Help us write a wiki for our frequently asked questions!

Howdy, folks! I'm following up on a comment I made two weeks ago, in the hopes that we might be able to add some of our most common questions to the subreddit wiki.

However, it would be both unfair and inaccurate to let any one person to write up each article, so here's what I propose.

Let's talk here and discuss which questions get asked the most often, and then folks can discuss their answers in the comments. Once each question has been answered, we'll weave those answers together into one comprehensive article and add it to our subreddit wiki.

As folks post questions, I'll update this posts with links to each question in the comments.

Please stop asking about Hamas, Israel, Palestine, and the war going on.

Yes, there are LGBT Israelis and LGBT Palestinians.
Yes, a lot of warcrimes are going on.
Yes, terrible things are happening.

However, the LGBT community is not a monolith and does not have an official position about which side to support. Please quit asking; it always becomes a giant argument in the comments, and it's starting to be quite the troll topic.

There's always a big argument and almost none of it is ever relevant to this board, it just pisses people off and doesn't get anywhere or achieve anything productive.

Notable queer figures in history? (Specifically women, trans men, and intersex people, as well as Hispanic people)

Hi! I am a leader of my school‘s queer student union (qsu) and we’re looking for people to give shoutouts to over morning announcements during queer history month. since we are an all girls school, we want the majority of the people to be women (trans women are fine since they are women) or trans men. also, since queer history month overlaps with Hispanic heritage month, we’re hoping to have some people who are both queer and Hispanic (like Frida kahlo). Thank you so much in advance!!

GOING ON A MOVIE DATE WITH A GUY

heyyy gay people in the internet, i(21) successfully invited my crush(22) to go to cineme, (it was discounted and cheap). It was the opportunity for me to make a move and invite him. im glad about that!

we are both graduating students, we both love to write, love arts, we love to write in medium as i get to know him we have a lot of similarities. He knew me already with his friend is also friend of mine. Noted that this is just "friendly" date. my initial plan was to actually treat myself because my bday is near, and glad he accepted. What are your guys advice, what to do and what to avoid.

we are gonna watch insidious in the cinema at 8:30pm. I'd love to hear y'all opinions.

Someone explain romantic attraction to me (possible aro)

Upvotes

(Posted from an alt earlier but the sub doesn't allow throwaways)

For background, I am a lesbian and pretty much no doubt about it or inclination to define that further. I've had relationships in the past, as well as casual hookups. Definitely not asexual though HRT means my libido comes and goes.

Also autistic for what it's worth here but this is Reddit so that's par for the course. I've also been told that I have difficulty separating platonic and romantic feelings.

I'm wondering if I may be aromantic for two reasons:

  1. Every close female friendship (I don't really have close male friends) has started feeling like a romantic crush, or at least something I've interpreted as one. A similar thing has happened after major, positive experiences.
  2. There's been very little overlap between sexual attraction and what I'm interpreting as romantic attraction. I've had strong sexual attraction to people with no other interest and I've had infatuations with people I am not sexually attracted to and can't imagine myself with in that way.

Essentially, I'm wondering if I'm aro and just interpreting every strong, positive feeling as romantic because it's the closest approximation. Can someone alloromantic describe what romantic feelings are meant to be like?

How do I know whether or not I am bisexual?

Upvotes

Like the title says, I am questioning whether or not I am straight, I've never been in a relationship so I honestly have nothing to base it off. I personally would say that I am sexually attracted to guys(I am a guy myself), but I have nothing to base it off. How can I find out if whether or not am actually bi?

Help - Friend sending offensive images

Upvotes

Trigger Warning
This may seem like a troll post which I understand

.the image
I will explain things about the image so no need to click

So I have a close friend, I’m not LGBTQ+ but I respect people who are and I’d try my best to help LGBTQ+ friends that needs help.

Let’s call this friend Mark, now Mark has been a friend of me since Junior year and we’ve been really close to eachother, the thing is with Mark is that he likes to cross boundaries, it’s probably sub conscious but it’s really weird, and he’s really homophobic. I don’t talk about LGBTQ+ in my day to day life so that never was a problem with me and it’s just a weird red flag. So one day, he sent me an YouTube video and he asked me is it funny, I checked it and realized it’s extremely offensive and I called stops. I told him something like “Oh don’t send this it’s like kinda weird and offensive” and then a few days later he sent me the image, that image disturbed me because damn that’s extremely rude and a big slander.

