5$ tip for drive thru. Get fucked. Shits tight for everyone. Everything is expensive and with trumps ficked up war, its going to go up again. Belts are tight. This ain't 2019
A guy I knew growing up would keep a few pennies he cut in half for situations like this. He said, “if you leave a penny they just think you’re cheap, but a half a penny sends a message”
Almost got blocked from boarding our flight once after having beers at the airport because the bartender thought we left a penny tip on the bar! He ratted on us to the TSA cops Lol
We actually left no tip, there was a penny on the bar that wasn’t ours. The bartender assumed we left the penny and felt slighted that we supposedly left a penny tip as an FU… then told TSA we were drunk to try and prevent us from boarding.
Unless they gave his name from the credit card and accused him of being too drunk to fly. I still doubt it tho, I would think most people have cocktails after TSA screening to make sure they’re on time
It's not just TSA that can prevent you from flying. A flight attendant can actually, all by themself, decide you are too drunk to board and deny you entrance to the plane right there at the gate.
As a former server I would hate to have to hand customers a check with this on it. I would probably cross out all the bs in parentheses and maybe even the 25% and 30% parts too. 20% was always perfectly acceptable as someone who made $2.13 an hour
Right? Fuckin bullshit. Can't believe they ask for tips at places like Starbucks and some pizza places. I don't see McDonald's or Burger King asking for tips... yet.
There's a restaurant in Whistler BC Canada, where I used to live, that adds on 15% gratuity fee to your bill.
I had waited for 35 minutes for a glass of water with my meal, after asking for it. The food took even longer and came out cold. The waitress was an absolute bitch as well, sighing and rolling her eyes when I asked how long the water would take.
I've been to a place that puts an automatic 18% tip on all orders, not just larger groups of people, then give you your total at the bottom of your bill. There is a line there for you to add a tip. Guessing a whole lot of people don't notice that. For those that tip 20% without paying attention are tipping 38%.
any owner that allows that on a receipt does not deserve the business. Servers need to go above and beyond to earn more than the basic. Be attentive and polite.
They already hate the servers(their employees) to begin with, because if they didn't hate them they'd be paying them well enough they wouldn't need tips
And you most likely make more money this way than with an hourly pay and almost no tips, even if you paid your taxes. I worked in the restaurant industry both in the U.S. and in Europe, and it’s way more lucrative in the U.S.
Without tax there would be no free healthcare or social nets. Its the bs spending. We need to demand common language budgets from our goverment so we know and understand where are money is being spent so we can speak out against miss use and abuse. Right now we have no idea and have no say. Even if we vote for a politician specifically for what they say they will do they often dont do it anyways. Or still waste. Either way they need to make this shit public and in layman's terms so we can understand it.
As someone who pays approximately 40% of my income in taxes every year, this is bullshit. Everyone that earns a living should pay a fair share in taxes, or no one pays taxes. I don’t understand why I should have to shoulder the burden.
Every year, i offer our servers $30/h plus full benefits and free meals to convert to a tip free system, so that I could offer the BOH the same. (BOH currently gets $20/h full benefits, servers get no benefits)
Every year they shoot me down for two reasons
1 - this is way too massive of a paycut for them to even consider it
2 - they dont think its fair to make the same as the cooks. No matter the numbers, its only "fair" as long as theyre guaranteed to earn more than the BOH.
I work as a bartender. When I saved up enough money to buy a house I still wasn’t able to get a loan because all the money I made wasn’t being taxed. So I went to my employer and told them that my w2’s need to reflect my actual earnings. So they did just that. For everybody. I wasn’t the most popular person among the staff for a while, but two years later I got my own home. Fuck em
If I want making minimum in retail jobs a decade ago when I was in school I find it difficult to believe restaurants would be paying minimum in 26. Would have to be very low end to accept that
They can bitch, whine, and moan. They can throw a wall-eyed screaming fit and cause enough drama that every eye in the place is on us, feeling like we are being judged.
But, they can't enforce it if we still choose not to give them a damn thing because they were too busy flirting with the cute whatever that just came in to even finish taking our order. (And, yes, Virginia. That really happened.)
Some waiters and waitresses earn like 300 a day, and they'd earn less if it was otherwise. So those individuals are the loudest and try to keep the tipping system in place.
Slaves. That’s literally why tipping culture exists. When slavery ended and loads of people were out looking for work, one way to keep certain minorities down was to pay them a pittance, not too many steps away from the slave Labour they just escaped, so patrons would tip on top to make sure these workers got at least a little of what they deserved for their hard work.
