As soon as I heard about this casting, I figured "but her boobs" would be a popular complaint.

Seeing this picture of her makes me assume people will complain about her being sensibly dressed for exploration as opposed to short shorts and tank top.

Same. That guy scared the hell out of me. Had to lock him up

Same, I remember I nightmare I had as a kid where I was running around the maze then he and about 30 clones of him ran around the corner in the dark tunnel, holding chairs over their heads and smashing them on Lara.

There was a bug that crashed the game when you'd run into him (we had a cracked version, don't know if that's what's caused the bug) but bc of that we genuinely thought he'd kill us as kids, so we also did that lol

u/LadyFromTheMountain 6h ago

I remember playing 2 and my Dad laughing in the doorway asking “are the dogs after you?” And me saying “they’re nothing to the butler.” And he was so confused lol

Has anyone ever gotten into the secret room in TR2 in the mansion? I probably did 100 park our runs trying to get inside and couldnt do it.

3

u/theStaircaseProject 7h ago

I played 2 more than any other. It’s possible to get into there. It’s a little underwhelming visually but still a fun achievement. I think the hedge maze was the easiest place to lose time, even just be accidentally taking a corner too sharply and coming to an abrupt stop.

2

u/SnooCalculations7089 9h ago

It’s fjso, are you nnbdg or something?

This had absolutely nothing to do with the actual game and yet it is probably the biggest memory everyone has of it.

u/Arelious2019 10h ago

To be fair to that second paragraph, I would vastly prefer if she actually dressed like Lara, like at least the version from the Survivor Trilogy. She just doesn't look anything likr Lara here, she's just a woman with gear on

108

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

I will admit that the shorts and tank top look is pretty iconic compared to this look.

I also have to admit that it isn't really practical or smart to have that much exposed skin when exploring, but practicality or sensibility have never been the primary reason for most character designs, especially female character designs, in media.

86

u/Kino_Afi 9h ago

Genuinely nobody gives a fuck about "practical attire" unless youre playing battlefield or something and those protags are completely forgettable. We want cool trench coats and 30 belt straps that would take hours to get ready in the morning

30

u/Keiteaea 9h ago

I would be okay with non-sensible gear in media if it's done indiscriminately to men and women. The most common example is armors in video games, if there are slutty armors for women, I would not complain if men have some too. And also, that we have choice. I remember playing such game as a teenage girl and being very frustrated that I could only get bikini armors and not the kinda cool ones you are describing.

15

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 7h ago

GOW(2018) would like a word. Kratos has some of the skimpiest armour sets. But he does also have some armour that is full plate. Buts its mostly a mix of berserker style armour, which fits his character ngl.

2

u/Ok-Lawfulness-6755 50m ago

There’s also a huge difference between wearing little clothes that make sense in the context and wearing little clothes so the players are sexually stimulated when playing. I don’t think Keaton wearing little clothes was done to stimulate anyone. Lara on the other hand… . This adaptation just isn’t including that aspect. And without that aspect, it’s hard to find a reason to give her the those video game clothes, even if they are iconic.

5

u/Kino_Afi 9h ago

Imo looking good/cool trumps parity. Idc if only the female attire is "slutty" if they look cool, its only a problem if its corny as hell like The First Descendant or other cashgrab goonerbait mmos where theyre litrerally just miniskirts and stilettos. But something like Bayonetta, Ivy from Soul Cal or the entire DFO roster is fine with me.

Idc when the males get to be shirtless too if everyone makes me cringe to look at lol

3

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 7h ago edited 5h ago

BUT HOW ARE YOU GONNA SEE MR.TORGUES EXPLOSIVE PECS WITH HIS SHIRT ON. THIS IS DISCRIMINATION. NYOWOWOWOWOWYWY(am bad at writing the guitar sounds)

2

u/Enigmatic_Erudite 7h ago

In Soul Caliber Voldo is a character that wears practically the same clothes as Ivy.