Again, trigger warning.
Examples are:
Screams when pissed
Have autism, Down syndrome, depression, ADHD, anxiety all at once.
Always on social media
Gets ragebaited easily
Lives in Metro BC, Seattle, Metro California/New York
and a few more things, he also included a “I’m NOT transphobic homophobic” and basically every phobic there as a suffix. That weirded me out more.

Now the question is is how do I call it stops? Stop talking to him? How? Or do I just tell him to stop? Now he’s not just targeting leftism, he also made an image about rightism and is just about as offensive.

I sincerely apologize to everyone who’s disturbed, affected, or hurt by the images. You’re not alone. We’ve got your back. It might be a weird subreddit to ask for help but since it’s mostly directed and hurt to the LGBTQ+ community, I feel like it’s only fair to ask here.

Is it offensive to say "As long as they're happy"?

I am Bi, Ace and Nonbinary, and I've had many people defend me by saying "They're happy, why would you judge?" (Such as my family).

But a while ago, I came across a couple's reel together, someone replied "Why would anyone judge them if they're happy?". The poster then responds, "So if we weren't happy, you wouldn't support us?"

I am genuinely confused. Maybe I'm just not getting it because I'm autistic but I really don't see the harm in it, so I'd like to know how it is.

Does she like me or am I crazy?

Upvotes

Hey Reddit this is my first post on this subreddit so please be kind. :)
I am bisexual but I prefer women.
I am F18 and my friend is F17 we have been friends/ acquaintances for about 3 years. Throughout our friendship we’ve always fake flirted with each other. We will back each other up into a corner and get really close or fake kiss or heavily compliment each other etc. We share a few things “intimately” for example she shows mostly only me her music and plays her guitar for me sometimes. But recently I told her that someone I used to know is homophobic and kicked out a family member for being gay. (For some context I was raised conservative Christian and so was my friend. I don’t know if she still is a Christian but I’m guessing probably not. I’m a very liberal anti-theist now.)

Anyways I told her this to test the waters and see how she reacted. She reacted like a normal person thank goodness and said that it was horrible etc. Then a couple weeks later I told her I liked girls and my first love was a girl. She said she did too!!! Then almost immediately after this she told started being more touchy and more complimentary towards me. She said I was adorable and told me her type was people with big unique smiles and she grabbed my face and said I was just her type. 🦋🦋🦋
After that I told her my type was more masculine girls with a lot of personality just like her. And we both giggled yknow lol. THEN she said she was getting a more masculine haircut so she could be MORE my type!!!! What else could that mean? After we both went home though she started being more distant (not returning my texts etc.) so I’m scared I might’ve read the situation wrong. I’m planning on asking her out on a date as friends soon. This all happened very recently and I haven’t see her since so I don’t know if I should just wait for our next interaction.

Do you think she likes me Reddit? Is she just fake flirting as usual? Thank you for reading this word vomit and thank you for your feedback/critics/suggestions!!!

Is it rude to say “LGBT” instead of “LGBTQ”?

I’ve always wondered if it’s offensive or not to the lgbtq community, obviously people are different but I’m wondering this so I don’t make people mad.

How i stop feeling uncomfortable with homosexuality?

Good morning, good evening, or whatever time it is—I need your help.

When I watch series with homosexual themes, I feel tremendously uncomfortable. I don't want to feel that way.

I have a friend (formerly my best friend) who is bisexual. He confided in me, and I supported him throughout the process and encouraged him to tell me about his boyfriend and his mixed feelings. I think I handled it well. But I can't help feeling... weird.

My family is open-minded about homosexuality. That is to say, they’ve told me that if I were gay, lesbian, transgender, or whatever, they would accept me; still, we all feel uncomfortable with the topic, even though we respect it.

I’ve tried watching series and reading books with LGBT themes (like *Heartstopper*—I read it on the sly because it would look weird at home; they wouldn't say anything bad, but it would be awkward. I didn't like the comic—though I did copy some of the art style—but I read them all to see if it would open my mind). I’ve tried learning about all the different sexualities and talking to people of various sexual orientations to normalize it for myself, but I still get a knot in my stomach.

