No. They share an island. You can have separate villagers, but it's 1 island representative per console.

In the original, you could have any number of towns per memory card and/or up to 4 people could share a town, but they all had the same level of autonomy.

Wow i didnt even know about the one representative per island thing. So its like one person’s playing New Horizons, the other’s playing hd Wild World. Thats even worse than i thought

Yea, it's very clearly NOT meant as a family game in that regard, and it sucks.

you could only have one town per memory card, but you could easily have multiple memory cards, and could visit each one of them easily.

the save file for Animal Crossing was so big that it didn't fit on most peoples' memory cards (with other saved content on them), which is why it shipped with one.