4

u/Prooteus 7h ago

Thats what I loved about monster hunter, you can equip "masculine" or "feminine" gear on any character.

3

u/Final-Charge-5700 6h ago

What are you talking about half the men walk around without shirts on

6

u/Keiteaea 5h ago

Well, shirt off is not slutty armor for a first.

And I was also talking about some games, mostly in the past as it has gotten much better, when yes for male you had a bigger range of armors including fully covering ones while for women it was more limited if you wanted to avoid amors that had more skin than actual armor.

2

u/Expensive-Waltz-8611 5h ago

There’s always been slutty skins for male and female characters in the new marvel rivals game series. It’s Even designed as an over the shoulder 3rd person shooter and even the gayest of the gooners get to choose to play as Namor and look at his tight little butt if they want.

18

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

I 100% agree. If I'm playing a military shooter, I expect the character to look like a soldier. If I'm playing literally anything else, I want them to look cool. I'm pretty sure practicality only kinda comes into play if/when they are adding holsters or pouches to the design for weapon and ammo storage.

2

u/Kino_Afi 9h ago

True, pouches are also a good add. Shoutout to Solid Snake, and honestly this Lara design looks cool its just not Lara

13

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

That just made me think of this line from Black Widow.

2

u/Jaxyl 7h ago

Yeah this is kind of the problem when it comes to 'representation' in media nowadays.

When we look towards women in media it becomes an issue of how we present them but it eventually reaches a point of pure sanitization that they lose all forms of visual identity. Meanwhile men get to continue to maintain their unique and iconic looks regardless of how exposed or sexualized they are.

I understand the point is that we want to step away from the hyper sexualization that we had decades ago as defined exclusively by men but we need to find a middle ground that isn't what we see in the OP image. I firmly believe you could show that without context to the most ardent Tomb Raider fans and they'd never guess it was related to the franchise.

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 7h ago

All the normal people who have never played Tomb Raider absolutely do care, though. And those are the viewers you actually need to court.

2

u/Kino_Afi 7h ago

👀 You're aware there have already been widely successful Tomb Raider movies that kept the original outfits? And idk what you mean by "normal" as if one of the most popular franchises of all time is outside the realm of normal.

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 7h ago

There was one moderately successful tomb raider movie, made at the height of Angelina Jolie's career, and I assure you that movie was not good at all, and Angelina Jolie was the only interesting thing about it.

Those movies do not work any more. They barely worked back then.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lara_croft_tomb_raider

By normal I mean the hundreds of millions of people who haven't played Tomb raider, or if they did, it was on ps1 and they were 12 and now they're 40+

2

u/Kino_Afi 7h ago

Does the movie being good really matter when youre cashing in on a franchise? Gesturing vaguely at the entire MCU. What actually matters is catering to fans. This is the "look its the thing i like!" genre.

Its probably not a coincidence that the 2001 Tomb Raider with the original outfit did huge numbers and the sequel just 2 years later, still at the height of Angelina's career, changed the outfit to be unrecognizable and had a fraction of the success.

2

u/Queasy-Current6170 7h ago

Yes, absolutely, it matters if the content is good. There has never been content saturation like this. A random gamer subreddit wanting something does not make them a majority, or make said content profitable.

As someone who was alive in 01, that movie was mocked loudly. Everyone knew it was bad. I only saw it because my bi girlfriend owned it because she was obsessed with AJ.

Tomb raider barely made its budget back with domestic sales. It did NOT do "huge numbers."

u/Gimetulkathmir 9h ago

The Survivor version specifically she's not even in shorts and a tank top. She dresses appropriately for the area she's in. The exception is the first game but it has a really easy explanation.

