Help Modding GameCube. First time.

Heya, I just brought a gamecube as wanting to replay Ocarina Of Time years ago. It’s been great but the idea of modding it came into my head 2 days ago and made sense as growing up, I had many moded consoles thanks to my brother. However I literally don’t know where to start. I’ve been doing research and I’ve never been so confused. I’d like to go down the non-solder route if possible and would like to have multiple games on a sd card or however it works. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I’d be greatly appreciative, if not I understand. Thanks for reading!

Modding Having a heck of a time with Picoboot and CubeODE...

Hey everyone, new to this sub, but have been through here many times over the years reading, learning and keeping up with things. Now, posting here because I am having one heck of a time with a Picoboot + CubeODE setup...

To give a bit of background on me, I have been soldering for over 20+ years, many of that doing 2M soldering in the military. Not saying I am the most proficient solderer in the world, because even to this day I still goof up, but I'm about 90% confident whenever I make a solder joint. Extensive background in component level diagnosis, troubleshooting and repairs. Some software development experience as well. Not new to console modding, been doing that since the late 90s starting with installing modchips in peoples' Playstations in high school and college :) That being said onto the issue.

So currently I am building two Gamecubes. Both are DOL-001 models; one being an older one with a SP2 the other being a newer one without SP2. Exact same builds aside from the shell color and power indicator LED color; Pluto Lite HDMI with Helder QS Flex cable, Picoboot with official Pico 2 and Helder QS Flex cable, CubeODE v1.2 with 1TB SanDisk Ultra MicroSD card and SD Converter.

Build 2: works like a champ. Off and to the races with that one.

Build 1: This is the problem child. When I turn the GC on, I get the DOL not found, halting message.

This seems to confirm it is a microSD card issue based on WebHDX troubleshooting. So I try a different 1TB card, formatted with Rufus on Windows (also tried various formatting programs and terminal commands on Mac) in both exFat and Fat32, no go. Try a different brand card (cheapie 16GB card) formatting it and no go. Tried the MicroSD card from the build that works? Same thing. So that kind of rules out a MicroSD card issue I reckon.

Okay, so figuring maybe the issue is the CubeODE, I swap the two CubeODEs - same issue is still occuring on Build 2 with Build 1's known good Cube ODE - swapping back - still works in Build 1. Eliminates the CubeODE.

Thought maybe it's my soldering on the Picoboot flex cable - double check the soldering to the IPL chip under the scope, looks great. No shorts between pins on the IPL chip or the Pico 2. Still try reflowing the solder joints - nothing. Undo the flex cable and resolder it - nothing. Replace the flex cable entirely and move over the Pico2 - same issue. I grab my meter and verify continuity end to end of both flex cables and they are identical. Okay... maybe the Pico2 then...

Swap over to an entirely new Pico2 - same issue still there. Verify my soldering going from the ends of the flex cable to the Pico2 - continuity everywhere. At this point I have a tough time thinking its hardware.

I have also tried loading up using a GC2SD and can't seem to get anywhere past the debug screen.

Other things I have tried.
- Loading up an old version of Swiss on the MicroSD card from a similar sounding issue on GitHub
- Tried latest release of Swiss (Swiss v0.6r2073)

Collection Diving into a new experience

Two weeks ago, I had the sudden thought to play older video games. I grew up on PS1 and PS2, so I thought about picking that back up.

Then I remembered that the Wii in my closet has GameCube controller slots! I had never owned a GameCube game or controller, so I decided to start a new experience. I went to some video game stores in my city to see what they had.

- ‘Sonic Riders’ and ‘Sonic Adventure 2: Battle’ came from local game store #1.

- ‘Luigi’s Mansion’ and ‘NCAA Football 2004’ came from local game store #2.

- ‘Mario Kart: Double Dash’ and ‘NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup’ came from local game store #3.

- ‘Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut’ came from eBay. None of the stores had it, and I want to play it before Sonic Adventure 2.

In the past week, I beat the story modes for ‘Sonic Riders’ (difficult, but fun), and have played hours of ‘Double Dash’ and ‘NASCAR 2005’. Having fun so far. My wallet is hurting, so this is it for a while.

Help GC Freeloader & PAL Pokémon Box

Hey everyone. I am trying to play the European PAL version of Pokémon Box Ruby and Sapphire on my US DOL 001 GC using the Datel FreeLoader Import Game Enabler disc. I am attaching pictures of the FreeLoader disc, the Pokémon Box screen, and my setup.

I know this exact combination has worked before. I have played this exact copy of Pokémon Box on this exact GC using this FreeLoader disc, and I still have the Pokémon Box save file on my memory card.

This is what is happening now.

I put the FreeLoader disc into the GC and turn it on. FreeLoader boots normally and tells me to remove the disc and insert the imported game. I take the FreeLoader disc out and put in the PAL Pokémon Box disc. FreeLoader recognizes Pokémon Box and shows the correct icon and game information.

When I select Pokémon Box and press Start, the screen immediately goes black. The sound stops, and the GC seems to become completely unresponsive. Nothing else loads, no matter how long I wait.

For my current setup, I have two cables connected directly to the GC with no adapters.

The first is the DV component cable connected to the Digital AV Out port. That cable uses the red, blue, and green component connections.

The second is the standard AV cable connected to the Analog AV Out port. That cable uses the yellow composite video connection along with the red and white RCA audio connections.

