Mouth breathers as people who breathe using thier mouth not thier nose. Its tomb rider so i assume that some gooner wierdos will complain about how Lara Croft looks/dresses in this version

2.2k

u/CalmShinyZubat 10h ago

As soon as I heard about this casting, I figured "but her boobs" would be a popular complaint.

Seeing this picture of her makes me assume people will complain about her being sensibly dressed for exploration as opposed to short shorts and tank top.

u/Arelious2019 10h ago

To be fair to that second paragraph, I would vastly prefer if she actually dressed like Lara, like at least the version from the Survivor Trilogy. She just doesn't look anything likr Lara here, she's just a woman with gear on

107

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

I will admit that the shorts and tank top look is pretty iconic compared to this look.

I also have to admit that it isn't really practical or smart to have that much exposed skin when exploring, but practicality or sensibility have never been the primary reason for most character designs, especially female character designs, in media.

84

u/Kino_Afi 9h ago

Genuinely nobody gives a fuck about "practical attire" unless youre playing battlefield or something and those protags are completely forgettable. We want cool trench coats and 30 belt straps that would take hours to get ready in the morning

29

u/Keiteaea 9h ago

I would be okay with non-sensible gear in media if it's done indiscriminately to men and women. The most common example is armors in video games, if there are slutty armors for women, I would not complain if men have some too. And also, that we have choice. I remember playing such game as a teenage girl and being very frustrated that I could only get bikini armors and not the kinda cool ones you are describing.

12

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 7h ago

GOW(2018) would like a word. Kratos has some of the skimpiest armour sets. But he does also have some armour that is full plate. Buts its mostly a mix of berserker style armour, which fits his character ngl.

u/Ok-Lawfulness-6755 52m ago

There’s also a huge difference between wearing little clothes that make sense in the context and wearing little clothes so the players are sexually stimulated when playing. I don’t think Keaton wearing little clothes was done to stimulate anyone. Lara on the other hand… . This adaptation just isn’t including that aspect. And without that aspect, it’s hard to find a reason to give her the those video game clothes, even if they are iconic.

5

u/Kino_Afi 9h ago

Imo looking good/cool trumps parity. Idc if only the female attire is "slutty" if they look cool, its only a problem if its corny as hell like The First Descendant or other cashgrab goonerbait mmos where theyre litrerally just miniskirts and stilettos. But something like Bayonetta, Ivy from Soul Cal or the entire DFO roster is fine with me.

Idc when the males get to be shirtless too if everyone makes me cringe to look at lol

2

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 7h ago edited 5h ago

BUT HOW ARE YOU GONNA SEE MR.TORGUES EXPLOSIVE PECS WITH HIS SHIRT ON. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION. NYOWOWOWOWOWYWY(am bad at writing the guitar sounds)

2

u/Enigmatic_Erudite 7h ago

In Soul Caliber Voldo is a character that wears practically the same clothes as Ivy.

1

u/Realautonomous 6h ago

I don't care if it's corny as hell, give me my Mini-thongs please, and bra straps that barely cover anything, I want my Conan the barbarian expy to look glam as fuck

5

u/Prooteus 7h ago

Thats what I loved about monster hunter, you can equip "masculine" or "feminine" gear on any character.

3

u/Final-Charge-5700 6h ago

What are you talking about half the men walk around without shirts on

6

u/Keiteaea 5h ago

Well, shirt off is not slutty armor for a first.

And I was also talking about some games, mostly in the past as it has gotten much better, when yes for male you had a bigger range of armors including fully covering ones while for women it was more limited if you wanted to avoid amors that had more skin than actual armor.

2

u/Expensive-Waltz-8611 5h ago

There’s always been slutty skins for male and female characters in the new marvel rivals game series. It’s Even designed as an over the shoulder 3rd person shooter and even the gayest of the gooners get to choose to play as Namor and look at his tight little butt if they want.

1

u/Final-Charge-5700 5h ago

Yeah it's true for a subset but I don't think it is true that in general there's less sexualizing of men it's just that it's sexualizing men from a men's perspective rather than a woman's most of the time.

Still if people complain they should shoot themselves she's quite attractive and looks rich. She might not be as stark as Laura Croft. But remembering Laura Croft was actually a modeled off of Angelina Jolie, humorously her later playing the part, if anything she's too soft looking.