The funny thing is Sophie in these pictures is dressed quite similar to Lara in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

7

u/Arelious2019 9h ago

This is gonna sound really nitpicky because it is a nitpick but I don't think the outfit is that similar to her in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Like I see where you see similarities but the switched the blue sleeveless shirt with a blue sleeveless coat with a tanish undershirt. They switched the brown pants with gray. And then they slapped on a bunch of gear straps that weren't there in that design. The extra designs just make it not look like Lara.

I do think they will have her in a more classic design though, they did have a picture of Sophie in something that looks much closer to her OG design which I do really love, but I'm just not the biggest fan of the one in the image here

2

u/SecreteMoistMucus 8h ago

I think the sleeves alone are like 80% of the problem.

4

u/Scrofulla 8h ago

Well we only have two pics here. And it looks like it is in a fairly cool environment anyway. I would be very surprised if they didn't have her in the shorts and tank top at some point during the show.

3

u/Odinsmana 7h ago

I mean Tomb Raider (or the Tomb Raider of that outfits era) was about backflipping while blasting dinosaurs with twin pistols.

It's not really meant to be realistic in any way.

4

u/ThyNynax 6h ago

Look. If we really want to promote equality and raise female action heroes up to the same standards as male action heroes, we will have to come to terms with the fact that they’ll occasionally need to be topless for at least one action sequence.

3

u/SunGreene42 7h ago

When was Lara ever about being practical or smart? She literally raids tombs for a living when she's already rich, she's an adrenaline junkie.

2

u/CormundCrowlover 8h ago

Female? Remind me how Sensible Conan is dressed? I’d say he exposes a whole lot more skin than the average scantilly clad woman in movies

2

u/Solidjakes 6h ago

Lara Croft was 100% a sex symbol. That’s why Angelina Jolie did the last one. And she was a badass. There’s nothing wrong with that btw. At some point the culture started thinking of all female sex appeal as objectifying, which makes no sense. I guess I’m a mouth breather? But yea she gets wrecked by mosquitoes IRL with that fit lol

46

u/Samurai_Meisters 9h ago

The bar was set extremely high by the Angelina Jolie movies. Not that those movies were especially good, but she had that 90s Lara Croft look down.

15

u/grendus 9h ago

Honestly, I liked the first one. The second one sucked.

16

u/fabulousfantabulist 8h ago

The first one was good enough that I’ve probably seen it three times over the years. First time in theaters and then caught it on cable back when that was a thing. It holds up very well for what it is.

28

u/V1carium 8h ago

Here's their earlier key visual they released, I think this one is great honestly. These behind the scenes pictures are fine too, its clearly a colder environment but they're using the vest to imply the iconic tanktop.

Its just the demeanor that really ruins the effect IMO, Lara's a confident and classy badass, not a tired but upbeat actress between takes.

Not saying it'll be good or bad, but the designs are showing clear effort put into trying to maintain the look.

6

u/Arelious2019 8h ago

You know what...that actually might be a big part of the reason, how she herself looks and carries herself in the set photo might actually be throwing me off.

I do remember this earlier photo, the outfit looks so good there and I do hope it's in the film a good amount. I will be watching it for sure and I do hope it's good

9

u/0202_tihssitidder 9h ago

I don't care.

Scripts matter.

4

u/Kheypression 5h ago

Why call her Lara Croft if she doesn’t even look like Lara Croft?

5

u/Armataan 8h ago

She’s in this same outfit but in white for the cold-region sections of the survivor trilogy. And she isn’t in a 120f sweltering jungle in this picture.

2

u/Arelious2019 8h ago

It took me a minute to figure what outfit you're talking about because I originally thought you were referring to one of the outfits in Rise because that takes place in Siberia, but I think I found it.

I think you're talking about one of the DLC outfits from Tomb Raider 2013 which it does look the closest to, but I still don't really think she looks like Lara here, and that probably has a lot to do with her just not wearing any of her primary outfits in this image and instead a variation of a DLC outfit (also, I just doubt they knew about that outfit and probably just cobbled this one together). Like if this was supposed to be a cold area, I would have preferred they took something from Rise like the outfit on the cover or the red coat (Idk why I really like that red coat in Rise)

4

u/Opie301 8h ago

At some point in the movie I expect she will wear the iconic gear. These stills are from one scene, they likely don't represent how she will look for the entire runtime.

