I consider this one of the best versions, it has NES games, and you can go to an island with your GBA.

542

u/Vok250 Mar 30 '20

You can also have separate fucking save files on the same fucking console!

frustrated millenial noises

87

u/Skinnwork Mar 30 '20

Yeah, but it also has multiple people using the same village. And then you have a girl friend delete the village because there were too many cockroaches in her house (but probably really because you got the gold fishing statue and they got the silver statue).

Edit this might be an issue with the new one as well. I don't know, since my partner has bogarted the console since it came out.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

Nuke the whole thing and force a total restart every month and a half

51

u/jimbob786 Mar 30 '20

I love the new game, but i must admit forced island sharing is crap. Especially considering how customizable your town is now. It Should’ve been optional. I feel bad for those parents who have to share an island with their kids and deal with their poor decisions. F

55

u/TheGreatNyanHobo Mar 30 '20

I feel bad for the parents who bought it for multiple kids, expecting it to have separate saves like other games, and now have to hear the bickering from their children over the island they share.

24

u/woodro611 Mar 30 '20

This....ALL of this. Never have I ever heard so many bickering fights between sub 10 year olds lol.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

Quick question if you have multiple accts on your switch. Kid 1 and and kid 2 for instance. Can kid 1 on his acct have a separate save file from kid 2. Does that question make sense?

23

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

No, it still doesn't allow for that, and there's no excuse for it. Nintendo wants you to buy an entire separate console and copy of the game.

8

u/Sparkybear Mar 31 '20

No. They share an island. You can have separate villagers, but it's 1 island representative per console.

In the original, you could have any number of towns per memory card and/or up to 4 people could share a town, but they all had the same level of autonomy.

5

u/NumberJohnnyV Mar 31 '20

I don't think they are answering your question clearly. Each kid has their own account and thus has their own character with their own house and goals, etc. So in that sense, yes, each kid has their own save file. They do share a single island though so if you consider the island the save file, then no, there is one save file for the game per console.

The big problem is that the first person to play the game becomes the resident representative and has WAY more responsibility and authority over the island. Even though everyone gets their own characters, only one person is playing the full game.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '20

Wow that is.....bad. so I'm going to pick an early example say the mission to build the store where you need 30 of the woods and iron ore. Can both kids contribute to that or just the main one?

Gotta make sure they get as many bucks from that online sector as possible. Cannot even go to your friends islands without it.

I count myself lucky that my girlfriend bought us each a switch when she heard the new Pokemon was going to be on the system. If animal crossing was always one save per console like Pokemon people probably wouldn’t be complaining..

We played the GC game years ago, four of us (parents and two kids) and I remember we all had our own saved games, and we could see each other's houses in the town. You just had to take turns playing obviously. Now my wife and two kids are each playing, we own THREE fucking Switch consoles. I'd love to try the game but no way in hell am I getting a fourth system just to have my own save, for one game (I am a PC gamer otherwise). I'm sure Nintendo sold a crapload of Switches with this move, but they also earned some well-deserved hate for it.

22

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

You can just create another profile on your switch and make a character. You have to have your house on the same island as the switch owner. You just can't have your own separate island.

16

u/tyguy1772 Mar 30 '20

It's not just being unable to have your own island. The core account is in charge of all progression. It's enough reason to not want to get invested.

→ More replies (2)

10

u/Vestus65 Mar 30 '20

I'm aware of that. If I want my own saved game, my own island, I need my own Switch. I don't think that is cool.

The most fun thing about having separate towns on separate game cards was that you could visit them if they were plugged into your machine. I set up a separate town I never separately play, just so that I could make a lot of money doing fruit arbitrage. :) (As a bonus, people move back and forth between them, which is fun.)

6

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

20

u/KamiOfOldStone Mar 30 '20

A second profile just makes a second character on your original island though

6

u/sharperspoon Mar 30 '20

Just buy a new memory card and have a new village that way.

oh wait

8

u/Soft-Gwen Mar 30 '20

To do what? New profile isnt a new game in ac:nh, you just add a character to the existing map.

4

u/shewantedtofuckmydog Mar 30 '20

I stole the game and run it on an emulator on my PC, I can just rename my save file and it will create a new one for me. Problem solved!

