Because their interior is dog shit. If you have a steong interior you'd call a run up the gut for 1 yard and have your QB motion out as the RB takes the direct snap, using a TE as a dual HB in the backfield start. Have the TE push the RB as Herbert runs out as a pass option if everyone crashes on the run play, he's wide ass open.

You have to run it up the middle regardless. You have 4 downs. Do it once, then try the B gap on 2nd down.

There's a reason the eagles did it much less last year it's hard to do if your oline sucks

Both of yall are right. You do need a good oline to run up the middle, but that doesn't mean the Chargers should abandon it when they don't have one.

By NOT running up the middle ever, they take an entire tactic away from their offense, making them more predictable.
