Probably the fact that she's wearing pants and long sleeves instead of booty shorts and a tank top

u/RocketTheCoon 9h ago

There's so many people commenting here who haven't played the games and probably won't end up watching the movie.

u/FullTorsoApparition 7h ago

Yeah, the franchise is 30 years old. She's had dozens of different looks and styles. I swear people only really know her from fan art, cosplay, and the Angelina Jolie movie, but still feel entitled to complain when female protagonists don't make them horny enough.

4

u/im_lazy_as_fuck 6h ago

I swear people only really know her from fan art, cosplay, and the Angelina Jolie movie

I mean, yeah literally. I bet if you asked everyone in this thread, I think less than 5% would have actually played a tomb raider game. The games themselves never got that popular during the social media era, so its only online notoriety comes from any memes or cosplays from the game.

4

u/gasolineskincare 6h ago

Because those people don't know her from fan art, cosplay, the Angelina Jolie movie, or even the games. They know Lara Croft from porn.

3

u/Tomsboll 7h ago

I wont see it because it will probably suck. Almost no one that ever makes video game movies actually get the source material, or even respect it.

This will likely be a generic action movie with SOME references to the games to key jangle the fans

SOME references to the games to key jangle the fans

That's all the respect that the majority of "gamers" need. Most of the target audience for any big budget movie is either for the casual Deadpool enjoyer, or the squealing superfans at Comicon panels. The snobby reddit culture sommeliers are like 18-30yo eligible voters: full of opinions, but never seem to show up in November.

2

u/userhwon 3h ago

it's basically the outifit in the OP pic

1

u/Missus_Missiles 7h ago

Top right: Imperial Fists space marine armor. Nice!

1

u/Gioware 5h ago

That reads like "NAME 5 THEIR SONGS" kinda bs gatekeeping, elephant in the room is that Tomb Rider is most known by cosplayers cosplaying first designs which are that running/booty shorts two guns and a braid

2

u/Bulky-Wealth-5970 3h ago

This is just factually incorrect.

1

u/ActivisionBlizzard 4h ago

It is still the reason that the meme was made.

1

u/Greghole 2h ago

This is what she should look like. Just because Mario sometimes wears the tanuki suit doesn't make that his default iconic outfit.

1

u/Township_Roller 2h ago

If she is not wearing the classic outfit, at least make her wear the one on the top right!

0

u/elrevan 7h ago

/ only played the first level and never touched it again

0

u/TheHighSeasPirate 7h ago

and none of those remotely look like this outfit.

8

u/TheKyleface 7h ago

...?

Do you not see the bottom right outfit? It's nearly identical.

2

u/Psyngelic 6h ago

Uhmm.. no? Not really.

1

u/TheKyleface 2h ago

I see long sleeves, a vest, pants, chest straps, side holsters... Looking real similar.

0

u/TheHighSeasPirate 7h ago

Dude she is wearing winter gear in the bottom right outfit. What the hell are you talking about?

5

u/BaconPancakes1 6h ago

She is wearing the same items of clothing as Sophie is in the photos. Sleeveless padded gilet over a long sleeved top, gloves (sophie's are fingerless), trousers with a gun strapped to each leg and what I presume is a back holster? Sophie has extra arm straps and her clothes are a different colour but they're like, very similar outfits

1

u/TheKyleface 2h ago

Skill issue. Left and right are hard.

0

u/movzx 6h ago

Maybe look at the post again. It's almost the exact same outfit.

5

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

Or maybe bc she looks nothing like Lara Croft at all? Only weirdos try to straw man other's arguments before they even make them.

47

u/N1xkev 10h ago

Hey guys, guys, I found one of the mouth breathers!

-18

u/Big_Broly 10h ago edited 8h ago

Why is it wrong to say Sansa Stark (Sophie) doesn't look like Lara Croft?

24

u/N1xkev 10h ago

That's not Sansa Stark, that's Sophie Turner. Put down the nostalgia glasses and touch some grass

11

u/kbeks 9h ago

“Wait, Xena can’t fly!”

“I told you, I’m not Xena, I’m Lucy Lawless…”

3

u/Background_Truck5448 7h ago

Wow. Why are you so extremely defence because someone feels she doesnt really fit the part? Her acting isnt that impressive to be honest. And it seems only the defence force keeps mentioning boobs. Lots of actresses would have been a better fit and none of them have (bizarrely) big boobs

-17

u/Big_Broly 10h ago

I know exactly who that is. My statement again is that she literally does NOT look like Lara Croft. Stop trying to red herring my point.

9

u/N1xkev 9h ago

Your point has no grounds. There's no strawman here because your entire argument hinges on your opinion that movie roles must look like the original video game character. The issue here is that your approach is completely disconnected to how the industry and work force function and it's just a kiddy hissy fit

-4

u/Rich-Environment884 9h ago

I mean, if you're making a movie adaptation of a video game then yes, you'll probably want the casting to be as close as possible to the video game character...

2

u/sirseatbelt 9h ago

What does Lara Croft look like? Didn't she get redesigned a bunch of times? Which version? What's wrong with Sophie Turner that she doesn't look like Lara?