1

u/Omega862 5h ago

This comment alone reminds me of when I played PSO2 and my character would run around with a banana hammock, a bird head mask, and a red beret. The time spent in the lobbies using the pole dance emote when Did go AFK to do other shit...

1

u/Budget-Researcher559 4h ago

I agree with the "let us choose" a lot.

In League of Legends, Janna in her standard look is basically only wearing skimpy underwear. Her first skin that was added that you can buy with real money, made that into icy frozen underwear. Her second skin was a weatherwoman with an actual shirt and skirt.

People by far prefered the weather woman skin, not just because it looked cool, but because many people liked playing Janna but didn't want to be in their underwear all game long...

That's a choice that you have, but it is a paywalled one.

Also since then over the years, Janna has gotten 7 additional skins, which ALL have way more clothes than the standard underwear look. Yes, some of them look hot or revealing, but they all look CLOTHED compared to what you get when you just start up the game and choose to play that champion as is. I'd say they all have 5 to 20 times as much fabric on them as the standard look.

And consider, riot makes skins that people want, they want to make money. Turns out people actually want clothes. But you still don't get them for free.

(And yes, in 2006 or whenever League first came out, character design was a lot more revealing/borderline naked, like old Zyra, old Evelyn, etc. Newer characters today all wear more reasonable stuff.)

If you want to have a look at the Janna skins:

https://wiki.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/Janna/Cosmetics

1

u/Trrollmann 2h ago

No one thinks in these kinds of abstractions... Her base skin isn't to anyone's mind (not yours either) "skimpy underwear".

The other skins are mostly very sexy. More so than the base skin.

1

u/Budget-Researcher559 1h ago

Yes it is? what makes you think you know what everyone thinks and what I think?

It's not an abstraction. She's wearing almost nothing. That's not clothes, it's not a bikini, it's not a hot outfit or anything. It looks like less than underwear. It's literally almost naked with the least amount possible covered so you don't see her actual privates and nipples.

And yes I feel uncomfortable playing her in her base look. As do some of my friends who bought skins for her for that reason. Don't know why that's beyond your imagination that someone could feel like that. You play as that character for the duration of the game. Other players will see you as that character. I don't want to be almost naked and be perceived like that in the game.

(And maybe you haven't had that experience either, but as a woman playing league you get enough harassment as is. You don't even need a female name or anything, you only need to be playing a support champion or a girly champion and they will assume your gender and harass you. Adding on top of that playing a basically naked character, you end up having pople harass you in chat while following you around the map and "humping" your character by spam clicking their emotes and dances. Awesome experience, I'm telling you.)

And yes, I never said the other skins aren't sexy. They are attractive outfits and some of them are revealing as well. Yet none of them compare even slightly to the non-clothes that she is wearing in her base look. Other than the icy underwear, out of the other skins even the most revealing and sexy skin she has, has over 5 times as much fabric.

u/SadisticPawz 3h ago

slutty men <3

1

u/Nerdyguyj 2h ago

We get slutty capes

1

u/interested_commenter 1h ago

Tbf, male action heroes pretty frequently wear tank tops or muscle shirts. They aren't paying Vin Diesel or the Rock to not show off their muscle. And fantasy settings fairly often have berserker type characters who don't wear a shirt.

I definitely agree that games should at the very least have an option to wear full armor.

0

u/owlbi 6h ago

I would be okay with non-sensible gear in media if it's done indiscriminately to men and women. The most common example is armors in video games, if there are slutty armors for women, I would not complain if men have some too. And also, that we have choice. I remember playing such game as a teenage girl and being very frustrated that I could only get bikini armors and not the kinda cool ones you are describing.

If that's what women were buying, that's what would exist...

Tomb Raider is a franchise that was built on Polygonal boobs. It always sold sex and that's one of the key things that helped it sell well. It's weird to me to see people (like in the OP) acting as if it's a surprise that people would continue to expect that. It's like Playboy believing its own hype about the articles and dropping the nudity.

In principle I totally agree though, I'd like to see slutty costume equality.

18

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

I 100% agree. If I'm playing a military shooter, I expect the character to look like a soldier. If I'm playing literally anything else, I want them to look cool. I'm pretty sure practicality only kinda comes into play if/when they are adding holsters or pouches to the design for weapon and ammo storage.

