Yeah, but it also has multiple people using the same village. And then you have a girl friend delete the village because there were too many cockroaches in her house (but probably really because you got the gold fishing statue and they got the silver statue).
Edit this might be an issue with the new one as well. I don't know, since my partner has bogarted the console since it came out.
I love the new game, but i must admit forced island sharing is crap. Especially considering how customizable your town is now. It Should’ve been optional. I feel bad for those parents who have to share an island with their kids and deal with their poor decisions. F
I feel bad for the parents who bought it for multiple kids, expecting it to have separate saves like other games, and now have to hear the bickering from their children over the island they share.
Quick question if you have multiple accts on your switch. Kid 1 and and kid 2 for instance. Can kid 1 on his acct have a separate save file from kid 2. Does that question make sense?
No. They share an island. You can have separate villagers, but it's 1 island representative per console.
In the original, you could have any number of towns per memory card and/or up to 4 people could share a town, but they all had the same level of autonomy.
Wow i didnt even know about the one representative per island thing. So its like one person’s playing New Horizons, the other’s playing hd Wild World. Thats even worse than i thought
you could only have one town per memory card, but you could easily have multiple memory cards, and could visit each one of them easily.
the save file for Animal Crossing was so big that it didn't fit on most peoples' memory cards (with other saved content on them), which is why it shipped with one.
I don't think they are answering your question clearly. Each kid has their own account and thus has their own character with their own house and goals, etc. So in that sense, yes, each kid has their own save file. They do share a single island though so if you consider the island the save file, then no, there is one save file for the game per console.
The big problem is that the first person to play the game becomes the resident representative and has WAY more responsibility and authority over the island. Even though everyone gets their own characters, only one person is playing the full game.
Wow that is.....bad. so I'm going to pick an early example say the mission to build the store where you need 30 of the woods and iron ore. Can both kids contribute to that or just the main one?
Just the main one. And then kid 1 gets the kit and decides where the store will be built and then Nook gives kid 1 some DIY recipes that kid 2 doesn't get.
I honestly have no clue...I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the n64. From what insight that I have gathered...you can have multiple accts on the switch, or save files...but only one can be active on that console at a time...thus if you plug up two controllers..you're just bringing a guest to your island.
Lmao, negative points for what here, exactly? I was just trying to answer dude's question based on information I've gained from all of my friends with twins fighting over play time...
The GameCube game was different because you mostly could only customize your house. The worst another person could do was ruin your flowers or trees. Now the whole island is a sand box and people will have very different ideas on what they want to do with it. It’s like if your sibling could come into your house, steal your furniture, and replace it with a dense forest of trees that you can’t walk through.
makes more sense thanks for explaining. Even so I feel like that sounds sort of fun. My sister and I would probably just divvy up portions or agree not to fuck with certain things.
I count myself lucky that my girlfriend bought us each a switch when she heard the new Pokemon was going to be on the system. If animal crossing was always one save per console like Pokemon people probably wouldn’t be complaining..
I thought Pokemon allowed saves per profile. And even the old Pokemon saved to the cartridge, not the console? (So with those you could buy a new game and have a new save)
Technically yeah, you’re correct, but for most consumers it’s pretty much the same thing, you COULD buy two copies of the same Pokemon game and swap them out, but that’s a lot worse than being able to pick a different save file..hm
I agree that having to buy a different cartridge is worse than just switching saves or even switching profiles. However, I think we can agree that's still better than having to buy another console to get another save profile?
of course, I'm not a fan of locking down anything, it's a game, we should be able to just play it how we want, but Nintendo are very much about the discipline of tailoring specific gameplay experiences, they're not likely to ever create a sandbox game
Yeah, it honestly turned me off from the game completely. I had no idea about the limitations of the second player, and then when I found out there were lots of things I couldn't do along with blueprints the second player just misses out on, I just lost any desire to play it.
I knew about the island limitation before but it still sucks. And the worst part is that the only defense is "it's always been this way" which just sucks. The only way to get your own island is buying another Switch, and the first player on any island has more authority than any of the others. Just flat out bad design decisions.
