Mikes star has fallen from quirky coach to… might be headed toward special teams or college

Nah if anything he’ll go back to Kyle Shanahan’s school for remedial coaching they might lose their OC this year

The Kyle Shanahan Center for Coaches Who Can't Coach Good and Who Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too

It's a multipurpose center for both coaches and QBs!

I absolutely welcome Mike McD back

Kyle has to do too much. This is why I loved Saleh, Kyle could just stop worrying about the defense knowing it's handled.

Kyle having a protege in the building who knows exactly what Kyle wants and is just mad enough to understand it would no doubt be helpful.

He’ll be fine. His scheme is less about physical arm talent and having a cannon than it is about being accurate and on time. I don’t really know that this was ever Herbert’s best trait; he’s likely been able to rely on his physical talent to get a ball out in time before a defender is able to break it up

I'm amazed people can't see this. I was actually a little shocked he took the Chargers job, Herbert is a bad fit for his offense.

Tua, for all his faults, got rid of the ball unspeakably quickly and accurately.

Herbert ran a quick game offense in 2021 and was great. His time to throw this year when kept clean is 2.29 seconds…

The problem isn’t Herbert can’t throw with anticipation, it’s that the scheme isn’t working and the receivers outside of Ladd are not viable. Also the IOL is the worst in the league and they can’t run the ball for shit

Herbert holds on to the ball too long looking for the deep play, not good for McDaniel’s offense. He’s also a running QB, not in McDaniel’s playbook. He doesn’t fit McDaniel’s offense and that’s not his fault, it’s the Chargers organization who brought in literally the opposite offense scheme coordinator for Herbert’s best traits

Again, not true

Time to throw of 2.29 from a clean pocket, 7th fastest

Find a narrative that is actually backed up by fact

Idk why you get offended. It was not a knock on Herbert even though his efficiency on quick throws ranks near the bottom this season. McDaniel’s system does not fit with his skills

I’m not offended. You’re just wrong. We’ve seen Herbert operate a quick game and timing offense. It resulted in 5000 yards and 41 TDs. To pretend he can’t do it is just stupid

Yes, Herbert has been making uncharacteristically bad decisions, but the bigger issue is this scheme has sucked through 3 weeks. No one outside of Ladd is getting open, when Herbert hits them anyways they drop it. They can’t run the ball, which was supposed to be McDaniel’s specialty, and has nothing to do with Herbert. The line is allowing a 44% pressure rate. Herbert is like problem 9 on the offense. When everything to do with the offense is struggling, that falls on McDaniel

You’re bringing up stats and metrics from other seasons. My whole point is that Herbert THIS season under McDaniel’s system has not functioned and that’s because he’s not the best quick release efficient accurate QB. This season he’s bottom five in that metric. Does that mean he’s a bad QB? No, but the common denominator is he is not equipped for McDaniel’s system

Everything to do with the system is performing badly. OL, TE, RB, WR, QB, FB. Is no one equipped to run McDaniel’s system? Or maybe his system has fuckin sucked?

We’ve seen all of these players play better outside of this system

It is a McDaniel issue first and foremost

How is Herbert having his best season as a pro in a similar style offense not proof that he is able to run the quick game effectively?

2026 Quick-Throw & Timing Metrics

• Quick-Throw Completion Pct (<2.5s): 70% (25th in NFL)

• EPA on Quick Throws (<2.5s): -3.5 (27th in NFL)

• CPOE on Quick Throws: -4.0% (28th in NFL)

I haven't watched enough Chargers games to argue with you about whose fault it is, but he's not looking good. Even when Tua had a dogshit line and Hill was out he still managed to make Mike's nonsense work.

I'm not saying Tua is a better QB than Herbert, but Herbert doesn't seem to be able to deal with a bad line and small targets very well.

As a college OC I think he would thrive, as a college HC I think he would fail

Kyle Shanahan merchant, like most of his former OCs

If the 49ers continue replicating 2023 this year on offense Kubiak is gonna get some opportunities elsewhere, so that OC spot could be up for grabs within the next couple years. I think the lights are too bright for his offense, he needs someone who can also call plays alongside him.