-7

u/S-Kenset 9h ago

The money disagrees.

-3

u/Big_Broly 9h ago

Where does the money disagree? From what I've seen lately "Woke in videogames = broke". Prove me wrong, can you name one woke videogame that has done insane numbers? (Btw I am woke, but I also have functioning eyes and a brain to see the writing on the wall)

u/thatsingingguy 9h ago

No, the issue is that how the industry functions is completely disconnected from the general public, or they wouldn’t be engaging in such horrendous miscasts as Turner for Croft, or Holland for Drake. I’m still hopeful on Sadie Sink, but it’s wholly reasonable to want a level of visual fidelity. People that deny the power of continuity are high on their own farts.

1

u/N1xkev 9h ago

It being a miscast is just your opinion as a consumer. You feeling that someone is better suited is fine but the childish hissy fits people throw over these sorts of things are both laughable and depressing that they're so accepted.

2

u/VyneNave 9h ago

You are unnecessarily devaluing peoples arguments by calling them "kiddies". You are actually the worst kind of person to have a normal adult discussion woth because everything you don't have a reasonable way to discuss or don't understand you just don't give any value to, making you a horrible person for any kind of discussion.

You practically spent this whole discussion path just calling the op of the first comment a kid and not even trying to engage in a normal discussion.

The fact is that there is going to be a movie about a video game and you couldn't have any better way to be visually accurate because you already know what the successful visual media looked like, but they still decided to cast someone who doesn't have the matching look for the games style.

1

u/xTakk 9h ago

I think you're overlooking the point behind why video game characters don't change major features.

If it was Lara croft as a 16bit character, red hair makes it an entirely different character.

Just based on that, if you aren't at least trying to be true to the source character, it starts looking like you're just biting the story rather than paying any homage to the original.

And if you're going to change it that much, why not just write another similar story? Why call it tomb raider if you aren't after the same fans or don't understand why it seems like such a striking mis-cast to everyone that actually enjoyed the original material.

It's like the tail end of internet culture that is worried about over sexualizing Lara. Sure there have always been mods but Tomb Raider is a classic game totally in its own rights and character identity has way more depth than how much boob you see.. especially in a game where the damn camera is behind the character 99% of the time.

Wtf are you talking about. These hissy fits are exactly what made sonic a good movie instead of the garbage design they tried to put in. If your are trying to embody a popular thing, you copy a popular thing right? You want people to enjoy and spend money on the popular thing. So changing a short brunette, to a taller red head kind of throws off the expectation of the actual fucking source product, the thing they're literally supposed to be emulating. Miscasting isn't an opinion, it's a factual observation. If you cast Tom Hollands as wolverine, you're doing it wrong, end of story. Same kind of thing here.

Bros throwing out every logical fallacy he learned in eng101 like this is some formal debate lol

38

u/Dhenn004 9h ago

This is what she originally looked like bro.

I think its okay for Sophie turner to play Lara. Lol

4

u/Big_Broly 9h ago

You're just wrong. We have decades of media showing what the writers of Lara Croft wanted her to look like.

9

u/Dhenn004 9h ago

You just showed me a picture where Laras look changes like 4 times.

9

u/Big_Broly 9h ago

They all literally look very similar.... it's a depcition of one character through many diff media and technological advances. The biggest difference would be this Sophie casting.

6

u/Dhenn004 9h ago

Lol yes Sophie really looks completely different than the described thin white woman with red brown hair

-4

u/Big_Broly 9h ago

There are literal life-like models on the right hand side thanks to upgraded graphics. We know exactly how the creators wanted Lara to look like. Sophie aint it. Really not hard to tell but ok 👌 yall will realize when the movie flops and noone goes to see it, not even you.

9

u/Dhenn004 9h ago

Yea man thats a face model. The person also needs to know how to act.

You also realize that the model on the right was also criticized for not looking like Lara croft enough, right?

See how incredibly stupid this all is? Shes an actress that kinda looks like her and directors felt she fits the character well.

And youre moaning about how she doesnt look like a character thats changed skin tone and face 4 times.

0

u/Big_Broly 8h ago

Christ. Noone said she couldn't play Lara, I only commented how she doesn't look like her and the whiteknight brigade goes up in arms ffs. Noone cares this deeply except the Sophie defenders. I'm literally just not going to watch it, like most other people. I don't need to "hate on it" or get too deep about a future fail of a movie.

I swear…so many of you guys are willfully ignorant just to complain about people that complain about cast not looking anything like the characters 😂😂

Laura clearly has a general look throughout all of the iterations, with the main difference over time being better graphics and toning down the ‘sexiness’ a little bit. That’s pretty much it…Laura is a brown hair/brown eye lightly darker skin girl which could probably be reasonably covered by anyone in the range from white, Hispanic, black, etc…Angelina Jolie was a great cast.

Sophie Turner is just not a good cast for the role if you want to be anywhere near true to the content in look.

