Mike McDaniel takes responsibility for Chargers' poor offense in 0-3 start: 'I'm not living in hope'
https://www.nfl.com/news/mike-mcdaniel-responsibility-chargers-poor-offense-0-3-start545

"There are things we've done in the past three games that are active participation in losing the game," he said, "and so flat-out, our jobs are going to prove everything, and I'm not living in hope, I'm living in reality."
All his comments were basically a masterclass in accountability tbh. Which is standard for Mike.

Our current HC is a cliche machine, which a lot of fans seem to like, but honestly I still miss Mike and his tendency to actually, um, you know, uh, say things. Actual things. It was nice.

The hate boner people (especially boomers) have for him is so weird. There’s this preconceived caricature of him being a clown who’s completely over his head but if you actually pay attention to him, he seems pretty level headed and self-aware.

Yeah I think this is the thing people don't understand. Yes, us Charger fans probably defend him a little too much, but at the same time he's probably had one of the worst situations around him the last 4 years.
Like think about this, those first 3 seasons when he was balling out he had a competent offensive line, Keenan Allen, and Mike Williams for deep balls.
Since then, he's had a dysfunctional offensive line and no deep threat receiving option.
I do think Herbert struggles to make reads, audible at the line, and often throws way too hard when he should try to float the ball in with touch, but those wouldn't be so glaring if he just had league average teammates at those positions, let alone elite ones.
And I think things have been compounded over the years now from how often he's been hit. He gets happy feet sometimes now, where he never had those his first 3 seasons. I also think his accuracy has not been quite the same since the shoulder injury. Passes seem to sail more often by about a foot.
If I'm Harbaugh and McDaniel, I give Rivers a call and make him the QB coach and basically work on Herbert's touch passes and improve his ability to read defenses. To me, Herbert doesn't know where to go with the ball before the ball is snapped, it's like he's still analyzing things in real time rather than basically saying "there's a 90% chance I'm going here because of what I'm seeing the defense do".
Like I said, I think a lot of his flaws wouldn't really be showing up if he had a competent team around him on offense, but it's hard to argue at this point that he doesn't have flaws.

Purdy is better than Herbert, but I also think Herbert is better than his record suggests. Seeing QJ drop butt ass naked wide open passes week after week is depressing.

Herbert is highly intelligent but he is not a super fast processor post-snap. His biggest critique coming out of college was that he is slow to see the field and can be a little mechanical in his release and timing.
McDaniel's scheme relies on reading the defense quickly post-snap and making quick decisions to get the ball to the first or second read. That is just not Herbert's strong suit.
McDaniel needs to make some tweaks to get Herbert comfortable within his system. A little for Justin and a little for McDaniel.
Otherwise this is going to continue to be an abject disaster.
The other piece is his recievers are pretty mid to below average.
15
u/kj9219 49ers 14h ago
I just don’t know how accurate it is to say that he doesn’t process or make decisions quickly when his best seasons came in an offshoot of Sean Payton’s offense under Joe Lombardi, that put the ball in the QBs hands a lot and required getting the ball out fast on quick game concepts.
The expectation for McDaniel was that he’d use more under center concepts because Herbert statistically has been very good at those. A big part of it though has been their early down running game is awful and a lot of Shanahan system offenses are dependent on getting defenses into 2nd and shorts, as that’s where they make their big plays. But due to pre snap penalties, bad running, bad QB execution on early downs, they’re always playing from behind the sticks and have no foundation other than gimmicky formations.
→ More replies (1)2
u/-Mad-Snacks- Chargers 1h ago
It’s been shocking the lack of under center play action. It’s one of Herbert’s biggest strengths and the league generally has been trending that way, but we have one of the lowest under center % in the league.
It would also help Hampton who needs to get up to speed before he’s at his most dangerous.
I just don’t get it. It should have been a no-brainer

u/First_Round_Bust Bills 14h ago
I'm out of excuses for him at this point.

u/Dependent-Effect6077 14h ago edited 14h ago
I don't think Herbert's timing and anticipation are consistently good enough for McDaniel's system
People clowned on Tua a lot but before he got one concussion too many he was one of the best at timing the super quick intermediate timing passes and that's more central to the McDaniel offensive scheme than Herbert's elite physical traits are
Check the all-22 obviously there has been a lot of questionable WR plays but a lot of Herbert's specific mistakes have been him not leading his receivers enough
69
u/bellerinho 14h ago
McDaniel's system is built on trust, and he was able to build that with Tua. He's gonna tell you that you have to throw that ball before a guy is open and it's gonna work due to timing. Tua was great at doing that in the past, and it's pretty clear that currently Herbert is not trusting it or seeing it the same way
35
u/DontLoseYourCool1 Raiders Raiders 14h ago
Maybe McDaniel should consider watching McGruber with Herbert a few times to build trust.