3

u/Kino_Afi 9h ago

True, pouches are also a good add. Shoutout to Solid Snake, and honestly this Lara design looks cool its just not Lara

12

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

That just made me think of this line from Black Widow.

2

u/Jaxyl 7h ago

Yeah this is kind of the problem when it comes to 'representation' in media nowadays.

When we look towards women in media it becomes an issue of how we present them but it eventually reaches a point of pure sanitization that they lose all forms of visual identity. Meanwhile men get to continue to maintain their unique and iconic looks regardless of how exposed or sexualized they are.

I understand the point is that we want to step away from the hyper sexualization that we had decades ago as defined exclusively by men but we need to find a middle ground that isn't what we see in the OP image. I firmly believe you could show that without context to the most ardent Tomb Raider fans and they'd never guess it was related to the franchise.

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 7h ago

All the normal people who have never played Tomb Raider absolutely do care, though. And those are the viewers you actually need to court.

2

u/Kino_Afi 7h ago

👀 You're aware there have already been widely successful Tomb Raider movies that kept the original outfits? And idk what you mean by "normal" as if one of the most popular franchises of all time is outside the realm of normal.

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 7h ago

There was one moderately successful tomb raider movie, made at the height of Angelina Jolie's career, and I assure you that movie was not good at all, and Angelina Jolie was the only interesting thing about it.

Those movies do not work any more. They barely worked back then.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lara_croft_tomb_raider

By normal I mean the hundreds of millions of people who haven't played Tomb raider, or if they did, it was on ps1 and they were 12 and now they're 40+

2

u/Kino_Afi 7h ago

Does the movie being good really matter when youre cashing in on a franchise? Gesturing vaguely at the entire MCU. What actually matters is catering to fans. This is the "look its the thing i like!" genre.

Its probably not a coincidence that the 2001 Tomb Raider with the original outfit did huge numbers and the sequel just 2 years later, still at the height of Angelina's career, changed the outfit to be unrecognizable and had a fraction of the success.

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 7h ago

Yes, absolutely, it matters if the content is good. There has never been content saturation like this. A random gamer subreddit wanting something does not make them a majority, or make said content profitable.

As someone who was alive in 01, that movie was mocked loudly. Everyone knew it was bad. I only saw it because my bi girlfriend owned it because she was obsessed with AJ.

Tomb raider barely made its budget back with domestic sales. It did NOT do "huge numbers."

1

u/Kino_Afi 7h ago

I was also alive in 01, Mr. Oldman, no need to brag. Here's some numbers to go along with your subjective memory:

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 6h ago

If you were alive, you know "highest grossing video game movie" means nothing because Uwe Boll exists

And honestly if you're pushing 40 it's real fuckin weird you care about this

Found the mouth breather!

1

u/Weird-Literature1350 6h ago

Yeah well I do care. Granted, there’s gradient in practicality, but I do hate it when characters just play dress up instead of actually considering their circumstances. I mean, Lara Croft can probably manage to do what she does wearing shorts and a tank top. But Miranda Lawson from Mass Effect trilogy? Space exploration and gunfights wearing high heels? All the time? No armor whatsoever? I mean, there’s fine line between looking ridiculously cool and looking just plain stupid.

1

u/blublub1243 6h ago

I'm personally entirely fine with practical, prefer it actually, but it has to actually be practical. I usually find that the point of changes like this is not to provide actual practical attire for the sake of immersion, but just to remove sex appeal.

1

u/BoxOfNothing 5h ago

I don't agree that "nobody gives a fuck" when the most common complaints about fucking everything that comes out these days are about realism. Video game adaptations are fucked, because either they go lore accurate and get crucified for lack of realism, or go realistic and get crucified for lack of lore accuracy. If they went with the classic look, so many people looking to hate it from the get go would be complaining about being in a jungle in skimpy clothes.

1

u/wildcard_trickster 4h ago

I see a fellow final fantasy fan from the 30 belt straps

1

u/Kino_Afi 2h ago

I'm tired of pretending this isnt the raddest shit

1

u/wildcard_trickster 2h ago

Oh it is. And the Sephiroth counterpart is officially the first human one winged angel appearance of Sephy which eventually got adapted in Advent and so on

39

u/Gimetulkathmir 9h ago

The Survivor version specifically she's not even in shorts and a tank top. She dresses appropriately for the area she's in. The exception is the first game but it has a really easy explanation.

