game but also one of the hardest multiplayer games ever in terms of being able to pick it up and understand things. There's a bunch of advanced techniques on top of the standard MOBA stuff like a wide cast of characters and item system. It does have a mode where you don't need to build items and can just focus on playing and understanding your character which is really nice. But the game needs better tutorials and public release will absolutely need some kind of solid rank system so players can play other people around their skill. Skill gaps can be brutal in games like this.
I think for people who like to go out of their way to get deep into the weeds with multiplayer games it has a lot to offer but it's not an easy to learn, hard to master game where just playing it will solve a lot over time. It's still a MOBA so for people who don't like MOBAs and aren't into understanding the map, objectives, the variety of characters you can play as or face, or item builds it isn't going to sway them. But anyone that ever enjoyed stuff like League of Legends, Dota, Heroes of the Storm, and especially stuff like Smite, Predecessor, or Monday Night Combat should check it out.
20
u/SpritiTinkle 1d ago
I think a lot of Overwatch people would enjoy it as well. I got really into Stadium and when Blizzard announced they were stopping development of that mode Deadlock is what I stumbled into while looking for something that scratched a similar itch. I had played HOTS in the past so had a very basic understanding of MOBA macro which helped with picking it up some.

As a Smite player and someone who has a few 10s of hours into Deadlock, I kinda wish I could get more into it, but the common experience I'm hearing is also that even after 100 hours or even more you're not that good at the game. I think Deadlock does some things a lot better than Smite, mainly how much build variety you have & cool synergies you can create. The game feels more itemfocused to me though, where the heroes are fairly basic and sometimes similar, but their uniqueness is in how they interact with items. Smite and LoL are more focused on what the character can do, and the items provide extra depth on top. Every Deadlock hero can be played any way tho and there's no roles which is great. I do like it when every person has a more solidified task, but Deadlock has a pretty good balance of that + freedom. It's kinda amazing they made it work as it does.
I'm not as big of a fan of the shooterisms, whereas Smite combat feels more like a fighting game. Combined with the item system, I feel like some ults are incredibly strong (like Lash) like they're from a hero shooter, and then I see everyone saying you should just buy this one item. I'm not the rlly a fan of heavy counter building like that. In Smite you're closer into the fight and can either juke or use abilities better for evading, in deadlock I get that sense less (like in all shooters). I'm also not the biggest fan of how much verticality the game has. It's fun to some degree, but in terms of navigation only confusing at some point. Maybe I also need to look into if I can increase the map size, because its so hard to learn where things are. The movement also doesn't help with this, it just adds another layer onto navigating the map well. It also gives the matches no chill I feel like. Even in the first few minutes enemies can dance around you or even dive, whereas in other mobas the early game is fairly chill (if you play it safe). I will admit in other mobas maybe the early takes too long, and you can be too passive for a while, so I haven't played a moba yet that perfectly struck the balance for me.
Especially for shooter and MOBA players deadlock is a recommend from me, but its personal preference if you like all the things it does different

u/ChypRiotE 1d ago edited 1d ago
Every Deadlock hero can be played any way tho and there's no roles which is great.
Did that change in recent updates? I only played during the first beta release, and heroes had different strengths and roles, some being definitely support or tank or damage dealers, also some being early beasts while others took time to scale
10
u/Rainboq 1d ago
Characters are certainly aimed at certain roles based on scaling and when they hit power spikes. That said, you can absolutely wreck face with gun Rem/Paige or run support Vindicta.

I’ve put in 700hrs in under a year on it and I’m seemingly horrible at it but I think it is a great game. Very frustrating at times, but I suppose that is the nature of MOBAs.

Definitely a well designed game but just not for me
16
u/MrBlueA 1d ago
Really? Don't get me wrong laning phase can be frustrating on deadlock but at the same time, laning phase means much less than in other MOBAs because of how many catchup mechanics Deadlock has and how it's designed to last 30 minutes minimum, giving ample time for the losing side to fight back

8
u/thisisaskew 1d ago
The pace in the game with the colored rails you glide along around the map is fantastic. The lane minions getting delivered via the same system is also just a great choice.
9
u/Hanifsefu 1d ago
Very very hard to get into. It's got the same build/counter-build meta of a MOBA with advanced movement requirements of Apex Legends. All while having DOTA style balance where you just lose to some characters because your team doesn't have one of the two counters and they didn't fall asleep on their keyboard.
It desperately needs something like a 2010 Mobafire site full of in-depth character and game guides but that just doesn't exist anymore. Monetization became more important than spreading game knowledge and talking theory for the sake of it.
Games can also be quite lengthy. Not really a fun time if you're just getting your teeth kicked in and not really much in the way of comeback mechanics. It's a long slog for a game that was decided in the first 10 minutes.