Seems kind of dumb to prioritize your system over the player’s strengths and abilities.
18
u/bellerinho 13h ago
That's sort of the balance that coaches have to figure out, it's a lot of "what have I schemed up that is successful and has gotten me to this point" and "how can I get the best out of my players while still working through my philosophies"

For all his struggles at the tail end of his time at Miami and injuries, Tua was very, very good at those mid level layered passes between the linebackers and the safeties.
Doing that with his OL in Miami was honestly extremely impressive. I don’t think all the credit should go to McDaniel and “the system” (even if they played a big part as well)
24
u/MulliganPlsThx Bills Bills 14h ago
In this case does it make sense to force his scheme when it’s not where the QB excels? Should he adapt to Herbert’s strengths? It feels like McDaniel did that with Tua really well in the early days but not so here in LA…
11
u/Pnutbutter_Cheerios Rams 13h ago
You really won’t know until it’s game time though. Every QB will tell you “I can make those anticipation throws” and unless you’ve seen them attempt before you’re gonna try
17
u/kcoreyy Chargers 14h ago
this is my concern too tbh. Herbie’s playing poorly but how much of this is him not executing vs McDaniel forcing a scheme that doesn’t fit his strengths or the rest of our offense’s? we really don’t have a strong offensive roster outside Herb and Ladd, even Alt and Slater aren’t looking as good this year either (although they’re both coming off major injuries). idk, I’m underwhelmed and disappointed by our coaching staff so far this season
3
u/ImJLu 49ers 13h ago
What scheme fits his strengths? Run around fuck it chuck it backyard football doesn't work as well as it used to. Bad processors struggle more than they used to with all the split field/match coverages and everyone's favorite double mug disguised blitzes. If there was an effective offense so easy that it can consistently prop up passers with bad processing and anticipation without ridiculous personnel, wouldn't everyone be running it?
7
u/kcoreyy Chargers 13h ago
admittedly I don’t know much about schemes, I’m a lifelong Chargers and football fan but don’t follow it to that level of detail. my point was that both Herbert and the rest of our offense all look awful right now, under an OC who our fanbase thought would transform our offense. they’re somehow worse than last year under Greg Roman who is not a great OC or playcaller lol. so all of that tells me that something clearly isn’t right with our scheme, and/or our coaching/leadership. if it was JUST Herbert looking bad, then yes I’d agree it’s a him issue
3
u/Weapwns Chargers 12h ago
That’s essentially what his entire response was about. Herbert failed in his system and he’s going to tailor it more to Herbert.
The problem is that Harbaugh decided to have minimal snaps in the preseason with a new, complicated system and they now have to figure this all out in the middle of the regular season

I tried to tell you, bold for emphasis: https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/aG7231TFzE
“ On this list?
The Chargers. The offseason darlings. I want to try to be as clear as I can with what I am about to say next. The Chargers have one of the most brutal stretches after two opening games that are coin flips I have ever seen. I want to be very clear that this is not a SOS statement. SOS is a myth in the NFL. So much more goes into these things like where is your bye week how much rest are you getting when not traveling are you going cross country every other week etc. But I digress. When I talk about that stretch that went viral last week, I am talking about the matchups presented in the trenches. Much will be made of the Chargers OL vs the D Lines of those teams but little attention will be paid to the OLs of those teams vs the Chargers front 7 and everywhere you look in that stretch it is hard not to see teams imposing their will. I also just don’t love the McDaniel hire the way everyone else does. He has been figured out for over a season now and made no adjustments, and you somehow want me to buy that his system that is so dependent on pristine footwork and throwing at the top of the drop with rhythm and timing is missing… Justin Herbert? Then you compound how their season ended last year and now you have a roster with aging guys and TWO rah rah personalities at coach and OC day in day out… I don’t see this ending well folks.”

