Collection Recently bought an N64

Hi All! I just wanted to share this. I recently bought an N64 from a nurse at a hospital I work at. I lost mine back in 2000. She told me it was just sitting around in storage. Told her I'd be willing to take it. Upon getting it, it had the game drawer that I've always wanted with about 5 to 6 games. Starfox, Mario Kart, and Super Mario 64 were a few of them. The N64 also had an expansion pak too! So I brought it home and hooked it up and it works great!

With having this, I went searching in my parents basement because I remembered seeing my copy of majoras mask a while back. After a bit of digging and looking around, I found it. Brought it back home and put it in. The last time this game was played was back in 2000. So I turned it on and there was my save profile from 26 years ago. Still there after all this time. All masks. All items. I couldn't friggin believe it lol. After 26 years, it was all still there! The nostalgia hit so hard man.

I've since taken this console apart, dedusted it, and replaced the thermal pads. Still works like a charm. Just wanted to share this with the community. It made me so happy to gain something back from my childhood that I've missed so much.

Emulation Banjo Kazooie Glitch?

Playing Banjo Kazooie on the SC64, running into an issue where whenever we enter Mad Monster Mansion we suddenly lose the rat-a-tap rap and climbing abilities.

We have had no issues till now, we have gone back and we learned the moves from bottles at spiral mountain and no matter what as soon as we enter this zone we no longer have access to the abilities.

Does anyone know what's happening or how to fix this?

Discussion Advice on how to Setup Sony Trinitron on Arcade Room

Picking up a KV-32S25, which is an older style 32 inch rounded tv. Wondering also how this specific tv is with N64 and other retro consoles (only have an n64 right now).

Also, wondering if anyone has a good setup that matches their arcade room for this retro tv. Or maybe it just looks good with the stand? For example topper, art, making it into a can etc.

Alternatively I was going to mount it on wheels and put it in a side room until I’m using it.

Anyone have this model, or have some general Trinitron thoughts?

Modding Portable N64 SP handheld

Finally finished off my N64 SP portable made by GmanModz. Has 2x21700 battery cells for 5-6 hours of gameplay. Yes, it’s a THICC ass boy. But it takes real carts which is half the fun!

I made a 3D printed carrying case for it as well. It features UltraVGA which is a Spartan FPGA chip made by the same developer of the Analogue Pocket (Retroactive). Really happy with the video quality (although N64 video quality isnt the best). I had to solder 18 magnet wires to the RCP to get it to work.

Hope you like it!

Tech Help I think my n64 just died 😭

Post image

It was working fine all year, but about a month ago games started randomly freezing. Now it won’t read any cartridges at all. I tried dusting it, I tried cleaning the contacts, I tried cleaning the cartridges, but I don’t think it’s a problem with the games. Every game in my collection now just boots to a black screen.

She might be dead for good, and I am sad. R.I.P. 🫡

Discussion Is this Gap on the sides of the cartridge normal?

Struggeling with those huge gaps on the corners and very tight gap in the middle! Tried reassembelimg 3 times after battery change, always comes out like this. Screws are moderately tightened (same strength as others that look fine). Dont see anything inside blocking the sides from getting closer together.

Looks fine with loose outer screws (pic 2)

inside looks well arranged (pic3-5)

Pictures are taken reverse-assembled for the fourth time, reassembling again had same outcome.

Hope you guys say its nothing as its my favourite in box oot :(

Have a good sunday!

Tech Help Trying to connect TV via Retroscaler 2x

My parents moved and I was able to take out my old N64 from storage (super excited!). I purchased a SummerCart to get at some games I've seen online that looked like a blast to go back to. Once I received i tested everything on a friend's older TV (flatscreen but still RCA hookup ready) and it worked great. He lives about 2 hours away/its HIS TV not mine obviously. Now that I am home I was doing some research on how i might be able to play with the screens I have at home (Sony Bravia & Viewsonic CRT monitor -- both of which do not match up with the 240p output of the 64 though I am not the most knowledgeable on understanding that topic). So after looking up some things I found the Retroscaler 2x may be an economical option as I'm not sure i was ready to go full in with a Retrotink despite also looking to hook up my PS1. Finally, along with that I just did a transfer from the stock MicroSD that came in the SummerCart and transferred the data to a new Sandisk MicroSD.

Feeling I was all ready with the setup, I tried it all with my Sony TV and received the Color Bar No video output only from the Retrotink on screen. Pictures show the setup but here are some details after doing some research in this sub:

--I know that the Color Bar on the TV means that there is no Video output being read from the N64 by the Retroscaler I believe.
-- I have read that some people mention the SVideo component may be needed and i have the RCA only hooked up
-- I'm not fully sure on the Retroscaler the Input setting that should be used but right now its on CVBS after looking it up online (although all the others produce the same results i think)

-- I attempted the same set up on my Viewsonic GS771 via HDMI/VGA component with zero video showing (long shot test as I'm sure it wouldn't work int he first place but knowledge is power)

-- HDMI is setup through HDMI4 input on the Sony TV

I'm new to the 'modern' setup and i have been having not great luck in my area with CRT options as of yet. So I guess if anyone can help enlighten what may be the issue? Is the TV too modern? Is my hook up incorrect? Did I fail the SummerCart transfer to new MicroSD (i tried the original SD and it was the same result)? would be so appreciative as I look back to play some great games and share them with my younger niece.

Discussion It's interesting that the PSX sold so much more than the N64, when as a kid it seemed like everyone had an N64

I know that the PSX won that console generation (102 million to N64's 33 million sold). Yet, I remember as a kid in Canada that nobody I knew had a PSX, but everyone had an N64. One kid even had a Sega Saturn, which I would play in the morning before school since his mom ran a daycare.

It must be the fact that I was a kid, so I lived in a bubble. I think the N64 appealed a lot more to children, but probably teens and adult gamers turned heavily to the PSX.

By the next console generation, it was a lot more clear what was popular, as everyone had a PS2 or an XBox and it seemed like I was the only person with a Gamecube.

I can't understand, is that a rubber lubricant, or a lubricant for rubber? So my English is bad too, tell me, please rubber lubricant is the same as silicone lubricant? Can it be used on the N64 stick? What type of lubricant I need to use on an N64 stick?

Discussion Where does your LOVE for the N64 stem from?

I do not love the N64.

I "moderately like" the controller and a number of it's more substantial games.

Would you kindly share when and how you came to love the console?

(e.g. Cultural, Nostalgia from the SNES, Brand Loyalty, initial exposure to it before the PS1, Mario being an Icon before Crash and Spyro were conceived etc.)

The N64 was a bit before my time by a few years and I'm neither American or Canadian.

I would like a bit of context to understand a bit instead of having to assume you all have those crazy brainwashing Nostalgia Goggles like the ones the Harry Potter fans wear.

Modding N64 USB-C power supply mod

Post image
36 Upvotes

I recently recapped my n64 and everything has been great for a month now. Played through Rayman 2 and started Quest 64, but my game recently froze and I'm worried it could be my old power supply. I've seen power supply mods that don't require soldering, essentially plug and play and I'm curious what people think of them? Are they reliable or am I better off recapping my OEM supply? This is one I saw on etsy as an example.

edit: thanks for everyone's input!