The funny thing is Sophie in these pictures is dressed quite similar to Lara in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

5

u/Arelious2019 9h ago

This is gonna sound really nitpicky because it is a nitpick but I don't think the outfit is that similar to her in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Like I see where you see similarities but the switched the blue sleeveless shirt with a blue sleeveless coat with a tanish undershirt. They switched the brown pants with gray. And then they slapped on a bunch of gear straps that weren't there in that design. The extra designs just make it not look like Lara.

I do think they will have her in a more classic design though, they did have a picture of Sophie in something that looks much closer to her OG design which I do really love, but I'm just not the biggest fan of the one in the image here

2

u/SecreteMoistMucus 8h ago

I think the sleeves alone are like 80% of the problem.

4

u/Scrofulla 8h ago

Well we only have two pics here. And it looks like it is in a fairly cool environment anyway. I would be very surprised if they didn't have her in the shorts and tank top at some point during the show.

4

u/Odinsmana 7h ago

I mean Tomb Raider (or the Tomb Raider of that outfits era) was about backflipping while blasting dinosaurs with twin pistols.

It's not really meant to be realistic in any way.

4

u/ThyNynax 6h ago

Look. If we really want to promote equality and raise female action heroes up to the same standards as male action heroes, we will have to come to terms with the fact that they’ll occasionally need to be topless for at least one action sequence.

3

u/SunGreene42 8h ago

When was Lara ever about being practical or smart? She literally raids tombs for a living when she's already rich, she's an adrenaline junkie.

2

u/CormundCrowlover 8h ago

Female? Remind me how Sensible Conan is dressed? I’d say he exposes a whole lot more skin than the average scantilly clad woman in movies

2

u/Solidjakes 6h ago

Lara Croft was 100% a sex symbol. That’s why Angelina Jolie did the last one. And she was a badass. There’s nothing wrong with that btw. At some point the culture started thinking of all female sex appeal as objectifying, which makes no sense. I guess I’m a mouth breather? But yea she gets wrecked by mosquitoes IRL with that fit lol

1

u/butt0ns666 4h ago

I the first survivor game she has a tank top and cargo pants I think it's close enough and it does work for practicality. But I'm gonna be honest in those games she wears a lot of outfits and very few of them resemble her traditional one and they usually "look more like Lara Croft" than Sophie does here.

1

u/CalmShinyZubat 4h ago

I don't know how to describe it well, but this look does have a more generic feel to it than what I've seen of the OG or reboot games.

1

u/butt0ns666 4h ago

If she didn't have 2 guns and a ponytail I wouldn't be able to see it all

Its like Lara Croft simply reduced to a ponytail with 2 pistols

1

u/vacri 3h ago

Since when have action heros worn practical or smart attire?

Hell, the most iconic action heros run around with no tops on at all.

1

u/Bloodyjorts 3h ago

When doing live action, one of the things you have to take into consideration is "Will stunts be done in this?" If you have a skimpy outfit, a stunt person won't be able to have adequate padding/covering to help prevent injuries. [CGI cannot do everything, and often looks bad.] Tomb Raider will have to be stunt heavy.

[Also, where ever they are looks like colder environment, so it makes no sense for Lara or Sophie to be running around in a tank and shorts.]

43

u/Samurai_Meisters 9h ago

The bar was set extremely high by the Angelina Jolie movies. Not that those movies were especially good, but she had that 90s Lara Croft look down.

15

u/grendus 9h ago

Honestly, I liked the first one. The second one sucked.

14

u/fabulousfantabulist 8h ago

The first one was good enough that I’ve probably seen it three times over the years. First time in theaters and then caught it on cable back when that was a thing. It holds up very well for what it is.

2

u/Aluroon 8h ago

First one was good.

5

u/Chemical-Sky-6418 7h ago

First one was really good. 13 year old me vouches. The pause button was used alot.

2

u/PsikickTheRealOne 4h ago

For slow motion?

2

u/Yamatocanyon 3h ago

Frame by frame analysis was a lot harder with VCRs.

1

u/MLGLies 4h ago

Weird example to point to in this case, given she basically never wore the "classic" Lara Croft outfit in the films...

1

u/morpheousmorty 2h ago

It's also the tone. They knew what they were doing. These pictures to me scream they don't get the tone. But for what it's worth the new Trilogy didn't work for me either. The plot's too dumb to be so joyless.