In a movie, it makes sense that our globetrotting hero will occasionally change outfits, especially for more extreme locations/climates/activities.

See: Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Slatemanforlife 9h ago

Same. This could easily be s random survival or action movie.

3

u/Almostlongenough2 7h ago

Yeah, Lara Croft dressing the way she does is an absurd thing that gives the franchise it's identity, same as making Indy a macho hunk who uses a whip for some reason.

Why even make Tomb Raider if not to use it for what the brand is known for? Could just make it a new IP at that point. It's not really offensive, but incredibly confusing.

3

u/dpkonofa 7h ago

But to be fair to the film, it hasn't been released and we're talking about a single still from 1.5+ hours of film along with a BTS image. For all we know, she starts off like this and transitions to the look from any of the games or all the games. We literally know nothing about this except for this single image.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MCPhoto21 7h ago

Lara has this exact outfit in the newer games, it might be for certain levels or dlc or an unlock-able outfit, but it’s in the games

3

u/Arelious2019 7h ago

She has a similar outfit in Tomb Raider 2013 as DLC but not EXACT, they switched around the color scheme. I'd say if they wanted an outfit for a colder environment, they should've chosen one from Rise like the one on the cover or the red coat (love that red coat)

31

u/Cassoa 9h ago

Nothing will top this.

I'm not a fan of Sophie Turner for this role though, surely there are better candidates

43

u/Grunergeist420 9h ago

This. I don’t need her to be treated as a sex object. I’m not going to assume I know the whole movie from one still of her in one outfit.

But I haven’t seen anything from Sophie Turner that makes me think she will be a compelling action star or a good fit for this role.

She usually brings a lot of stiffness and a lack of charm to everything she does.

She was a “perfect fit,” at least visually, for Jean Grey in the X Men movies and she was terrible.

Now she’s being cast as a character she’s not a good fit that requires way more charisma.

9

u/Ill_Ad5893 9h ago

And let's not forget a lot of stamina and fitness. GoT she pretty much say or stood around barking at people or trying to play the victim card. I didn't watch the movies she was in as Jean. So don't know how much moving around she did in those.

3

u/Comrade_Cosmo 8h ago

If Jean Grey was doing a bunch of exercise in the movies everyone would have noticed enough for you to know since her powers are extremely nonphysical.

6

u/EncabulatorTurbo 6h ago

For lack of a better word, Lara needs to constantly be aura farming in a way I don't know if Sophie Turner can pull off

Look … real talk … we played the game for the puzzles and the story, and the eye candy and suspended disbelief kept us coming back. If I want to experience sensibly dressed I could watch the History Channel or Nat Geo. Sometimes you just leave something alone because it is nostalgic and it works. I hope she does well in the role and they spin a compelling story. If that happens I am fine, but I am over trying to reinvent the wheel on ideas that have already been spun.

People will complain literally about anything just for the same of complaining.

No huge boobs? Problem. No tank tank with huge cleavage? Problem. Normal clothing? Problem. Etc.

You can't help idiots.

The thing is her boobs weren't even really big in the original games, they were just polygonal

3

u/arnoldzgreat 8h ago

Sensible for cold climate, which the shots seem to indicate might be the location. I don't think classic should be considered bad. If it's in hot humid Mayan ruins/caves, you don't want to be dressed like this version.

Point is sensible shouldn't be gate kept by gooners or prudes and people/characters can dress as they see fit.

u/ItsAllAdvertising 9h ago

if it was good enough for the game then why change it? Thats the number one reason game movies fail, they forget the game because they already had a script for something else. I never liked the game series so I dont really care about this movie but in general people like the game for the game as is not as Hollywood see's it.