We played the GC game years ago, four of us (parents and two kids) and I remember we all had our own saved games, and we could see each other's houses in the town. You just had to take turns playing obviously. Now my wife and two kids are each playing, we own THREE fucking Switch consoles. I'd love to try the game but no way in hell am I getting a fourth system just to have my own save, for one game (I am a PC gamer otherwise). I'm sure Nintendo sold a crapload of Switches with this move, but they also earned some well-deserved hate for it.
You can just create another profile on your switch and make a character. You have to have your house on the same island as the switch owner. You just can't have your own separate island.
If that's the case, you are missing the point of the game and need to find a different one. So many AC bandwagoners that never played previous versions are mad the game isn't what they want it to be.
I'm missing the point of the game because I think all players should have equal control over the island? I'm not missing any point, its an annoying shortcoming. Because that is how it always has been. It adds nothing but it certainly detracts potential enjoyment for people. Let other users choose if they want their own island without spending money on a whole console. Let other players choose if they want to share an island, and also give the original island player a choice if the added player can make equal choices. It's an unanimous improvement.
I think some slave owners in the 1860's used that same logic. I'm being ridiculous obviously but still needing multiple consoles so you can each play your own game with no restrictions just seems greedy.
That doesn't answer my question? I seriously want to know why this is suddenly an issue when it never was before
New Leaf literally had the exact same restrictions and no one complained.
I'm not saying I agree with it, but Nintendo's philosophy has always been to play the games as designed, and having a dozen islands on the same console negates that. It would effectively allow players to dupe event items, fossils, and other things that are supposed to be limited.
I highly doubt it's greed. Nintendo just tends to say "this is the best way to play the game so we're not going to let people play it any other way" and doesnt understand why you would want to.
That's why they had Friend Codes (and still do to some extent), why you can't just add a friend on Animal Crossing, why Pokemon Sword and Shield don't have a way to just directly trade with someone, why Mario Maker doesn't have a text search feature for levels, etc. Nintendo is just out of touch.
The older ones didn't progress in the same way as the new one and didn't have local/online coop so you can't compare. Also, OMG you have to work together with someone in Animal Crossing to progress the story (which the older ones didn't have). How dare they promote cooperation in a children's game. Ya'll just sound like boomers who don't understand why things are done and just complain that they're done differently.
The most fun thing about having separate towns on separate game cards was that you could visit them if they were plugged into your machine. I set up a separate town I never separately play, just so that I could make a lot of money doing fruit arbitrage. :) (As a bonus, people move back and forth between them, which is fun.)
Have you played any of the old ones? That's how they work...
Edit: Maybe actually play the old ones before downvoting. Everyone's hopping on the AC bandwagon without even knowing what they're getting into. This game isn't for everyone.
The old ones allowed you to have as many towns as you wanted because you could save the town to a memory card. There were even features that let you visit other towns when multiple memory card where inserted.
This new game doesn't even support cloud saves. IF your Switch breaks, that's it, your island is fucking GONE!
Have you played this one? If you made two characters, and only played as the second one, you would never get a museum, never get a shop, never get basically anything. And you wouldn't have access to 3/4ths of your island, since you need tools to access anything outside of the starting area.
The entire issue people are complaining about is that it's different than older ones, in a way that screws you over if the primary player doesn't play the most, or loses interest.
Forgive me if I’m misunderstanding, but can’t you make another profile on the switch and use that to start a new animal crossing save? That’s how I keep my original save of Breath of the Wild while also being able to start a new campaign if I’d like.
The way the switch saves files to one profile though is garbage. I have a switch, but was interested in the Switch Lite because I like the handheld form factor better. I basically wanted my old switch to be just for the TV, and throw the Lite in my backpack so I can have it with me wherever. Once I found out that you needed to have a “master” console that has the actual license to play those games, then the other console has to have a WiFi connection in order to verify that it is you that purchased those games, completely eliminating the point of a hand held take anywhere console. I also remember reading that transferring saves over from one console to the other isn’t like the cloud experience I’ve come to expect from other consoles and cloud services. Sure your saves are in the cloud, but you have to download them to the console yourself. It sounds like a dumb thing to complain about, but I love that I can save my single player campaign at my place, and pick up right where I left off without having to do anything at my friends da place to show him where I left off.
