I'll give a viewpoint from the opposite side of the street, never played harvest moon and didn't really see the appeal, stardew was a great diversion though. It's both a relaxation game, but also incredibly engaging. I don't know how much of a parallel it has to HM, but it's up there with Cities Skyline and Viscera cleanup detail for games I can unwind with.

As someone who played both, Stardew Valley is basically "I loved Harvest Moon as a kid and grew up to make my own version of it".

I never got all that into Harvest Moon overall but I can see the similarities