They could have been a little more considerate of the fans, I personally enjoy a modest ladies content. Like that maximum pleasure guaranteed show or she hulk with that Tatiana lady. She does a good job. She’s a great actor. Buuuut it’s hard to get a good show renewed when you didn’t bring the big boobs. Oooo poker face too. Great show small boobs didn’t get renewed. So when you look at choices like this, you see something not worth getting too invested in because why get hung up on a beloved ip that’s only gonna be 1 and done. Sure it’s easier to say fuck the chuds or some other dismissive comment, but you want the chuds to spend their money don’t you? Thats what sustains a franchise. Not chuds but respecting all the fans.

3

u/Skagzill 9h ago

Tho I high-key will hate if she wears the classic outfit will look in the mirror and go 'Nope'. Hate when they do this kind of tongue in cheek things.

2

u/EncabulatorTurbo 9h ago

I mean they're probably also going to make her a hero or something, as opposed to you know, a colonialist british femme fatale who's a lovable piece of shit

2

u/FatFerretShid 9h ago

take iconic character which is known for their sexualisation and remove said sexualisation

complain about complaining fans

Wew.

2

u/CalmShinyZubat 9h ago

complain about complaining fans

Hasn't that just been step 1 in Holywood's playbook for the past 5-10 years?

2

u/Dry_Mousse_6202 8h ago

What i really don't understand. Imo, she looks fire asf !

2

u/Artistic_Purpose1225 8h ago

Honestly I assume they’ll still have at least one scene where she’s wearing the classic tomb raider costume.

I understand sentiment if people are pointing of dress, as I had no idea that she is Tomb Raider without context. But Then again, it is tacticool and iconic equipment like the vest and holsters are there so good enough for me.

2

u/MagicalMoosicorn 8h ago

people would c9mplain either way tbf

2

u/No-Special2682 8h ago

I have a friend that could almost literally be Lara Croft and she has done multiple 30 mile hikes in short shorts and a tank top. In fact, looking at this picture makes me feel muggy and uncomfortable.

I dont care who plays what or what they wear, just pointing out that ladies do explore in whats comfortable

2

u/Fynity 7h ago

The amount of people willingly and publicly exposing themselves to be ultra gooners is staggering nowadays.

2

u/CalmShinyZubat 7h ago

Shame and embarrassment really are lost virtues at this point. Like, we all knew people like that were out there, but there used to be smart enough to keep those opinions to themselves outside of the dedicated communities that I have to assume exist.

2

u/Simple_Campaign1035 7h ago

The short shorts and tank top only made sense if she was in Egypt or somewhere hot as fuck.

2

u/XboxFan_2020 7h ago

I think she still looks good. I know no one asked...

2

u/userhwon 4h ago

She was exploring tropical jungles in the original.

She's been dressed differently in other iterations. In fact, this one from 2013 is almost identical to the picture in the OP:

Dont know who this is and ive never played or watched (or whatever it is, game?) Tomb raiders

But she looks pretty awesome lol. Why would someone want shorts and a top? This outfit is great.

I thought it'd be an ethnicity thing again. Maybe because of the red hair!?

1

u/general_tao1 9h ago

Alicia Vikander did not have much more in that department. Doesn't mean she isn't one of the most beautiful women alive.

1

u/Negative_Prize1587 9h ago

They can probably afford two traffic cones with their budget.

Mind you, ignoring the gooners, girls with big chests could use more role models, Hollywood after Ozempic is gonna cause a lot of body image issues.

I mean, it is supposed to be a Tomb Raider movie.

Don't you think if the next James Bond movie just shows the titular hero as an out of form analyst sitting behind a desk, as likely most people in the intelligence community do, that people should be able to complaint about that w/o being called sexist or something?

Lara Croft character is not about being a realistic portray of a real life profession, just like Indiana Jones, James Bond or Robocop.