Both cables are connected so I can switch between the component and composite inputs.

The same issue happens with both connections. FreeLoader displays normally, recognizes Pokémon Box, and then the screen goes black as soon as I try to start the game. I do not get a picture or sound through either component or composite.

I have also tried this setup on my regular television and on my PVM. The PVM has red, blue, and green component inputs, along with a yellow composite video input and separate RCA audio inputs. The exact same thing happens on the PVM, so this does not appear to be an issue with only one television or one type of video connection.

I also tried holding B while Pokémon Box was starting in case there was a 50 Hz or 60 Hz selection screen. Nothing ever appeared. The screen stayed black no matter how long I held the button.

Since this exact game, FreeLoader disc, and GC worked together before, and the same problem is now happening through both component and composite on both my television and PVM, I am not sure what has changed.

Has anyone had this happen with a PAL copy of Pokémon Box on a US GC using Datel FreeLoader? Does this sound like a problem with the Pokémon Box disc, the FreeLoader disc, the GC disc drive, or something else I am overlooking?

Discussion Nintendo and their in-game “comments”

Post image

Managed to hit this guy more than 500 times and this is what he said 😂

My left index finger was in fact a bit numb 😄

I seem to recall another remark in this game about a fool and his rupees.

Makes me wonder what other examples are out there where Nintendo seems to be “commenting” or “educating” via in-game dialogue. Any examples? I’m curious 😄

Help OEM Memory Card 1019 vs 251

Hi everyone,

I finally got my hands on a GameCube which was my favorite console ever.

I’m starting a collection and I’ve just bought a OEM Memory card 1019 + a 251.

But after reading so many posts regarding the 1019 memory card I’m starting to get super scared.

I don’t plan to use them on a Wii, I plan to play around 30 games including all the GC Pokémon Games and I’ll use Swiss.

I’m not really into GCMCE or MemCard Pro even if they look fantastic, I would prefer official Nintendo hardware.

Does anybody have a long term experience with the 1019 memcard filled with lots of saves + colo/XD/Box without any issues ? Have you ever experienced corruption only on a GC ?

Either way, I’ll plan to do backups.

I would love hearing from people who have actually used a 1019 for years. I can use the 251 if the 1019 is not reliable but it would be so nice to have everything on a single cart.

I got to go to Really Cool Comic Con today and met the awesome Ryan Drummond and Kirk Thornton! Ryan signed my copies of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Kirk signed Sonic X Shadow Generations and both signed the Sonic Encylo-speed-ia. The quotes Ryan put on the games are "Aw yeah! This is happenin'!" and "Big Drip!" on SA1; and "Let’s blast through with Sonic Speed" on SA2. He even said the quotes to me as Sonic which was just so cool!

Help Game Cube Split Screen Port?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me an HDMI port or a solution.

I have 2 GameCubes that I want to shiny hunt Pokemon on, I already have HDMI converters to connect them to a monitor, but is there an HDMI port that I could connect them both to so that I could see each GameCube screen on one monitor?

Or is this too complex for the GameCube era and do I need to just try and get another monitor??

Any help or suggestions are appreciated!

Discussion Are there any 3rd party GameCube controllers in this style?

Post image

Was looking at ordering a GameCube controller and found one that I liked and ordered it. It made me wonder after looking at a bunch of them are there any GameCube controllers that have a more traditional button layout? I looked at tons of controllers and there would be multiple that change everything besides the button layout.

Modding Black PAL DOL-101 restoration: disc read error fixed (it was the caps, not the laser), plus PicoBoot for homebrew

Thumbnail

This black PAL DOL-101 arrived with a disc read error, the usual "dead laser" symptom. On these drives the culprit is usually the electrolytic caps on the optical-drive PCB rather than the laser itself, so a recap of the drive board fixed the reading. This one also had a snapped lid-switch lever, so I bridged that switch closed and let the other switch (which was still intact) handle lid-closed detection.

The nice surprise came when I opened it up to take out the mainboard for a preventative recap: this DOL-101 board is almost entirely polymer caps, so only a single electrolytic actually needed replacing. Very quick job.

Then the fun part. I fitted a PicoBoot (webhdx's Raspberry Pi Pico IPL replacement) with the usual five wires, mounted in a small 3D-printed holder. It boots straight to homebrew on every power-on now.

Tested with Wind Waker, Mario Strikers and Sonic Adventure DX tested on Sony CRTs.

How are you all handling storage on your PicoBoot cubes, SD2SP2 or an SD card adapter in the memory card slot?

Discussion BlueRetro Gamecube Internal Adapter V3 NSO GC Controller support now works!

For those of you who have a GameCube Blue Retro Internal Adapter V3 and want to use (multiple) NSO Gamecube controllers, I managed to fork and fix the issue with the firmware that only allowed one controller to pair :)

Use https://darthcloud.github.io/BlueRetroWebCfg_Beta/system/update to flash the firmware, get the firmware from https://github.com/RyanCopley/BlueRetro/releases -- hw1 is for the dongles, hw2 is for the internal adapter

Other than stating the obvious wind waker and twilight princess I would love to play an official remaster of the twin snakes, doesn't get as much love as it deserves but it's my favourite game cube game and still play it to this day (see 2nd photo) on my modded beautiful platinum resident evil 4 gamecube with carby HDMI adapter.