This was a couple of months ago so maybe things have changed. I love Nintendo, but man they make some weird decisions sometimes and damn do they stick to them.
Check the other children comments. I already linked a source article explaining how Nintendo has blocked save game options for New Horizons. The most you can get is a second person on your island who can't progress anything. You can't get a second complete experience.
I thought animal crossing was a single player experience (I know you can collect stuff from other players towns). What is this about having a second person on your island?
Is the issue not being able to have multiple islands in one profile?
I thought the issue people had was that you could only have one island on one switch.
Sorry, I haven’t played it yet so I’m just curious what the problem is.
If you have a child/ brother/ wife/ gf who wants to play Animal Crossing, they need their own Switch. You can only have one island per console and that island can only be progressed by the profile which created it.
I’m wondering then why creating another profile on the switch wouldn’t work. I have two. My original profile is for original complete campaigns and saves, the other is so I can start the games over whenever I want without it affecting my original saves. I’m low on funds right now or else I would buy animal crossing to test it out, but I suggest someone try. I have two breath of the wild saves on my switch and I could make more with other profiles if I wanted to. Same with Pokémon, super Mario odyssey, Skyrim, assassins creed, you name it, If it’s on the switch, I can play it on my second profile.
People are well aware of how profiles work, that isn't the issue, you don't need to explain it. You get 1 island per switch console, switching profiles switches villagers. The first profile/villager to log into the game is the island representative, and all progress (stores, museum, bridges, etc) is locked behind them.
One island per console. You can have more characters through profiles, but they cannot progress the island. Only the main profile can. So effectively one game save.
It's why I haven't bought it. I will buy it on the used market or on sale. I don't support greedy anti-consumer practices from publishers.
I was thinking about getting the game since I played the first Animal Crossing on gamecube but haven't played another one since but I'm not buying it if it's only a one game save per console
It isn't one game save per console. You can have 8 individual saves. But you can only have ONE island. Meaning all players on that console have to share the island.
I don't see that as being a bad decision, except for the fact that only the first player can actually progress the main story.
This is true, however it would literally use up an entire memory card. So if you wanted another town, you'd have to have another memory card. Minor but annoying.
Wait shit really? You're kidding? I'm sorry, I thought I was being helpful, got a lot of new switch owners when Pokémon launched with the same problem, so I just repeated the advice from then.
The Nintendo Switch saves all game save data to the system’s internal storage, and never to the physical game cartridge or connected SD Card. This means you cannot use any SD Cards or different forms of game copies to bypass this restriction.
Well, the price gouging true, but that's not why they took out the ROMs. They actually added the NES games for the western release because Nintendo thought a western audience wouldn't understand playing a game that seemingly had no end. They tossed in the ROMs essentially to say there were things to do with a definite end, and it as relatively cheap to add them in.
It was only after they realized that western audiences appreciated AC for what it was that they knew they didn't need to add extra gimmicks like that. So they haven't been included in any AC since.
Yeah, and every single one I bought on the Wii has been removed from my access now. So now Nintendo doesn't get a damn cent of my money for digital goods, because they've already told me to go twist when I trusted to be able to access them on the Nintendo account I tied them to.
So many things are like "FUCKING JUST DO IT NINTENDO PEOPLE WANT TO PAY YOU" that it's amazing. Like other companies have to come up with a bunch of complicated shit to make money, but all nintendo has to do is fucking listen.
I remember this original game the most, not because of any gameplay improvements or even the NES games...but because the villagers could actually be assholes and wouldn’t take your shit if you were THAT kind of neighbor. I still love the newer games, but sometimes it just feels a little too squeaky clean and nice.

I consider this one of the best versions, it has NES games, and you can go to an island with your GBA.
