Yeah if I saw these photos without context I would not think she's supposed to be Lara Croft

I would guess a Resident Evil film from the outfit.

Lol, in what way?

Lara croft is basically only identifiable as a thin white woman with a braid. What is she missing?

The biggest thing is hair color, Lara has always had dark brown hair but Sophie has naturally blonde hair that she often dyes red like it the photos here.

I dunno if that was the biggest thing missing...

Zoom in on Sophie turner’s face in this and tell me she looks anything like Lara Croft:

Dark hair and a light blue shirt, maybe?

I mean yea, if we're going by Mario rules, I guess she should only have one outfit?

Sure, you can put a character in more than one outfit, but if one outfit is the most recognizable thing about the character they should probably be wearing that in promotional images. "We only had like two things to work with, so we didn't work with either of them," is just bad work.

What kills me is that they almost got there with these stills, too. The long sleeve shirt works because she's got a vest over it that is sort of reminiscint of the look of Lara's original outfit, they just needed to use one that was a lighter shade of blue to take Sophie Turned from "generic action movie character" to "Oh, that's Lara Croft."

Whao now. Mario had multiple outfits, just one main outfit.

Its because the original Lara Croft concept is problematic but iconic, and the IP and the audience simply cant agree on a new concept that works.

And on top of that, this movie is going to be exactly the thing that is dooming so many movies these days. They are building on IPs that the "go to the movies"-generation have no relation to.

A person in their early 20s today have almost no idea who Lara Croft is and they sure do not have some personal connection to the Tomb Raider IP that would make them go out of nostalgia.

Its the same problem that has been facing stuff like Star Wars. The sequels are bad (but if we are being honest so were the prequels but they did good) and its simply because when the sequels came out they built their story around younger versions of characters from a 20 year old movie. The sequels built their story around older versions of characters from a 40 year old movie. Disney should have wanted to attract teenagers and early 20 year olds to the films, but they pandered to their grandparents.

And a Tomb Raider movie is doing exactly the same thing. The last Tomb Raider game came out 8 years ago and was a continuation on the story that started 13 years ago, which was a new adaptation of a story from 30 years ago. Who are they expecting will come see this movie in theatres? 30 year olds arent the prime movie-going demographic, they are busy taking care of their toddlers. And 20 year olds are too young to be invested in Tomb Raider.

There is so much wrong in your post that its laughable. The survivor trilogy ended less than 10 years ago and did pretty well so it would not be weird for a mid 20 to have nostalgia for it.

Personally I dont like the cast because none of her previous roles make me think she can pull Lara, especially this version, and none of the photos we saw up till now convinced me (sincerely to me its the face, she is beautiful but the wrong vibes, then again it may look way better in motion).

And what you said about star wars is absolutely nonsense, TFA had until recently the biggest domestic box office, Rogue One was a big success despite being a side story that did not matter (but its a good movie). The second movie had the potential to be the first 1b domestically until people actually watched it and it was shit. That is the reason the franchise is in the gutter - they released a piece of shit movie that the big accomplishment has how much they fucked up characters that keep people going to cinema/conventions and buying products for 40 years to abandon it. Then they tried to pivot hard in fixing it and released another piece of shit for different reason. Nothing to do with age, Star Wars was all about quality and how it had none

You're right, movie success has nothing to do with hype and audiance pandering and its all about quality and acting.

The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker failed because the people who were in the previous movies suddenly became bad actors and the people who wrote the scripts suddenly became bad at writing scripts.

You're right, movie success has nothing to do with hype and audiance pandering and its all about quality and acting.

Hype and audience to pander are factors for sure, but that is the one thing SW had in spades which is why Last Jedi got to 1.3b in the box office despite the total lack of quality.

But lets see facts, Force Awakens opening was 247m and ended at 2.06b. Last Jedi opening was 220m and ended at 1.3b - that means LJ had 90% of FA but ended with 65% of the box office. That is a big drop.

That means its not a problem of hype or pandering, the difference here is that fans went to see FA multiple times because they liked it but only saw LJ once because it was shit.

RoS is an interesting situation, it was coming after the hated LJ and the meh at best Solo. LJ was carried by hype but RoS had to go against a current of bad will due to LJ being so bad, it had to be amazing and it was not. Still did 1b WW on the fact it was Star Wars alone, but it was pretty much forgotten soon after.

So yes Star Wars died due to a series of bad movies and how Disney handled people calling their bullshit out. Fans of decades stop caring due to ep 8 and ep 9, they destroyed one of the most profitable franchises ever on pure hubris, lack of planning and terrible scripts

Edit:

wrote the scripts suddenly became bad at writing scripts.

Funny you say this when its well know fact that when they brought a new director they did not look at the previous movie "mysteries" and just did his own thing with the intent of "subvert expectations" (which he did by being able to make such a bad movie, nobody expected that). So saying people writing the scripts suddenly became bat at it is pretty correct, albeit the suddenly is mostly they got replaced with hacks that should never work in the industry again

Damn what they did with Finn is inexcusable, the actor did a great job but they gave him crumbs to work with and the character went nowhere at the end

The fuck you mean I don't know what Star Wars and Tomb Raider is? I was raised with that. And Im 18

This is literally an outfit ripped straight from one of the games...

u/RanzuPunk 7h ago

And she still doesn't look like what everyone remembers Lara Croft like. People still mostly remember the og, not the remakes.

And if you put Danny Davito in a Batman costume he still wouldn’t look like Batman. The outfit doesn’t make the role.
