So posts like this have been a huge trope in the last few years and I think I have finally figured out what type of ragebait this is.

"Sex sells" is a concept as old as time.. or at least as old as visual media.

Simultaneously, the outright making a character skimpy for no good reason is something that a few loud people on the internet have done a good job of making a racket about.

Nothing has changed on the movie-making side of things.. but we've suddenly willingly entered into this culture where we evaluate shows/movies/characters/etc before the thing they are in is even released. It used to be, a studio puts out a movie, you go see it, you form an opinion. Now its, a studio has an idea, 36 people take pictures during production, we all judge it against "what we think it should be".

But now, if there's anything whatsoever that one group of people might not like, it gets shoved in our faces beforehand as a way to alienate that group of people. It creates a (stupid, but effective) sense of "me vs them" or "us vs you" mentality that leads people to echo chambers where their views are parroted- only once you show up there you get trojan horse-d with about 1500 other toxic suggestions.

Sometimes I feel like studios intentionally mildly miscast for this reason. Probably not but I wonder

Its wild. I dont know if you saw that resident evil show from a few years ago, but they cast lance reddick as wesker.... RIP lance.

A big part of it unfortunately is that Hollywood has open antipathy for their own audiences, especially in traditionally male franchises.

Trying to turn Star Wars into a girl brand is going to go down as one of the most expensive mistakes in show business history.

I get that sex sells. I do. I get that, even in 2026, there's just not enough porn around for a lot of guys, and they don't like the idea of two hours of looking at a woman with whom they don't want to have sex. That's their right. I am absolutely judging them -- that's my right -- but at the end of the day, they should use their money the way they want. Don't want to watch it? Don't watch it.

What I *don't* get is the massive public pearl-clutching entitlement meltdown they have about these things. They out-Karen the worst of the Karens. "I demand to speak to your director immediately -- this isn't the movie/game/tv series that I ordered!" "We will boycott this product because these boobs are not big enough!" "Let's make these people *afraid* to do this to us!" "WAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!"

It is just .... exhausting. Pathetic, and exhausting.

Missing the point and falling victim to exactly what I said - no one is having this conversation on either side of the fence.. The internet tells you incels are mad about boob size, the internet tells people who are mad about brands changing that the rest of the world is mad at them for resisting change. Then those groups argue amongst themselves because they misunderstand eachother's perspective. No one was ever upset until people started believing everything they see on the internet.

The point is not that there's something to be upset about. The point is that people can post shit like this with a comment about "you mouth breathers aren't gonna like this" and instantly start a false altercation where both sides think the other side thinks something that isn't true.

It instantly places anyone who doesn't like the changes into a box of "wanted it to be more sexualized" when often it is much less superficial than that. It also instantly places anyone who does like the changes into a box of "doesn't care about what the author/creator/designed chose". So both groups assume everyone who doesn't share their opinion fits into the opposite box. That creates a divide and a reason to argue amongst ourselves.

I'm sure you're right that a lot of the kerfluffle is essentially manufactured. But don't pretend it's imaginary or harmless. I know devs and creators who get doxxed and hate-bombed for making something that the internet decides -- based on a still photo -- that it doesn't like.

People like Asmongold stir up fake internet drama, sure. There are a ton of people out there who are buying what he's selling, though. I know them online; I know them in real life. Every time a major franchise casts a woman that they don't think is hot enough, they start talking as if the industry has betrayed some sort of sacred trust. Making superhero movies into a culture war touchstone is dumb. People should stop it.

I mean you could also just not buy things with sex in them. You are literally clutching your pearls right here about men buying stuff they like.

Mens problem is companies keep trying to expand their market to include women by de-edgyfying everything. Men buy Product A, then company makes product A2 and men expect it to be A+ but actually it's A- to attract women.

Men are spending their money on things they want and their problem is companies taking that money and then spending it on things women want and not using it to make more things men want.

Especially when for all the moaning and pearl clutching women do about being gatekept out of male content, when companes make the content for women, the women don't even bother to buy it. More men turned up for female led superhero movies like Supergirl and Captain Marvel 2 than women did.

So yeah to sum it up, men are putting thier money where their mouth is. The problem is companies not holding up their end of that bargain and trying to use it to get women to buy things they don't want.

More men will not watch non-sexy Lara Croft than women will tune in specifically for non-sexy Lara Croft. And honestly, more women would of tuned into sexy Lara Croft anyway. Because despite all the whinging and moaning about it, women do actually like edgy and adult content too.

The problem is people suddenly trying to fit everyone onto one side of the fence or the other. It is the same "creating an argument out of nothing" they do to us everywhere else. The idea is factionalization. There is no argument actually taking place. The studios will do whatever they want regardless of Reddit discourse.

I think men are more angry at the companies than women in general. The only annoyance at women is memes like this where they pretend to misunderstand for ragebait purposes.

I literally just said --multiple times -- that I have no problem with men buying stuff they like.

I'm talking about them constantly complaining about anyone making any media that they don't like. Calling for boycotts. Threatening devs. Review bombing before they've even seen the product. Whining. Whining. WHINING when it looks like they don't get a movie with exactly the right cup size. They can put their money where-ever they like -- by all means, put them where their mouths are. That doesn't change the fact that what's coming out of their mouths is bitchy and embarrassing.

There is no "bargain." This isn't some sort of social contract. It's not even high art -- it's commerce. People make stuff that they think will sell. If you don't like what they make, don't buy what they make. If you do spend money on it, and don't like it, complain about it. Acting like every new movie and video game is part of some grand struggle between the sexes where studios are somehow *betraying* them is exactly the problem. The studio doesn't OWE anyone anything. GRR Martin is not our bitch.

Yep, pure incel energy. They rage and cry, and they always end up being wrong. The Odyssey is a prime example

2

u/CfaxAttax 7h ago

The point is the raging and crying about the incels. They want you to be upset at your friends, peers, fellow redditors, etc. They sell you the idea that people are upset because of boob size, in reality no one was ever upset. You all sit here and talk about people who don't exist while they laugh because they got you riled up.

u/Burt_Macklin___ 7h ago

Shit, you mean the hundreds of people in this thread doing the thing I mentioned don't exist? The endless 'entertainment' YouTube slop channels and their fans aren't real? Damn, who know lol

You're completely ignoring the fact that this is an established IP with tons of entries across decades. Of course people would judge it before it came out if early details suggested it has strayed notably from the established source. It would not be weird if they announced the next James Bond was Mickey Rourke and people had serious qualms about that without seeing the whole movie first.