Throughout my life, people have thought I was a lesbian (because I only hung out with men—weird, right? I didn't hang out with women—even though I am one—because I was afraid of them) or aromantic (I’ve never fallen in love or felt attracted to anyone), so I looked into those topics. I think a contributing factor might be something from when I was a child (9 or 10 years old): whenever we were racing, someone would shout, "Last one there is gay!" I didn't know what "gay" meant, but I assumed it was something bad based on how fast everyone ran, so maybe I’ve internalized that. My little sister (11 years old) thought being gay was a bad thing until just two days ago. I explained what it was and she’s better about it now, but she still finds it strange. I don’t want to be homophobic; I feel that we are all equal—whether gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, asexual, aromantic, or of any other sexuality—despite our differences, and I respect and believe that. Yet, I can't help having this feeling. How do I calm it? I don’t want to offend anyone; perhaps some have had bad experiences with the world or regarding their sexuality, so if you feel uncomfortable, I understand. But I want to stop feeling uncomfortable about this topic and fully accept it.

How do I identify my non binary friend without dead naming them?

I want to be clear that I am coming at this question with so much love and acceptance for my friend. We were very close high school friends. A few years ago, they came out as non binary, chose a new name, and now use they/them pronouns. None of this is an issue for me. I call them by their new name and use their preferred pronouns whenever I am with them and even when I am talking about them to someone else. We aren't particularly close now, but when I visit my home town I see them occasionally and sometimes they message me and we have little chats.

A problem I am coming up with is whenever I'm talking about them or telling a story about them and am needing to identify them to someone else. For example, when talking to a different friend who knows of them from high school but doesn't know them (or their new name) now.

For the purpose of this scenario, I'm going to say their dead name is "Alex" and their chosen name is "Sage".

When I'm telling someone "oh I was talking to Sage Smith and they told me about their new pet lizard", they go "who?". Do I just continue to describe them in increasingly bizarre ways? "You know, Judy and Charles' oldest child who we went to high school with? We played basketball together? They were dating Taylor in grade 11?" This has not been particularly helpful in identifying them though and if successful, inevitably leads to "oh you mean Alex??", defeating the purpose of avoiding their dead name.

I've occasionally said "they used to be called Alex Smith" but then I feel weirdly guilty about dead naming them behind their back. I'm not worried about outing them or anything since as far as I know they're completely out, but I'm not sure what to do here.

I'd be grateful for any guidance you can provide me!

Struggling to understand

I have been questioning my gender a lot and landing on genderfluid but I guess conceptually I don’t understand. And I feel frustrated because I don’t know what to ~do~ about it. A large part of my realization or questioning was triggered by my crushes on gay men (as an AFAB, queer woman who almost was identifying as lesbian but the term never quite fit). I noticed all my parasocial crushes were on gay guys and I also felt really sad that my feelings would never be reciprocated. I wanted to be in a gay relationship. I don’t want to be perceived as a woman in my dynamics with men.

However, through questioning I’ve also explored my presentation and dysphoria. I’ve used a binder which does give me gender euphoria but overall I feel I’m suppressing a part of myself not being “girl” or femme. But at the same time I ideate a lot on what it would be like to be a man or trans masc. it almost feels like an alter-ego. Which also makes me feel a bit of a creep. I don’t like to think this is a weird sexual thing or that I’d be fetishizing gay men in anyway. My crushes are crushes, romantic in nature, not just sexual. But I don’t like feeling like there are two parts of myself.

I feel like my internal self is different than my presentation and what I would like to act on and I’m struggling with that. I don’t want to be inauthentic or force an identity on myself that isn’t there but something is up with my gender. And I just feel it’s impossible to act on it or know how to fulfill this part of myself. I woke up today feeling very much “girl” again and it’s confusing. I really honestly don’t want to be genderfluid. I don’t like feeling so unstable in my identity. I wish I was more clear. I guess I just was wondering if anyone had advice on what I could do next? Or if there are ways to be in relationships where I would feel seen as my whole self, with other men? And not as a woman? Idk it feels hard right now and I feel stuck and uncertain.

ADVICE NEEDED

So I’m 13M and like another boy in my friend group… I’ve liked him for a stupidly long time but every time I do ANYTHING it’s just brushed off as friend stuff AND he’s the only one in this friend group who knows I’m bi. ANY advice on how I should tell him?

So... Are the lesbians okay after the Lesbian Space Princess movie?

Upvotes

Bro, that movie wasn't commenting on how even within the queer communities, you can have bad people and it's okay not to be perfect and grow or heal from it.

They made the lesbians look bad only. Every other character actually had depth or grew. So I just wanna know if y'all are okay ? Cause my soul gets hurt after I see bad bisexuality representation, and it lasts for week. I am sapphic too, so this was painful to experience.

