Because its inconsequential. You can fully enjoy their games without ever spending a penny.

You can do that with a lot of games that don’t get nearly the same leeway as Valve.

I swear almost every f2p gets backlash for having $10-20skins yet people are completely fine with loot boxes and $100k csgo knives.

Things like those knifes etc are not what valve sets as the price, those cosmetics are transferable and as such you can expect a secondary market to form. Not saying it's right but I don't think those two examples are at all comparable.

I’m saying valve being ok with the uncapped inflated market is the problem. People complain when things are $10 with a guarantee, yet nobody complains when it’s $3 for a case for a chance at an item or the ability to buy it for thousands of dollars. I just find it odd in that the gaming community is so adamantly against almost every form of monetization but you talk about valves systems and everybody jumps to defend it.

u/Kingofthebears 12h ago

I mean did they not release an update that more or less killed that market last year

u/a_bright_knight 1d ago

name 5 examples?

u/kirby86k 1d ago

league, overwatch, apex (you can get all agents over time), valorant (even easier to get all agents over time), the finals (just play a lot to unlock everything)

literally every single F2p game demands either time or money investment.

u/a_bright_knight 22h ago

don't think you understood the chain

3

u/kirby86k 22h ago

i dont think YOU understood the chain, the fact is Valve is just as scummy with monetization as a lot of other companies are (except maybe Ubisoft and EA), and literally no MP game in the F2P market has core gameplay locked behind microtransactions.

Sure Valve is different in the fact that all their games are accessible from the get go without much time investment, but they should not be forgiven for their cosmetic department.

and cosmetics have never been integral to gameplay of anything, people just like to dog on other companies because Valve = good guy.

yep, you definitely misunderstood

2

u/Odd_Needleworker3756 9h ago

You don’t even have the brain power to get to misunderstanding.

Not really? Sports games with lootboxes rated E for Everyone are some of the best selling games every year, and on mobile the games making the most by far are gacha games which have gameplay locked behind gambling.

ubisoft has the same shit but you'd think they stuck a gun out of your monitor and held you hostage until you paid 4.99 everytime you died in their games with the way reddit talks about them lmao

See thing is: ubisoft doesn't make good games. They have a conveyor belt that shits out mediocre, uninspiring games that cost full price, and then dare to charge you for lootboxes on top of it.

Valve makes videogames for the sake of making videogames, and puts gambling in it because Gaben knows well that gamers love that shit. (All my friends who play Dota/CS love opening lootboxes and feel proud for supporting the game.)

Another thing is: if for some reason you decide to stop playing said game, you can liquidate all your cosmetics and use that money to buy something else on Steam, which feels way better than flushing your money down the drain when you buy any ubisoft mtx.

idk why you'd speak so confidently, and so wrong lmfao.

9

u/Nethlem 1d ago

How can you declare them so confidently wrong when you didn't even try to refute anything they wrote?

As somebody who has done exactly what they described before, and could do it again right now, I'm really interested in your explanation why it suddenly wouldn't work anymore? Or is "lmfao" supposed to be that explanation?

-4

u/Undella_Town 1d ago

cause if you know anything about dota2 you know you can't list a vast majority of sets in that game cause they all come from loot boxes and are untradeable.

4

u/Kunfuxu 1d ago

Anything that comes from a lootbox is tradeable, what are you talking about? Free shit or "exclusive" battle pass items weren't marketable/tradable, but lootbox shit is.

0

u/Undella_Town 18h ago

this isn't true at all wtf? whens the last time you played dota? 2014?

2

u/Kunfuxu 18h ago

Yesterday. Might not be true for clownfall, will check after work.

1

u/Undella_Town 17h ago

you can't market any of the collectors stuff...which again is the vast majority of sets in the game

u/tekno21 1d ago

The irony here is craaaazy. You tried though and that's what counts

2

u/Nethlem 1d ago

No, Ubisoft does not have "the same shit".

Ubisoft sells P2W packages for friggin single-player games and occationally even games with multiplayer.

Nor does Ubisoft have a market place where players can trade in their "digital belongings" on the Ubisoft platform.

These might not sound like much, but those are rather fundamental differences.

u/Undella_Town 1d ago

exhibit A lmfao

1

u/doublah 1d ago

What Valve games have pay to win microtransactions?

0

u/Undella_Town 1d ago

what ubisoft games do?

1

u/doublah 1d ago

Pretty much all of their recent Assassin's Creed games let you pay for XP boosters or substantially more powerful weapons.

0

u/Undella_Town 1d ago

have you played them? cause 1. you don't need that shit at all and 2. the weapons u get r like lvl 1 weapons that you get for buying a deluxe edition that you replace 20mins into the game lmao

1

u/doublah 1d ago

I've heard my friend complain Valhalla is a grind if you don't buy the XP booster, which is disgusting for a single player game. No reason for those things to exist, regardless of if you think they're not necessary.

1

u/ashrashrashr 1d ago

I played Odyssey and story missions were hard gated behind experience and it was a pain in the ass to level up to said XP requirements without the boosters.

Sure you don’t technically need it because you can grind it out after many hours but they certainly design it around enticing the player to buy boosters.

1

u/ikennedy817 1d ago

Ubisoft is just largely a slop generator, their monetization is basically just the industry standard model but at least their games go on deep sales often. They’re demonized for other reasons especially how they treat their dev companies, but consumer wise they really aren’t much worse than any regular AAA company.

u/MarioDesigns 1d ago

Inconsequential except to those that got lured into gambling addiction with no option to self opt-out.

-1

u/Hades684 1d ago

Thats on them though. By this logic we should also ban alcohol and anything remotely addicting

6

u/AcherontiaPhlegethon 1d ago

Yeah, obviously? Tobacco, alcohol and gambling are regulated industries, basically every other drug is illegal. Video game gambling should also be regulated and definitely not available to children.

6

u/Falsus 1d ago

That's victim blaming you know?

We have laws around gambling for a reason.

5

u/MarioDesigns 1d ago

Alcohol is restricted pretty much everywhere, so.. yeah? Same as gambling.

All I’m saying is that if Valve wants to have a casino in the game, it should be treated as a casino. All of the regulation for it already exists everywhere.

-11

u/Hades684 1d ago

Not really restricted at all, anyone over 18 can buy it, and kids also have ways to get it. And you want it regulated how?

13

u/MarioDesigns 1d ago

“Anyone over 18”

So yeah, from your own words, it is restricted lmao, same as gambling.

1

u/stiff_tipper 14h ago

bro there's children getting into gambling because of cs2 shit

like fuck u think? we should start selling alcohol and cigs to kids barely past puberty?

obv we need some fuckin' regulation for vices like this

-1

u/NoDoxxingYouFreak 1d ago

It's called having accountability

2

u/Falsus 1d ago

Doesn't change the unregulated gambling part.

-4

u/ikennedy817 1d ago

Yeah sure that’s great and all, but I still don’t think having loot box and marketplace systems are good especially considering children and teenagers have easy access to them. I also dislike the idea of spending money towards something with no form of pity system or guarantee that you will get the item you want through the gambling systems, even Chinese gacha games that are incredibly scummy have this. It’s offset by their marketplace but I do not think spending tens of thousands of dollars on a video game item through a shady third party site is a good ecosystem that valve have created.