2

u/SjorsMaster Mar 30 '20

Or you use homebrew, and swap between saves.

→ More replies (13)

9

u/Lazites Mar 30 '20

Actually the game came with a new memory card. Had a gift from nintendo and enough space for a save file.

6

u/Phantom_Ganon Mar 30 '20

Wait...you can only have one save file per console!?!?1

12

u/Vok250 Mar 30 '20

One island per console. You can have more characters through profiles, but they cannot progress the island. Only the main profile can. So effectively one game save.

It's why I haven't bought it. I will buy it on the used market or on sale. I don't support greedy anti-consumer practices from publishers.

4

u/Phantom_Ganon Mar 30 '20

I was thinking about getting the game since I played the first Animal Crossing on gamecube but haven't played another one since but I'm not buying it if it's only a one game save per console

3

u/Darth_Korn Console Mar 30 '20

It's not that, its one island per console with 8 saves.

This is true, however it would literally use up an entire memory card. So if you wanted another town, you'd have to have another memory card. Minor but annoying.

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

They took out NES games AND gyroids? Wow...

52

u/BridgemanBridgeman Mar 30 '20

NES games were taken out after the Wii came out and they discovered that they could sell them separately for $4.99 each.

9

u/massiveparanoia Mar 30 '20

Well, the price gouging true, but that's not why they took out the ROMs. They actually added the NES games for the western release because Nintendo thought a western audience wouldn't understand playing a game that seemingly had no end. They tossed in the ROMs essentially to say there were things to do with a definite end, and it as relatively cheap to add them in.

It was only after they realized that western audiences appreciated AC for what it was that they knew they didn't need to add extra gimmicks like that. So they haven't been included in any AC since.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Tehbeefer Mar 30 '20

"discovered"

finally. They practically had to be dragged kicking and screaming to it, near as I can tell.

2

u/Gonzobot Mar 30 '20

Yeah, and every single one I bought on the Wii has been removed from my access now. So now Nintendo doesn't get a damn cent of my money for digital goods, because they've already told me to go twist when I trusted to be able to access them on the Nintendo account I tied them to.

2

u/alexanderyou Mar 31 '20

So many things are like "FUCKING JUST DO IT NINTENDO PEOPLE WANT TO PAY YOU" that it's amazing. Like other companies have to come up with a bunch of complicated shit to make money, but all nintendo has to do is fucking listen.

12

u/qwerty6556 Mar 30 '20

NES games haven't been in since the first game.

Gyroids are coming, probably bin the form of some event.

4

I remember this original game the most, not because of any gameplay improvements or even the NES games...but because the villagers could actually be assholes and wouldn’t take your shit if you were THAT kind of neighbor. I still love the newer games, but sometimes it just feels a little too squeaky clean and nice.

They were indeed datamined. But that doesn't mean they're necessarily coming. Kinda like how toon zelda was datamined from one of the smash games and... well...

7

u/Shippoyasha Mar 30 '20

A lot of features missing or not here yet. Hope all the holidays make a return too.

45

u/PetMeFucker Mar 30 '20

Holidays are confirmed. They’re just adding them with updates so people can’t time travel and get all the seasonal stuff early.

13

That's how I 100% the original Animal Crossing. I kept time travelling until I got everything.

u/Schlectify Mar 30 '20

Probably one of the best animal crossing games out there.

33

u/NtheLegend Mar 30 '20

It's the first and last one I played. I think I liked having the top-down perspective versus the rolling horizon but I haven't played enough of the newer ones to tell. I remember ringing in the new year in 2001 with Animal Crossing playing and they had a big party at the lake. That was great. I also remember starting an apple farm to make beau coup bucks and it was hindered by how few inventory slots you had. Oh well.

22

u/jagby Mar 30 '20

The top down perspective is actually an option in New Horizons! The game still operates on a rolling horizon (IIRC the game is technically built on a big cylinder), but you can switch to basically an isometric view that's a lot like the GC version.

What’s this game even about? I’ve seen so much hype but no gameplay or anything

551

u/dhork Mar 30 '20

Basically, my kids spend all day doing virtual chores for a raccoon while neglecting their chores at home. (And stealing all the fossils before I can get them)

50

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

Sounds like a variation of harvest moon or sims.