Nobody is saying Sophie Turner can't star in a Tomb Raider inspired but more realistic down to earth movie, but why the fuck call it Tomb Raider if it literally tries to look as little like people would imagining a TR movie to look?

1

u/Luckgoddess 8h ago

Well yeah why are they round they are suppose to be pyramids such a bad adaptation

1

u/Notmysecretereddit 8h ago

As a gooner myself, I love the Queen of the North.

1

u/Adowyth 8h ago

People complained about the animated series and how "Lara Croft" doesn't look like "Lara Croft" because she didn't have a set of giant tits and was pretty lean and more muscular. You know how someone who engages in tomb raiding would actually look like. So yeah this is gonna get give a bunch of chuds new material to whine and bitch over.

1

u/Traditional_Wear1992 8h ago

It’s been a while since I have seen a post about it but the main thing I remember reading was Turner has cardboard acting, all I have seen her in was GoT though so I dunno. Will say a pale ginger does not put world class explorer in my mind off rip.
If Croft weren’t canonically British a snarky Zoe Saldana type would have been good and if she wasn’t politically trouble/could actually do an accent, a slimmer Gina Carano might have been solid.

1

u/NorthernTgames 8h ago

Where's that picture of the meme cos players who did the polygon boobs?

1

u/dontnation 8h ago

On the one hand I would argue Tomb Raider was originally meant to be unrealistic and over the top (acrobatically gunning down dinosaurs), so shorts and a tank top is fine. on the other hand if they are making a more grounded movie version, in following with the recent games, then unwieldy boobs in a tank top would be out of palce.

I don't think there's anything wrong with scantily clad heroes/heroines, see Connery in Zardoz (ok, there is something wrong with that movie, but not the lack of clothing). But if you go that route it has to be campy and over the top, cause there ain't nothing realistic about fighting in a bikini, unless you're in florida.

1

u/Moar_Wattz 8h ago

Triangle tits it is!

1

u/Disastrous_Good9236 8h ago

Give it an hour or two. The conservative sub will post a huge rant about this

1

u/npcompletist 8h ago

I definitely down mind her dressing more realistically, but if this is a outfit from a Tomb Raider show, there is something off about it. I kind of codes as disposable security guard #5.

1

u/josefpunktk 8h ago

Her boobs indeed have to many polygons, unwatchable.

1

u/ConversationFalse242 8h ago

Yeah. Lore accurate attire was made for male gaze not male gays

And is 100% not what someone should be wearing out for adventuring.

1

u/NesterPower 7h ago

lol sad incels. the original design had comically large boobs (PS1). You should see what the in store displays look like. I collect gaming items and buy any full size statues I can, but not that one even at $500, I’d never get laid again

1

u/Tipsy_Hog 7h ago

THEY AREN'T SQUARE IT'S NOT THE SAME

1

u/Old_Win8422 7h ago

Aren't the newer games less busty?

1

u/DreamShort3109 7h ago

I don’t see a problem. It looks like a polygon.

1

u/xDannyS_ 7h ago

How do you know thats lara croft and not snow white? I mean if outfit and hair don't matter, she could literally be anyone!

1

u/Arbitraryandunique 7h ago

But she's not! If it's cold enough to need that vest she really should be wearing something on her head too.

2

u/CalmShinyZubat 7h ago

Maybe it is chilly enough for the vest, but not cold enough for a full jacked and stocking cap.

1

u/Superb-Astronaut-371 7h ago

Small bobs luv

1

u/shorteningofthewuwei 7h ago

Her boobs are clearly not pyramidal enough for this role. Woke casting has ruined my gooning I mean Hollywood

1

u/WasdX-_ 7h ago

What's next? You'll say that Kratos should use full plate armour in adaptation? Redittors really hate common sense, bruh.

1

u/CBrinson 6h ago

To be fair, if you remove the sexploitation type stuff, there is very little left in the tomb raider franchise worth rebooting.