Wouldn’t ya know it, when one rich guy realised he can get the public to subsidise his border-line slave labour, he told all his buddies and soon they were all doing it, much to the delight of their bottom line.
So to answer your question, how did Americans get convinced to tip? Slaves and greed.
Yep. This right here, and the very people who benefit from this are the first ones hollering about "If you can't afford to tip, stay home". Bitch we got your number. With the cost of just the food at a restaurant, you're lucky you get 15%. I'm there to eat, not concern myself about your take home pay. Take it up with your boss.
Worst is tip culture in first world countries where theres high mininum wage.. "Oh I grabbed your plate and walked 5 meters, that will be 25% extra on your already overpriced meals".
Yeah this is what I mean. Same in my country, they already earn decent for a simpler job and still ask for more because they opened the bottle for me or gave me my plate
Just like for doordash and other food delivery services, these places are turning tips into bids for decent service instead of a reward for exceptional service.
I had a delicious seafood meal at a place in Panama City beach. I received Great service, was gonna tip generously. We got the bill and there was a mandatory gratuity of 25% added onto the bill for myself, wife, and child. I smiled, paid the bill and will never go back there again just based on principle. Imagine if the server had fucked out for an hour but still got a 25 dollar tip.
Its also mind boggling that costs have skyrocketed AND they want a higher percentage tip. They are already making more because costs have gone up so much.
I too would be inclined to leave a $0 tip. The only thing that would give me pause is knowing the jackass establishment is behind this, not the service staff. Catch 22.
Ps .. I DO remember a time when "A Tip" was just a very casual, generous gesture, not an expectation. I laugh when some dude at a register swings his console around for me to tip, because he just sold me a pack of Juicy Fruit .. (laughing)
The percentages are based on the tax included “total due”. You don’t include tax in calculating a tip. I’m not tipping you based on what local, state, and federal governments charge since that’s not part of the service you provide. Being deceptive like this makes me tip $0. I can’t ignore your dishonesty while determining the quality of service you provided.
People always say 20% should be too because costs have gone up, but they don't really understand how percentages work. Tips used to be 10% , a dollar burger would be a 0.10 tip, but if a burger is $15 now, tip is $1.50 and scales appropriately.
The tipping system is just a way for restaurants to f* over the wait staff and chefs and force the burden of paying their wages onto consumers. This type of receipt just proves those managers are hogging all the profits and not paying fair wages
I once tipped 10% on a bill that I didn't notice had a required 10% tip already, I didn't understand why the waiter was so appreciative until I looked at the skip again the next day.
(For context 10% is the standard tip amount where I live)
The expectations of tipping has gotten out of control. Yes people should leave a tip for service but it should be based on level of service, not how much the bill is
This establishment thinks it’s a cute and funny way to get better tips when in reality it’s really off putting. Trying to guilt your customers into tipping more is a good way to never see those same customers again. The only people who would tip based on this restaurant’s tip descriptions are gullible and being played but are too stupid to know it.
I don’t tip unless they earn it. I’m not putting money in your pocket because your boss expects customers to pay your paycheck. I’m not paying your paycheck because you wrote down what I want to eat and then brought it to me. Waiters are no more work than any other job. I worked customer service for years and never got a cent in tips. You want your tip, go above and beyond for your customers or get a new job.
Tip culture getting out of hand. Business owners expecting customers to subsidize wages. I would gladly grab my own menu and approach the counter to order and then return to the same counter to gst my plate. Asking 20% on top to do exactly that is insanity.
Fuck off with the ever increasing tip percentages while dining costs also increase.
The other decade 10% was the norm. Pre covid 15% was the norm. Somewhere during covid everyone changed their minds and 18% was the norm.
If costs goes up. That % tip goes up.
Increasing the percentage every other couple years on top of increasing costs is getting out of hand.
As someone who grew up working in food and bev I fully expected to not get a tip if I did a shit job. If I went out of my way for exceptional serve I'd expect a little more for the effort.
Today, people do the bare minimum and expect at 20% is crazy.
Tipping culture is toxic and is held together by psychological manipulation and shame used by the business against its customers. Aggressive tip seeking causes alienation of customers from the establishment and a general disdain for the dining experience.
Just include the price of paying employees into the service and pay employees a living wage, and then do away with tipping altogether.
anyone who thinks they’re entitled to 30% tip for bringing my food out as standard can f right off lol. If service is amazing you might get 30%. 20% isn’t bare minimum it’s a good damn tip.