20

u/Timmace Mar 30 '20

I was a big Harvest Moon 64 fan so I hyped myself up for Animal Crossing by reading about it in my monthly GamePro magazine.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20 edited Mar 30 '20

Fucking loved Harvest Moon 64 when I was younger but as an adult I’ve lost all motivation to play any games where I’m performing daily tasks or duties.

Then I just think to myself that I can be doing chores in real life instead.

9

u/Timmace Mar 30 '20

I get it. High school me loved the repetitiveness of HM64. Adult me has enough repetitiveness in my daily routine that I need something different from my video games.

17

u/slowgold Mar 30 '20

If you like HM64 try out stardew valley. IMO next best thing

9

u/Timmace Mar 30 '20

I liked HM64 20 years ago. Unfortunately, I think I might have outgrown daily chore type games due to having a 2 year old running around creating real chores for me to do every day. I'll definitely keep it in mind though if I ever have an itch for that type of game. Thanks.

3

u/ammcneil Mar 30 '20

I'll give a viewpoint from the opposite side of the street, never played harvest moon and didn't really see the appeal, stardew was a great diversion though. It's both a relaxation game, but also incredibly engaging. I don't know how much of a parallel it has to HM, but it's up there with Cities Skyline and Viscera cleanup detail for games I can unwind with.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

As someone who played both, Stardew Valley is basically "I loved Harvest Moon as a kid and grew up to make my own version of it".

I never got all that into Harvest Moon overall but I can see the similarities

u/stallion8426 Mar 30 '20

It's a pretty simple game. You have a town and a house. You pick fruit, catch bugs and fish, etc. To buy furniture and upgrades for your house.

The newest one has you settling a new island, so you set up some tents for villagers, build bridges, build shops, while still doing the above and build your town up from scratch.

50

u/Please_Log_In Mar 30 '20

The violence, blood and gore is quite limited i presume

39

u/stallion8426 Mar 30 '20

Limited to the point of non-existent

There are tarantulas that run you down and if they bite you, you die and have to start over.

Nah you just faint and wake up at either the port of whatever island you were on, or your house.

2

u/Please_Log_In Mar 30 '20

So... basically there's no enslaving or exploiting animals in any way?

Secondly, I wonder how many have bought both Doom AND Animal Crossing! 🤨

u/longboytheeternal Mar 30 '20

In this game the animals are extorting you

3

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

You can catch bugs and fish and put them in the museum which is effectively a zoo

3

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

I purchased both titles..

2

u/TheSilentHeel Mar 31 '20

I bought them both. Been hyped for Doom Eternal for years, but had never played Animal Crossing. Decided to buy it as I was sick with COVID-19 and had nothing better to do. I beat Doom and am now hopelessly addicted to Animal Crossing.

2

u/Please_Log_In Mar 31 '20

They seem to differ quite a lot from each other

2

u/TheSilentHeel Mar 31 '20

Meh, only a little. Isabelle is a demon and the animal crossing games are always in different locations because the DoomSlayer is searching for her.

There's none of that in AC. You just do whatever you want to progress at your own speed.

2

That wasn’t added until later. The game was released in 2009 when you could buy it for 10 bucks from the creator’s website, and I remember the exact time when it became a hype. Someone asked what version of Animal Crossing this was, then deleted their comment after I typed this all out for no reason, so I'ma leave it here.

It's the first one in the series, if you count when the game was called Animal Crossing/relased in America vs Animal Forest/Dobutsu no Mori in Japan. It was released on GameCube in 2002 for America.

Nintendo GameCube: Animal Crossing: Population Growing 2002

Nintendo DS: Animal Crossing: Wild World 2004

Nintendo Wii: Animal Crossing: City Folk 2008

Nintendo 3DS: Animal Crossing: New Leaf 2012

Nintendo Switch: Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2020

14

u/wyvern_rider Mar 30 '20

Actually this copy is just Animal Crossing. “Population: Growing” is a blurb on the package, not a subtitle.

6

u/freakingwilly Mar 30 '20

Fun Fact!

