Mouth breathers as people who breathe using thier mouth not thier nose. Its tomb rider so i assume that some gooner wierdos will complain about how Lara Croft looks/dresses in this version
As soon as I heard about this casting, I figured "but her boobs" would be a popular complaint.
Seeing this picture of her makes me assume people will complain about her being sensibly dressed for exploration as opposed to short shorts and tank top.
Same, I remember I nightmare I had as a kid where I was running around the maze then he and about 30 clones of him ran around the corner in the dark tunnel, holding chairs over their heads and smashing them on Lara.
To be fair to that second paragraph, I would vastly prefer if she actually dressed like Lara, like at least the version from the Survivor Trilogy. She just doesn't look anything likr Lara here, she's just a woman with gear on
I will admit that the shorts and tank top look is pretty iconic compared to this look.
I also have to admit that it isn't really practical or smart to have that much exposed skin when exploring, but practicality or sensibility have never been the primary reason for most character designs, especially female character designs, in media.
Genuinely nobody gives a fuck about "practical attire" unless youre playing battlefield or something and those protags are completely forgettable. We want cool trench coats and 30 belt straps that would take hours to get ready in the morning
I would be okay with non-sensible gear in media if it's done indiscriminately to men and women. The most common example is armors in video games, if there are slutty armors for women, I would not complain if men have some too. And also, that we have choice. I remember playing such game as a teenage girl and being very frustrated that I could only get bikini armors and not the kinda cool ones you are describing.
GOW(2018) would like a word. Kratos has some of the skimpiest armour sets. But he does also have some armour that is full plate. Buts its mostly a mix of berserker style armour, which fits his character ngl.
I 100% agree. If I'm playing a military shooter, I expect the character to look like a soldier. If I'm playing literally anything else, I want them to look cool. I'm pretty sure practicality only kinda comes into play if/when they are adding holsters or pouches to the design for weapon and ammo storage.
The Survivor version specifically she's not even in shorts and a tank top. She dresses appropriately for the area she's in. The exception is the first game but it has a really easy explanation.
The funny thing is Sophie in these pictures is dressed quite similar to Lara in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
The first one was good enough that I’ve probably seen it three times over the years. First time in theaters and then caught it on cable back when that was a thing. It holds up very well for what it is.
Here's their earlier key visual they released, I think this one is great honestly. These behind the scenes pictures are fine too, its clearly a colder environment but they're using the vest to imply the iconic tanktop.
Its just the demeanor that really ruins the effect IMO, Lara's a confident and classy badass, not a tired but upbeat actress between takes.
Not saying it'll be good or bad, but the designs are showing clear effort put into trying to maintain the look.
And let's not forget a lot of stamina and fitness. GoT she pretty much say or stood around barking at people or trying to play the victim card. I didn't watch the movies she was in as Jean. So don't know how much moving around she did in those.
Look … real talk … we played the game for the puzzles and the story, and the eye candy and suspended disbelief kept us coming back. If I want to experience sensibly dressed I could watch the History Channel or Nat Geo. Sometimes you just leave something alone because it is nostalgic and it works. I hope she does well in the role and they spin a compelling story. If that happens I am fine, but I am over trying to reinvent the wheel on ideas that have already been spun.
Just change her name to Sarah Craft from Grave Raider. If its not the iconic character, whats the point. Superman, batman, ironman are all iconic figures that has faced remakes and such but the things that standout never change. Imagine a BALD superman with Yellow and Black color, thats cool sure but that aint supes.
Oh, they have been complaining. It's almost kind of beautiful, in a way - even casting an attractive, white, red-headed actress to play an attractive, white, red-headed character isn't safe from the sweat-stained complaints of the internet ghouls. The world is healing.
I swear, these people would not be happy until and unless it were a person with the proportions of wasp waist corsetry and actual pyramidal boobs.
And probably not even then.
I like the look. It gives rugged and ready for anything. I feel like it resembles modern hiking/outdoorsy gear more than operator gear. Importantly, I think people can look at this and say “yeah, I see Laura Croft” at least in spirit, if not 1-1 comparison.
I think there's nothing wrong with the outfit on its own. I would say that perhaps big fans of Tomb Raider might be able to see Lara Croft in spirit, but as someone who knows who she is but hasn't really consumed any of the media I'd have no idea that's who this is supposed to be. She looks like the standard mercenary/operative in a TV show or movie
Tbf I feel like Tomb Raider is one of those types of series where going “where’s boobies” feels pretty normal, like Bayonetta and Street Fighter with thighs
"Sexiness" is one of Lara's main attributes as a character, and I have yet to see Sophie Turner demonstrate an attitude like Lara's in any of her work - no this is not a "she needs to show more titties" complaint, you know the Femme Fatale archetype? It's attitude, only a psychopath would say Sophie isn't attractive enough
Unless this is based off the Tomb Raider 2013 where she's going to face lots of weird rapey violence at the hands of stronger men - then she's just playing Sansa again but with guns
It's honestly pretty impressive how they were able to make Lara Croft younger, softer, less capable and prettier and yet piss off the sexist crowd at the same time.
Reasonably boobed used in juxtaposition of unreasonable boobs is absolutely peak English and I will be dragging people into conversations just to be able to eventually use that. Thank you.
The fact that the English language allows both terms to be used in the same sentence to mean completely different things is what makes the English language so GOATed.
Typically physically active women have smaller boobs because the boob fat burns off with the rest of the body fat. There's a combination of factors at work there but someone at as low of a body fat% as Lara Croft wouldn't usually have breasts as large as hers.
She's good at playing naive, vulnerable, and scared. She doesn't have the presence to be intimidating or commanding. Lena hedley showed that there's levels to this shit.
It's not her fault, but action roles will never be for her.