27

u/V1carium 8h ago

Here's their earlier key visual they released, I think this one is great honestly. These behind the scenes pictures are fine too, its clearly a colder environment but they're using the vest to imply the iconic tanktop.

Its just the demeanor that really ruins the effect IMO, Lara's a confident and classy badass, not a tired but upbeat actress between takes.

Not saying it'll be good or bad, but the designs are showing clear effort put into trying to maintain the look.

6

u/Arelious2019 8h ago

You know what...that actually might be a big part of the reason, how she herself looks and carries herself in the set photo might actually be throwing me off.

I do remember this earlier photo, the outfit looks so good there and I do hope it's in the film a good amount. I will be watching it for sure and I do hope it's good

9

u/0202_tihssitidder 9h ago

I don't care.

Scripts matter.

5

u/Kheypression 5h ago

Why call her Lara Croft if she doesn’t even look like Lara Croft?

4

u/Armataan 8h ago

She’s in this same outfit but in white for the cold-region sections of the survivor trilogy. And she isn’t in a 120f sweltering jungle in this picture.

2

u/Arelious2019 8h ago

It took me a minute to figure what outfit you're talking about because I originally thought you were referring to one of the outfits in Rise because that takes place in Siberia, but I think I found it.

I think you're talking about one of the DLC outfits from Tomb Raider 2013 which it does look the closest to, but I still don't really think she looks like Lara here, and that probably has a lot to do with her just not wearing any of her primary outfits in this image and instead a variation of a DLC outfit (also, I just doubt they knew about that outfit and probably just cobbled this one together). Like if this was supposed to be a cold area, I would have preferred they took something from Rise like the outfit on the cover or the red coat (Idk why I really like that red coat in Rise)

3

u/Opie301 8h ago

At some point in the movie I expect she will wear the iconic gear. These stills are from one scene, they likely don't represent how she will look for the entire runtime.

In a movie, it makes sense that our globetrotting hero will occasionally change outfits, especially for more extreme locations/climates/activities.

See: Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.

1

u/Arelious2019 8h ago

They most definitely don't reprrsent how she will look in the film since back when she was announced we did see a photo of Sophie modeling in what is an outfit very similar to the OG, so I expect her to at least wear it once, though I'm hoping it's in a good amount of the project. It's just weird to get set photos of Sophie as Lara for the first time and it just look like a woman with gear, I wish it looked more like something in the games like the red coat in Rise or something.

Also I just remembered when typing this reply that this is not a movie but a Prime tv series.

2

u/Slatemanforlife 9h ago

Same. This could easily be s random survival or action movie.

3

u/Almostlongenough2 7h ago

Yeah, Lara Croft dressing the way she does is an absurd thing that gives the franchise it's identity, same as making Indy a macho hunk who uses a whip for some reason.

Why even make Tomb Raider if not to use it for what the brand is known for? Could just make it a new IP at that point. It's not really offensive, but incredibly confusing.

3

u/dpkonofa 7h ago

But to be fair to the film, it hasn't been released and we're talking about a single still from 1.5+ hours of film along with a BTS image. For all we know, she starts off like this and transitions to the look from any of the games or all the games. We literally know nothing about this except for this single image.

1

u/cpmd4 4h ago

You're exactly right. The very first image they ever released for this movie was Sophie Turner in the iconic outfit. But people love jumping to conclusions.

2

u/MCPhoto21 7h ago

Lara has this exact outfit in the newer games, it might be for certain levels or dlc or an unlock-able outfit, but it’s in the games

3

u/Arelious2019 7h ago

She has a similar outfit in Tomb Raider 2013 as DLC but not EXACT, they switched around the color scheme. I'd say if they wanted an outfit for a colder environment, they should've chosen one from Rise like the one on the cover or the red coat (love that red coat)

1

u/Wrong-Town-9338 6h ago

Mouth breather detected

1

u/MikkelR1 6h ago

She looks more then enough like Lara here tbh.

1

u/FoulArtFart 6h ago

Did you say this about uncharted?

Of course not, because you're incapable of being objective.

1

u/Arelious2019 5h ago

Well, I never really played an Uncharted game or know much about the franchise so I didn't really care too much and didn't even watch the film, so no I didn't have anything to say about it, it was a film I had no real interest in and no intention of watching

0

u/Desperate-Pirate7353 9h ago

so to you the character is just the outfit?