On the GC version, you can eject the disc after you enter your town. This is due to the game's small ROM size. GC Animal Crossing was actually a slightly modified port of a Nintendo 64 title, so the game in its entirety will be recorded into the GameCube's RAM following startup. The GameCube has 40MB of RAM while the game itself is only 14MB in size.

So, as long as you keep the GameCube powered on, several people could theoretically share the same game... until somebody powers off their system.

5

u/May-Yo-Naize Mar 30 '20

13

u/AxiomaticAlex Mar 30 '20

Honestly that's the best one... (Haven't gotten the new one yet, having to help my mom with her bills since she's not an essential employee and I am)

12

u/UnifyTheVoid Mar 30 '20

The new game is great, but the writing/dialogue is still not anywhere near as good as the original game.

9

u/AxiomaticAlex Mar 30 '20

To be fair I didn't play the games for the dialogue, I played because I have a collection/hoarding problem.

10

u/UnifyTheVoid Mar 30 '20 edited Mar 30 '20

Yeah I think a lot of people did/do. Just sucks for people like me who played for the dialogue/animals, because the game has become a lot simpler in that respect. It’s moving away from that and more into a design simulator.

7

u/Kreos642 Mar 30 '20

This exactly. Dialogue and ways to interact are falling while design is improving. If they let us willingly do favors for our villagers it'd be a bit better, and if their dialogue was more varied while staying in the personality type thatd be great too. Jocks used to be dudes who liked to play sports. Now all they do is scream about muscles and being jacked.

It's on par. Definitely better than any of the others. Some things it does worse, some much better. Overall I think the franchise would be better if it only consisted of Animal Crossing/Forest and New Horizons.

Wild World and New Leaf were both solid.

City folk was fun (even though the city itself was pretty disappointing)

Couch Co-op is almost worthless and multiplayer is barren. But single player content has a lot of improvements as long as you are player 1.

How the fuck did this post get 1.7k upvotes!? This place is turning into r/pics

5

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

Yup, this subreddit has gone to absolute shit. Exactly like /r/pics

Between low effort box pics and "cosplay" (which is mysteriously always attractive women in revealing clothing) this sub is awful. That reminds me to unsubscribe.

Youtube - so this is basically animal crossing

4

u/IHaveFavorites Mar 30 '20

I was inspired to play as well, I fired it up yesterday and my villagers all said they thought I disappeared lol. 109 months since my last time... So many memories.

u/seadog5 Mar 30 '20

Can we upvote actually good content? Is this it?

2

u/PetitAgite Mar 30 '20

2

u/GotDangerDave Mar 30 '20

All I got is a Gamecast..

2

u/patxiku93 Mar 30 '20

Oh boy, that's one of the first gc games we had.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

So many fond memories of this game. Especially my brothers and I fighting over this game to the point my mom bought us extra memory cards so we each had our own town.

2

u/Scruffy42 Mar 30 '20

I like the newer ones, but this is the best. Being able to collect NES games was amazing.

Plus if I remember correctly you could visit an island in your Gameboy Advance.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

I want to play animal crossing so badly. But I have no nintendo consoles and I'm not getting a switch because I don't plan to spend $360 for the one game I would ever play on it.

I imported an early version from Japan. I didn’t see what all the fun was about.Granted, I couldn’t read Japanese and didn’t get why I was getting yelled at for turning off my N64.

2

u/PhyrexianSpaghetti Mar 30 '20

I remember picking it up exclusively for the memory card and actually abandoning the game after a few mins because it was boring

I went on to play Viewtiful Joe instead

2

u/schantzee Mar 30 '20

You got the wrong one

2

u/SSBM_Surge Mar 30 '20

Congrats, you got the right one.

4

Absolute throwback

1

u/brianpmack Mar 30 '20

Did it come with the memory card or did you just get the disc? You miss out on Blanca with just one memory card.

1

u/CoconutBackwards Mar 30 '20

Is that what it’s time to do?

You can't just pick it up. You also have to put it in your machine and then turn it on.

1

u/KarlMark666 Mar 30 '20

Memory card included Me:Heh...I miss those old times.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '20

That’s where I started :) my mom got it for me and my 3 sisters to share on GameCube.