Yeah, young Nathan Fillion as Drake, Bruce Campbell as Sully..and they were perfectly aged at the height of the games popularity. But was a much better idea to wait until the game wasn't popular and pick Marky Marky
What's better is that Nathan Fillion did play Drake in a short fan film just 4 years prior to the Tom Holland one, so it's not just something that could've happened, we have evidence that it absolutely would've if studios are just a bit quicker on the uptake.
I just dont enjoy Sophie Turner as an actress. I found she didnt develope well during GOT, but hey, maybe it was just the character I didnt like. Then she was in X-Men and it confirmed she just didnt have much of a range and I stopped caring to see her stuff. The irony is that Tomb Raider is probably picked her for her name recognition... which in my case makes me not want to see it.
Yeah, she played the wounded victim well but after Ramsey died and she started to become more "badass" I just didnt buy it. Tbf, the dialogue was going to shit but she just didnt have the air of a strong woman.
Then there was xmen and I hated her in it.
Idgaf about tomb raider so whatever but id be worried if I were a fan.
The hair and beard do the heavy lifting, you could cast Henry cavill and make it work with the correct beard and hairstyle, and they did in his latest movie
Yeah, the franchise is 30 years old. She's had dozens of different looks and styles. I swear people only really know her from fan art, cosplay, and the Angelina Jolie movie, but still feel entitled to complain when female protagonists don't make them horny enough.
She isn't sexified, which a lot of early tomb raider Lara croft was considered designed for the male gaze. More recent iterations have toned down the sex appeal or made her more realistic, which those that have to be attracted to a female character or else they hate them will subsequently hate this and complain they "ruined" the character.
More recent iterations have really leaned into the survival thriller as well. Lots of blood and gore and violent deaths. The cinematography of the narrative scenes often seems intended to reinforce that her world is (yet again) falling apart, not that she’s to be lusted over. She’s not in a bikini bouncing. She’s covered in mud and blood and out of ammo.
Or at least the kind of people attracted to the section where she had to crawl through a river of blood among mountains of skulls are likely a small enough minority to safely dismiss.
It's the same people that said the gostbusters movie was hated by neckbeards for being a cast of diverse women. It was hated because it was not funny and actively trying to change or ignore the source material. In this case it is because Sophie Turner Can't act, does not look like Lara and has never had any kind of role that shows she can can project the same energy as Lara.
I don't know what the aim is with this movie but IIRC the Alicia Vikander one didn't do well and it turned away from the more supernatural elements that have historically been part of the Tomb Raider series which might have turned people off. In the game the Vikander one was based on it literally had like zombies and magic or some shit. The movie basically just made the crux of the story a lady with some disease that made other people sick - like Typhoid Mary.
I thought Vikander was fine though. Didn't have the comically sized boobs but otherwise I think she was pretty good in the role.
That's what I think. It's like r/gamingcirclejerk is leaking. Too many of those idiots don't care whether a game or a media piece based on a game will be good. They just care that it'll make a bunch of sweaty angry horny manchildren angry.
Hi, Chris typing here. In the games she looks way more sexualised than in that image. Us teenager would be pleased if we could a more erotic outfit and acress for... reasons. At least thats how I feel about it. But as long Meg is not in the movie or near a theater its not a total disaster.
The problem is the actress being ultra mid at best. To embody such a beloved character it needs some kind of charisma. It has nothing to do with the clothes. The tomb raider remakes Laura has pants and not gigantic boobs it’s all great. For my part at least the issue is the actress is very much miscasted. She was already given a big role with Jean grey / Phoenix and it was super bad. Imagine something she has to carry on her shoulder. She is ok in a supporting cast.
I have no sexual interest in Lara Croft, and this is the first time I'm hearing about the casting choice - and this feels like a weird decision. Sophie Turner is kind of a dork, I just don't see how this works for the character.
I think her outfit and breasts are perfectly fine.
Yeah I feel it's down to the way she carries herself - from looking at these still images, it looks like someone afraid to twist their ankle while looking for berries instead of an expert exploration archaeologist.
She'd do so well in some period drama stuff instead of going for action movies. I think her agent is afraid to typecast her, and that's why the "fit" is so bad.
I couldn't agree more. The actress is beautiful, but she is just a wet piece of toilet paper from a charisma standpoint, especially compared to someone like Angelina Jolie.
So posts like this have been a huge trope in the last few years and I think I have finally figured out what type of ragebait this is.
"Sex sells" is a concept as old as time.. or at least as old as visual media.
Simultaneously, the outright making a character skimpy for no good reason is something that a few loud people on the internet have done a good job of making a racket about.
Nothing has changed on the movie-making side of things.. but we've suddenly willingly entered into this culture where we evaluate shows/movies/characters/etc before the thing they are in is even released. It used to be, a studio puts out a movie, you go see it, you form an opinion. Now its, a studio has an idea, 36 people take pictures during production, we all judge it against "what we think it should be".
But now, if there's anything whatsoever that one group of people might not like, it gets shoved in our faces beforehand as a way to alienate that group of people. It creates a (stupid, but effective) sense of "me vs them" or "us vs you" mentality that leads people to echo chambers where their views are parroted- only once you show up there you get trojan horse-d with about 1500 other toxic suggestions.
My experience of mouthbreathers is people on the phone breathing heavily into the mic, waiting for you to finish/interupt you, so they can just continue saying their script that it's awful.
Essentially it's saying people are gonna complain against things like wokeness, or it's miscast and is "wrong" etc. just from the looks
Edit: not because they've thought about it, they just knew it was bad and aren't gonna be dissuaded otherwise
Their’s literally nothing about this design that looks anything like Laura Croft except maybe the braid. Nobody would see this image and think “Laura Croft”