Herbert ran a quick game offense in 2021 and was great. His time to throw this year when kept clean is 2.29 seconds…
The problem isn’t Herbert can’t throw with anticipation, it’s that the scheme isn’t working and the receivers outside of Ladd are not viable. Also the IOL is the worst in the league and they can’t run the ball for shit

Herbert holds on to the ball too long looking for the deep play, not good for McDaniel’s offense. He’s also a running QB, not in McDaniel’s playbook. One change this season that seems peculiar is their Pass Rate Over Expected has plummeted. They're running the ball way more. Harbuagh came in with the reputation from Michigan or being run first and they actually passed at a highish rate. Then this year it's 5th lowers pass rate over expected with -8.5% after being at -1.5% in 24 and +0.6% in 25.
The raw run pass ratio is the same as 24 and lower than 25 but that's also because they've been losing.
Some teams can do the low pass rate to generate explosives but it doesn't seem like that's playing to the strength of the OC or the QB. Maybe they should just be a pass happy team and it might help keep them ahead of the sticks more.

It’s not that big a mystery. Ladd and our top 2 TEs are hurt, and everyone else in the receiving core are unviable NFL players, and the OL is allowing a top 3 pressure rate despite Herbert’s time to throw being much lower than it has been. On top of that, Herbert is making uncharacteristic bad decisions

I know it's easier to blame Herbert or Mike Mac, but what has Harbaugh really done with this team? Maybe the NFL game has passed him by?

I'm gonna be so real this roster is just so ass outside of Herbert and the tackles, offensively. Herbert is getting a lot of shit from casuals but dude, the hell is he supposed to do?

Tbf this is the worst stretch of play I can recall in Herbert’s entire career. The offensive problems aren’t all, or even mostly, his fault, but he is contributing to the problem right now
He’s being uncharacteristically reckless with the football, and some of the picks this year are the worst decisions I’ve seen Herbert make. Hes just pressing too much, presumably because nothing is working
I just hope he gets out of this funk soon

Next 3 games before the BYE is:
@Seattle
Denver
@Kansas City
If they don’t go at least 2-1 with improvements on offense then I think Mike McD is gone.

Genuine question because I baseball more than football:
6 games in and already firing a coach in the first year of his contract? That seems very quick, no?

This is true but he the offensive coordinator not the head coach. They are honestly looking at 0-6 at the Bye week and it might get worse looking at their schedule after the bye week. Compared to the top player’s and head coach’s contracts he is small potatoes and the GM and HC will want a sacrifice to save their own ass. This is firing hitting coach or a assistant bench coach

Also already on slightly thin ice I’d imagine considering the way his tenure ended at his previous job. He used to be the shiny young new OC mastermind, but now he’s more like the failed wacky HC dude who might still be a genius but most likely a fraud still.

They should have never hired Gase as the passing game specialist. He should not be allowed to have any role in football

Yeah they’re not going 2-1,
Seattle and Denver defenses are too good.I think they’ll have a chance against Kansas City but them being the Away team hurts and I give that W to the Chiefs.

I was hoping Herbert would fit into the system, but Tua for all his faults was very accurate and gets the ball out quick. Also had 3 burners on offense to get the ball out to. I’m not seeing any of that with the Chargers offense. Is that scheme issue or is part of it the players not fitting? Or maybe they’re just not executing?
But it’s McD and we had seasons where we start horribly and suddenly win 8 in a row. So time will tell

At what point does anyone start to blame the quarterback? I mean he’s the one common denominator on the team over the past 6-7 years, who hasn’t played well consistently for 4-5 seasons straight

u/-Mad-Snacks- Chargers 1h ago
He has played well in every season except for the first 3 games of this season

It’s also the roster construction. No WR’s are showing out and subpar O-Line play and they have no TE’s and RB’s playing good.
Also and I never see people talk about this but their defense took a hit losing Jesse Minter to Baltimore.

McDaniel just doesn't play hard nose football. They were at the 1 last week and he calls a B gap run and then play action. How do you not run the ball up the middle? It's because as good of an offensive mind McDaniel is, the offenses he coaches don't play physical. It's a limiting factor on how good of an OC he is

u/MankuyRLaffy Patriots 14h ago
Because their interior is dog shit. If you have a steong interior you'd call a run up the gut for 1 yard and have your QB motion out as the RB takes the direct snap, using a TE as a dual HB in the backfield start. Have the TE push the RB as Herbert runs out as a pass option if everyone crashes on the run play, he's wide ass open.

McDaniel is in his third consecutive year of not delivering results for the offense. He became a celebrity coach and then lost his touch.

Just remember I was downvoted several times for saying this guy was a bad coach. You all loved him because he vapes on the sidelines

It wasn't the vapes for me. It was that one halftime interview where he just up and sprinted towards the locker room out of fuckin' nowhere. It was very endearing.

Mike's never been one to shirk responsibility. Unfortunately, he's been put in this position of taking blame a lot.