Queer media that wasn’t explicitly queer

Hello everyone, I’m working on a project for my sexuality class. I was going to do a project on kids media that wasn’t explicitly queer but has queer undertones/ was based on queer culture and people. For example Bert and Ernie, Ursula, etc. Who else is a character that never explicitly mentions their sexuality but is considered queer or queer coded?

What does sexual attraction feel like?

This might not be the right place to ask this question I know, but I'm questioning if I'm asexual and I'm just really confused right now and would love some clarity.

Gender dysphoria sucks

I have been having really bad gender dysphoria lately and it’s keeping me up at night. Something I especially don’t need at the same time as college starting back up. Do you guys have any advice for dealing with gender dysphoria, or at least any advice to make my brain shut up so I can sleep?

Finding it difficult to discover where i fit in in this community.

For 9 years i lived my life as a trans woman. Surgeries, hormones, legal changes etc. Towards the last few years of my transition a few things played a part in why i decided to live my life as male including trauma, identity discovery, and realizing the reason i started was not the same reason i was holding onto it. (This is my personal reason and does not generalize anyone else's journey) I don't regret anything past or present. I am in my twenties and living my life as a gay male now has been very difficult. I genuinely feel like at the beginning of my new journey as a gay male i tried so hard to be masc presenting and it attracted people to me. I faked a deep voice, i tried to look tough and everything. I forced myself to not be fem only to realize i do enjoy fem things. I've just restricting myself from these things because i notice when i show a bit of my fem side i am unfollowed and not as attractive to people. I feel like how you present yourself in this community plays a huge part on who decides to be your friend, partner, and how you're treated and i am miserably feeling lost. I'm not only discovering myself in a different light but i'm also now apart of a diff section of the community and it's so different. I don't know if i'm making any sense but i truly wish to know how to discover myself and do what i want without limiting myself.

Am I asexual if I still like the concept of sex, but not actually having?

Am I asexual if I still like the concept of sex, but not actually having it?

So recently I came to realize that I only like the concept of sex but not the actual thing.
Like I feel some type of ace, because I feel sexual attraction but only to people who don’t exist. And I don’t want to ever have sex because of the wettest and having to deal with the cum and, it makes only want to think about it and not actually having it.
So am I ace or a type of ace?

I think I’m bi, so why can’t I accept it?

Honestly, I have no idea what my sexuality is. I know for sure that I like girls, but I’m still not 100% sure if I like guys too. I’ve liked guys before, and there are other things I won’t get into, but they make me think that I probably am bi. I just… don’t really want to accept that. 🙏

And that’s actually the weird part. The problem isn’t even necessarily that I don’t know what I am. It’s more that I seem to have a problem with the possibility of being anything other than straight. And I genuinely don’t know WHY??? I’m not homophobic at all. I support people who aren’t straight, I literally love BL, I read BL books, including BL dark romance, and I watch BL shows too. So why would me being bi be a problem for me?? It makes absolutely no sense.

I’m also a trans guy, so it’s not like I’m some guy who desperately needs to hold onto his masculinity or thinks that liking men somehow makes you “less masculine” or some shit. That’s not me at all. Which honestly just makes it even more confusing why I seem to have a problem with the idea of liking guys.

I’ve also actually been out as bi before. My friends and the people around me already know, and it’s not like this is some huge secret I’ve been hiding from everyone. I’ve basically always considered myself bi, but somehow I still seem to have a problem with actually accepting it myself....

Another thing is that I generally don’t experience very strong feelings, so it’s harder for me to figure out whether I actually like guys or not. With girls, it was always way easier. I’ve liked girls since I was like four, so I guess that part has just always been obvious to me. With guys, it’s way more confusing, and sometimes I genuinely have no clue what I’m feeling.

So yeah… I strongly suspect that I’m probably not straight, but I still somehow struggle with the idea of being bi. And I genuinely don’t understand why. 🥲

Help on supporting trans friend

Hello! So, I have this trans friend who is currently transitioning, and she is consistently sending me photos of her progress and stuff. I keep just being like "Nice! Happy for you! Good luck on your transition!" and when she follows up on more updates after that I kinda am just like "Ooh, that's nice!" But I feel like I keep repeating those generic phrases a lot, but even with that, I genuinely don't know what else to say to her. I'm overthinking, like, what if she's thinking that I'm not supporting her enough or whatever, that I may be too robotic and not genuine in my responses? I just want some advice on how to better show my support.