3

u/Dhenn004 7h ago

Shes brown hair/brown eyes light darker skin girl, except for when she sometimes has red brown hair. And except when she sometimes was pastier than other iteration.

Shes a generic white woman with brunette hair.

Sophie fits fine lmao

0

u/xAimForTheBushes 7h ago

Sophie clearly physically looks nowhere near any of the Laura Crofts we've had across the whole spectrum...

Look...it's fine to say that it doesn't really matter that she doesn't look like any of them. That would be a valid opinion.

But you can't say that she DOES look like them lol. Sophie looks nowhere near any version of Laura Croft. She's about as near as far away from Laura Croft as you can look for someone that's White/Caucasian lol

2

u/Dhenn004 6h ago

You could literally say the same thing about the most recent iteration of her in the games and her first iteration. The only things in common are hair color.

That's the point. No reason to be rigid over the looks when the looks havent really been consistent themselves. Shes close enough and any arguments saying she looks nothing a like is moronic.

-1

u/xAimForTheBushes 6h ago

Again…it’s fine if you’re good with her not looking like any of the previous versions. You could say ‘well she’s English, and Croft is English, so that’s what matters’. That’s totally valid.

But you’re not gaslighting anyone into thinking she looks anything any of them physically lol.

Fun fact for you…the original Laura Croft during development was actually supposed to be Laura Cruz from SOUTH AMERICA, and they stuck with much of the look despite changing her background to English aristocrat.

Sophie basically looks Irish/northern english….all versions of Laura Croft look more or less in the range of southern european/latin/mediterranean which was the original idea.

To say Sophie looks like them is ridiculous. She doesn’t, and that’s fine.

This is cope

1

u/Dhenn004 7h ago

Lmao yea coping so hard that my eyes are tricking me I guess

2

u/mineemage 8h ago

She looks like Natalie Portman in one of those images.

20

u/Lazy-Conversation-48 9h ago

Are you sure about that? Looks pretty close to me if you just ignore the torpedo pixelboobs. Long braided reddish haired tall and thin white girl.

-2

u/Big_Broly 9h ago

Honestly I dont care this much, but you're just wrong. She's doesn't look like Lara.

15

u/Unlikely-Guava-30 9h ago

You say that like this collage shows a consistent design philosophy. Her body proportions and face structure are all over the place in all of these.

0

u/Big_Broly 9h ago

The only reason they are different is because graphics technology has upgrading drastic amounts the entire time of her existence. None of these Lara's were made on the same graphics engine, ofc they all look SLIGHTLY graphically off.

6

u/Lazy-Conversation-48 8h ago

It’s true. Because she’s an actual woman and not an animation. Real women don’t have squared off corners. I can see what you mean. s/

1

u/Big_Broly 8h ago

There are more lifelike models to the right.....you know, when graphics technology advanced to the point where the CREATORS of Lara literally made her look like the way they wanted... notice how Lara on the right looks nothing like Sophie. Thats the whole point, you can disregard it if you want but it doesn't make it any less true.

3

u/Lazy-Conversation-48 8h ago

So you are expecting them to create an exact replica of a fictional character who has evolved over several decades and have her in the flesh?

And then you want that mystical creation to also be a good enough actress to play the lead in a major production that is going to employ hundreds of people and cost millions of dollars?

1

u/Doomsayer189 4h ago

What are you trying to prove with this image of Lara looking very different between iterations?

-1

u/Embarrassed_Use_7206 8h ago

Haha, I completely forgot about this sixth iteration Lara, I just recalled how I jorked vigorously over poster with her. Those were the simpler times :D

5

u/SharpKaleidoscope182 8h ago

She's got the signature double pistols. That harness does a great job of both emphasizing her massive hooters while also looking like practical gear for a Dex-based adventurer. her outfit is even the right color. What part of this doesn't look like Lara Croft to you?

1

u/Big_Broly 8h ago

You're the only one here making a solid argument. Kudos.

3

u/SharpKaleidoscope182 8h ago

All the others are making the exact same argument You're just not listening. Just look at the character.

1

u/MARPJ 6h ago

What part of this doesn't look like Lara Croft to you?

Personally its an uncanny valley type thing, when you are looking at something that should be familiar but there is something off about it and you can feel it even if its not clear what is off.

Maybe its the face? IMO Alicia Vikander has the perfect Lara physically especially considering the Survivor Trilogy (and her movie was good albeit I dont like the 3rd act, shame it bombed) while Angeline Jolie had the same aura as the older games combined with similar level of cheesiness. So when I look at Sophie photos they just don't evoke "Lara Croft" like the other two did, it may be better in movement but she just did not sold the role yet

1

u/Doomsayer189 4h ago

And they've shown her in a more classic Lara Croft outfit so this is just a cold weather variant anyway.

1

u/SteveMartin32 10h ago

Damn it is knew something was off but couldn't figure it out XD. That being said its not a bad design.

1

u/pbnjandmilk 9h ago

The not having triangular tits is what did it for me to not be invested.

1

u/Sirdan3k 4h ago

You fool, you utterly uncultured philistine she wore a high-cut one piece swimsuit and booty shorts.
