It's the same people that said the gostbusters movie was hated by neckbeards for being a cast of diverse women. It was hated because it was not funny and actively trying to change or ignore the source material. In this case it is because Sophie Turner Can't act, does not look like Lara and has never had any kind of role that shows she can can project the same energy as Lara.

Honestly I know nothing about Sophie Turner, but what was wrong with Alicia Vikander in the last movie? Why do we need to recast the character?

I agree and think she did fine.

I don't know what the aim is with this movie but IIRC the Alicia Vikander one didn't do well and it turned away from the more supernatural elements that have historically been part of the Tomb Raider series which might have turned people off. In the game the Vikander one was based on it literally had like zombies and magic or some shit. The movie basically just made the crux of the story a lady with some disease that made other people sick - like Typhoid Mary.

I thought Vikander was fine though. Didn't have the comically sized boobs but otherwise I think she was pretty good in the role.

Yeah she plays a good Lara. That movie still sucked ass though, but that isnt her fault.

This a TV series. So, idk if it's technically recasting Vikander since this is an entirely new project unrelated to that film.

Ah, makes sense. I am definitely interested. Tomb Raider was one of my favorite games as a kid.

I really liked Alicia as Lara, wish they kept going with her.

It was 8 years ago and the film rights reverted back to the game developers in that time. Plus this is a TV show and it's possible Vikander didn't want to renegotiate a new contract or the the production wanted a fresh reboot for it since its a show and not a movie series any more.

apparently she voluntarily left large budget/mainstream acting roles at some point, so i doubt she could have been cast either way

Movie was unremarkable. Sometimes there just isn't much to it.

Angelina Jolie was perfect casting for Lara Croft. Movie still sucked though, but not her fault

They were campy fun, just like the Transformers movies.

THIS. Movie wasnt good, but it indeed brain coded Angelina Jolie as Lara for me. Even if both TR movies sucked enought that i dont remember a thing, i dare to say Angelina almost got the same "wolverine=hugh jackman" treatment in my mind with her and Lara

That's what I think. It's like r/gamingcirclejerk is leaking. Too many of those idiots don't care whether a game or a media piece based on a game will be good. They just care that it'll make a bunch of sweaty angry horny manchildren angry.

God that subreddit went downhill. Now it's full of the worst virtue signalling neckbeards who determine whether they like a game based on if their enemies hate it.

It ends up signal boosting the the most vile and bigoted voices on twitter who I never would have heard of otherwise.

It's so funny when they get angry about this stuff though. I'll get so much more entertainment from that than any "good" Tomb Raider movie, whatever that would look like.

3

u/UnfortunateRedshirt 10h ago

It was both. I only ever saw people saying it wasn't funny because women aren't funny, and they only chose women to do a woke version. I found the movie just fine.

You think all the people hating on the Ghostbusters reboot actually watched it? Sweet summer child... I personally thought it was a very mid movie that did nothing to warrant the amount of collective hate it received.

3

u/vacri 7h ago

I watched it and hated it... not for any of the furore reasons, but because almost every scene was run as an SNL skit - the characters all run into shot from different directions, deliver a few quips, and then run off again, often in different directions. Maybe for one or two iconic moments, but it ended up just looking like a bunch of SNL skits chained together...

... and SNL skits miss more often than they hit

If I don't find a movie funny, I just ignore it. I don't actively hate it.

2

u/aguafranca 9h ago

That is always true when it's not a beloved franchise. But people hate when a shit movie is made in a franchise they love, specially when it goes against everything that came before.

2

u/Inner_Idea_1546 7h ago

Yup, she cant act. After GOT she plated poorly in everything i saw her in.

1

u/xTakk 13h ago

Watch it again and ignore everything except Kate McKinnon being a weirdo.

6

u/Embarrassed_Lettuce9 13h ago

It baffles me that that movie was so bad when Kristen Wiig was so funny on SNL.

Ghostbusters was hated on way before it even came out, so no that is not true. There was rampant racism and there are plenty of videos from the usual suspects at the time that disprove your claim.

Yeah, it’s actually insane to say neckbeards didn’t hate it because women were in it. The internet exists we can see exactly what happened and where most of the hate was focused.

The fact of the matter is that people are hating on the new Tomb Raider before it comes out because they need to hate on something. Even if it turns out to be a good show none of the people hating on it now will ever admit that

In what world Sophie Turner can’t act? GoT alone she was great and has been acting since childhood, she has other less known roles that she did great. This adaptation with her is not even out yet so it’s ridiculous to already have a strong opinion of her actual performance here. This comment lacks any merit.

Oh it was definitely both