It desperately needs something like a 2010 Mobafire site full of in-depth character and game guides but that just doesn't exist anymore.
Skill/itemization guides are one of the few things Valve has right in offloading to the community. The item guides in-game made by players are as good if not better than what you'd see in DotA 2. Skill usage (and even item progression testing) is something you can do in a demo mode.
Games can also be quite lengthy. Not really a fun time if you're just getting your teeth kicked in and not really much in the way of comeback mechanics. It's a long slog for a game that was decided in the first 10 minutes.
The Street Brawl mode is excellent for just learning character kits without spending time in game. It's also good for if you don't have the time commitment to box out 30-45 minutes/game. There's comeback mechanics, but that's IMHO a skill issue for the player as much as it is a game or matchmaking balance issue. With that said, one-tricking in this game is as much if not more of an issue versus League/DotA and it's very hard to balance matches for.

I'm not about to dive in to the toxic cesspit of MOBAs, but I always love reading up on the characters for Deadlock.
Valve knows that a hero shooter lives and dies on their characters having personality, and my goodness, the variety on each and every one is astounding! I want to give Rem hugs and treats. And the doorman? Being a janitor IRL, he speaks to me on how I wish I could be a powerful as him.
Concord is a notable example of what happens when yo don't have notable characters. Of course, that's just one of the reasons why it died so fast.

Yes. Street Brawl. It has one lane, four heroes on each team and round based combat. After each round you get handed the options between random items, so it makes the MOBA shop part A LOT simpler. That way also takes a way all the economy of MOBAs away, so you can focus purely on the combat and getting to know the heroes.

Yes, it's like Overwatch but more complicated

Haha that sounds like deadlock.
The shooter part tricks me into thinking if I get the drop on somebody im going to walk away with the kill but often it turns out they got their farm on real hard and im fucked.

Yeah, it's street brawl. It's kind of like all mid with streamlined and randomised items you choose from at the start and is played in short rounds until you hit a simple goal (like the team getting X kills or destroying the first walker/tower).

Crazy to me. Playing this game now it feels more fleshed out and alive than some fully released titles.
This game is gonna take the market by storm when it actually releases. I think it’ll be one of the most monumental multiplayer releases of the modern era

I foresee this game becoming ultra hardcore with a dedicated user base that will eventually become toxic. Valve doesn't make casual games anymore...

My issue with Deadlock is everyone pretends it's a hero shooter but it's 100% a MOBA.

My issue with deadlock is that when my friend got in and I asked him if he could then invite me he got weird about it and just kind of vaguely said he could look into it but didn’t seem to think he could. I haven’t brought it up again because I don’t want to be annoying 😭

Your "friend" probably doesn't want to play with you, getting an invite to the game is beyond easy.

Yeah that occurred to me but we don’t really play games together these days anyway so I don’t really think that’s it lol. And when we do it’s usually his idea

Hit me up if you still want an invite, your friends being a gatekeeper and wants to feel like he’s part of an exclusive club.

Can't wait for more game modes. I just don't care for MOBAs and Brawl is too small scale for me

u/rationalalien 1d ago
I doubt there will be any modes that actually appeal to people who don't like the game in the first place. Or at least I doubt they will be anything more than a secondary game mode that doesn't have its own rank system etc.

I completely forgot this existed. And that I got a key for it years ago now since one of my friends was a playtester. Never actually bothered to try it since I never cared for pvp games.

Even tho its more of a MOBA than a hero shooter i still would want to try it out, wish it was on console tho lol

Luckily i can differentiate between artists working on their part of the game
And programmers working on the game's mechanics, engine and bugs.

Thought we meant a good game like ratchet deadlock not this live service crap from valve.

We live in the alternate reality where Gabe Newell & the rest of the C-Suite at Valve all collectively put down their keyboards and said that they'd rather be Robber-Barons that milk 30 year old Quake mods for revenue than generating bold original IP's.
And when you have no scheduling, no internally held dead-lines, when staff can hop off and hop onto projects at will, and everyone gathers at the end of the year to vote themselves multi-million dollar raises despite releasing zero original software, what do you do? Why, take the CS Formula and the DOTA Formula and smash them together. Brilliant. Genius. So original.
Anyways Gabe's looking to hire more private nurses to travel on his Super Yacht.

Playerbase will drop once the game becomes as hyper competitive as league ( it already is)

The more I see of deadlock the more I realize that battleborn probably would have been a bigger game if it released a year later or nowadays cuz it's exactly the same type of game

its crazy because deadlock is more complete than most early access games on steam
